Hi all

Got a 51 plate 1.6 focus. The clutch is slipping (slow to pull away and high revs). How easy is it to change yourself and do u need to change the CSC or can I get away with not changing it.

the 1.6 is not a bad engine to do the clutch on from what i have been told. I was just about to do mine but then i traded the car in. there is also quite good access.

you should replace the CSC, any problems with it later and you are going to be ripping the box out again.

the clutch is covered in the haynes manual so it might be worth looking on ebay for a second hand one to give you some pointers

your also going to need to remove the driveshafts if you remove the box completely, so it might be a good time to replace the driveshaft oil seals, they should only be a few quid each from ford - or atleast they were when i bought them for a mk2 focus

I doubt there will be any online guides for replacing the clutch on a focus tbh.

If its your first time doing a clutch, i would allow yourself all day and maybe a bit more.

I've always been told a clutch replacement is a big job. When I had mine done on my old fiesta the garage said it took them 4-5hours.
as it involves taking the front wheel drive shaft off and parts of the engine to bits etc it isn't a small job.

Look into replacing all the other parts of the clutch as well, most come in kits.

A clutch replacement from a garage costs around £150-200.

It is a big job and 4-5 hours would be about right. a garage doing it for £150-£200 is a steal considering the cost of clutch parts.

I believe that certain clutch specialists can do it on the roadside in a couple of hours.

There are alot of parts to remove, battery/tray. driveshafts (although they dont need to be fully removed), mounts etc. it can be done without removing the gearbox, you only need to slide it back enough to get access.
