Cambelt Cost

Is £232 a good price for a cambelt change on a 04 1.8 focus ?

I had it looked at and they said its worn but not due to next year so I thought I better get it done whilst its with them fixing a coolant leak.

Cars done 50k and us a 2004. The garage said its every 10 year's or 100 k. Milleage a year wise I gave time but they have inspected it and say it due next year oddly but its up to me. He said its worn. I thought I'd play it safe being a cambelt.

I trust this garage have used them nearly 10 years so they are not trying to drum up business. Sid cross my suspicious mind.

He said I'm welcome to see the cambelt condition before we do anything but I said go ahead.

Is he just changing the belt, or fitting new tensioner and pulleys etc ??? As the price would suggest the latter. If it is just for the belt I'd say its a bit on the expensive side !

Just the belt and tensioner. Does the idler need cha.gung aswell ?

i had mine done at a dealer for that price and it was a full timing belt kit. belt, pulley ,and tensioners as well as new cam bolts and i had the fan belt done at the same time for that price ide ask if they fitted a kit or just the belt and tensioner as it should have been a kit at that price.

He's doing the belt idler and tensioner.

The kit comes with the tension but the idler is an extra 36 + vat on the bill

So total is £275.20 total for the cambelt, tensioner, idler and fitting of supplied drive belt.

Is it a fair price ?

Just called them to get exact price as it was a rough quote they gave me.

I thought I'd call my local main dealer same job with all the above is £352 inc vat. Maybe the difference here is location and varying labour costs.

I think the price is good enough and I trust them to do it right being a ford specialist.

Can't wait to get my car back, been gratefully given a fiesta from 1993. It's oreible *french accent* better than the bus.

My work colleague had his cam belt on his Citroen Picasso changed by a small time local garage. After eleven months the belt snapped and wrecked the engine. He contacted the garage and they towed it in. The garage contacted the belt supplier and they told the garage to completely rebuild the engine at the belt manufacturers cost and supply my friend with a car at the same time. My 2012 Ford Ka has a 'non interference' engine which means if the belt breaks no engine damage will occur just fit a new belt and off you go. Your belt may seem a costly item but its an essential item and you must change it at the specified intervals.

That price sounds fair. And with regards to the cambelt snapping and the garage towing in & belt company paying for engine - that is rare but restores faith in an industry that is often hammered rightly or wrongly.

sometimes price depends on the area you live in.

I'd say phone up around 5 garages in your area and ask them all for prices and what they'd replace for you with the price they suggest. you could always ask the garage you prefer if they'd price match.

The focus has been done. Oddly they stuck by the quoted price and only billed me £250 for the cambelt, tensioner and idler and fitting the supplied aux belt. I'm very happy about the price and work.

They put the cambelt, tensioner and idler in a box for me in the boot for some reason, looked worn from what a new one looks like.

He said the ford belts are rarely the problem it the tensioner if that goes its the same.

I'm glad its all done tbh.

Now on to enjoying driving it :)

Recently changed my timing belt, tensioner and water pump (no idler pulley on mine).

Quoted price from Ford Rapid Fit (Ford belt & tensioner....other make water pump) £280 fitted. Good price I think considering the belt/tensioner are guaranteed for another 10 years lol.

In the end changed everything myself.........Conti timing belt & tensioner about £55 from ECP and Circoli water pump £27 also from ECP.

Soulman I reckon its good of the garage to leave all the old kit for your viewing....shows they done the job.

My ford dealer wouldnt even give me a quote...... Wanted to see the car, to see what other work may need doing... Told them again & again just want a quote for cambelt change. Was going to do myself till i read the haynee book. Anyone any ideas on a resonable cost for a 1.8tdci belt kit change?
