HI,

Has anyone had their version of this focus remapped? If so how much difference does it make?

Secondly, I'm having trouble finding remappers in Southampton or nearby. All the well known ones are up north and I was wondering if someone could recommend a company too me that is trust worthy.

Is it worth having it rolling road tested too?

My mate does custom remaps so I'm looking into getting mine done soon, mine is the same engine as yours and he reckons approx 35-38 BHP gain, and around 50 newton meters of torque,,,, not bad going that, and 10-20% better on fuel too. So something I'm really interested in ;-)

i'm interested to hear your results as i have a 1.8tdci too!

My 1.8 tdci went from 115 to 148 with a Bluefin - verified on a DOT rolling road test.

My 1.8 tdci went from 115 to 148 with a Bluefin - verified on a DOT rolling road test.

So roughly the same figures I've been quoted.... I had a passat remapped a few years back and found the difference astounding,,, what was your reaction to your remap ? Is it ( as I think it will be ) very noticable, and have you actually seen a better return in fuel economy, once you got over the initial WOW factor lol.

No noticable change to economy, still pretty much standard.

Much better acceleration and massively reduced turbo lag in low revs.

It goes uphill in 4th like a train and overtakes smoothly.

I personally think it runs better than my work car (2.5 estate) which was tuned by a police vehicle specialist due to usage as a response vehicle - then again the work one is much heavier due to fitted kit and a double dog carrier in the back.

Did your car (before remap) have a flat spot sometimes when pulling out from junctions, kinda like, you pull out then car seemed to dip, then go again ??? Mine does this sometimes, making me have to give it a few extra revs to make sure I make it out in one piece lol. Also noticed a slight flat spot around 2k revs, although I'm not sure if this is where the turbo kicks in. Either way, if this is normal I'm hoping the remap will iron out these issues.

You do find that you need to give the revs a bit of a poke to pull away at times.

The lag at 2k is standard beforr the turbo kicks in.

My remap reduced that greatly.

This may be a stupid question, but why don't the manufactures have the engine mapped for the improvements re-mapping achieves, or in other words what are the downsides to re-mapping.

Something to do with emissions, and EU legislation blah blah, its all babble really. There aren't really any drawbacks to a standard remap, its if you start going futher, then you need to start looking at strenghtening enging internals etc, but a standard car is easliy able to cope with the extra gains from a remap.

Engine maps are set to account for varying fuel quality within the wider European area.

A decent mapper should see 145bhp from the 1.8, the limiting factor is the head design, it cant flow enough air for much more, the engine design hasnt really changed since its original 55bhp, non turbo application!!

I had the 1.8, and RS Tuning in leeds had a great map for it, my mate had a bluefin, and the DynoDynamics rolling road read his car at 118bhp as standard and 129 with bluefin... its worth getting it RR'd before and after, as all RR's are different, and a lot of remap/tuning box manufacturers will quote the figures they get without RR'ing beforehand. Bluefin is one that does to be fair, i think their standard 1.8 hit 119bhp standard and 139bhp remapped... so its more important to look at the increase than the final figure which is 20bhp, so realiticly expect 135 bhp... See the link below for their RR Graph.

Custom remaps, In My Opinion may I add, are better than generic ones, as the car is tweaked on the rolling road, and made sure it runs right.

I've been out in an RS Tuned 145bhp Focus, and My God!!! was it quick. you surprise many a car with it... however, now to the downside...

Many people i have spoken to, and it also happened to me, Have had the High Pressure Fuel Pumps break up, and destroy the fuel system... Goodbye £2-3000... Not heard of it happening that often on untuned ones.

i was getting really excited until you mentioned the downside, cheers Dave!

hey i did 130,000 miles on a tuning box... and to be fair i blame that more than anything...

A proper remap takes fuel pressure readings into account, and the ECU will still react to issues... A Tuning box confuses the ECU into thinking pressures are low, so it ramps up pressure, thinking everything is ok...

Also dont forget, you only ever hear bad things, noone ever just pops up on the internet and says "Hello, My car is all fine, no issues" people only really use the internet when there are problems, or to find out info, never to praise...

I loved the extra shove mine had on a box, and that was only an extra 11 BHP and 30lbft... but it made a hell of a difference, once my car is out of warranty period, its getting mapped... but properly this time, on a rolling road...

I am to be honest totally clueless about remapping, would love to do it to mine but am scared to be honest that it damages the engine eventually, or am I wrong? I for one want my car to run well without to many problems for many years to come.

Please fellas enlighten me :)

your unlikely to run into many issues with just a remap, and on the 1.8 thats about all you can do... for reasons explained earlier...

if you do decide to do it, go to a reputable tuner/company thats had a lot of good reviews from people who drive the same or similar car to you..

As i said, RS Tuning in leeds get my vote, yes i know its a 4 hour drive from me... but he done a lot of TDCi's and VAGS etc etc, and really knows his stuff, plus, hes also a proper perfectionist, a car wont leave that workshop until he is 110% happy with it!

in fact IIRC the map on the new renault megane sport is one of his... ;) so if Manufacturers are going there, says something!!

hey just read this thread so soz if its a bump, i have 2007 1.8 tdci with a pipercross filter on it and a remap from celtic tuning (they come to you, and it was only 300 quid) they claimed 150 bhp but i would say its more around the 135 - 140 range havnt had it on the rolling road but ive had it timed. and its doing 0-62 in 9.1 secs, i cant exactly remember the in gear figures but on the whole it was just slightly quicker than the 2.0 apart from top end seems to die of at about 121 122 :P, maybe thats the gearing tho. also ive had the remap since the car had done 20 k its now covered 90 and its still running sweet the only thing that ive had to replace on mine is a turbo hose. other little things have gone aswell but nothing to do with the remap, i.e the bonnet sensor and the power steering sensor.

i'd definatley recomend it tho and its very noticible, the flat spots vanish and you can just rev it all the way up to 4750 in every gear and it seems to pull like a train with no drop off.

If you are using the spedo to check the 0 to 62 time, note that the spedo will be reading fast and at 62 the true speed will be about 57 MPH. You may need to check again and time it when it reaches 67 MPH on the spedo.

mine does this too and at times the engine has cut out which is very embarrasing. i have to keep the revs high when pulling away and sometimes i get heavy footed and shoot off leaving people thinking i'm a boy racer (which i am!)

hehe yeah i noticed that we actually did it using an iPhone app and a satnav (most scientific setup i could get :D ) but yeah for 120 on the speedo its more like 135.

btw mine is the zetec 3 door with 17 inch 5 spoke ford alloys not sure if that makes much difference but its probably a bit lighter than 5 door ?

in reply to Leemaxd:

i had some similair questions before i had the remap done the guy from celtic tuning told me all remaps are tested in real world and on rolling road to ensure everything is compatible and things like quality of fuel if used in europe or america varies alot so the standard map is made to be atleast 20 % under the tollerences of what the engine should actually be running at.

but from personal point of view ive done 70 thousand miles on a remapped car and havn't had any problem with it.

so id say go for it mate! definatley puts a smile on your face , its like having a new car for <£300
