Hiya Galaxy into lcoal dealers as clunking noise coming from n/s/r tyre, was advised calipers had worn, needed new brake pads and drop links all in all about £500, since been told they diagnosed this without taking the wheel off!! Am I being stupid or should they have taken the wheel off, surely you can't tell worn brake calipers without looking properly!!

Get a second opinion. I would try an independent repairers, preferably a family run business.
