Focus 1.6 Zetec 16V

Just sold my punto and bought a Focus 1.6 zetec 16v 1999, never had one of these before, so excuse all my questions.

When I start the car, it revs it self and settles down but revs are high, I have bought a new air filter, and carb cleaner, i am wanting to take sensors and air control valve and bits off to clean them, is this a good move?

There is a whining noise coming from engine bay on tick over,

I am going to have cam belt changed, as i dont know when it was last done, also going to change plugs today and leads.

Is there anything else I should do.

Redex etc etc in fuel to give injectors a clean,

any advice will be greatfully received and acted on.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry one more, for the central locking to work from remote, i have to be standing right next to the car, and hold remote next to window, i have put new battery in remote, is there a aerial, i can extend for it to get better signal from remote

The revving sounds like the idle control valve. Get that sucker off and soak it in some petrol! (Notorious problem on the Escort, same engine in your focus as the escort probably too!)

Sounds like you are taking the right approach. The whining noise could be the cambelt tensioner so make sure they change that asd part of the cambelt kit rather than just a belt on its own.

If its still there after its changed it could be the Aux belt tensioner or the Water pump.

I took of idle control valve and sprayed it inside with carb cleaner loads of black c&ap came out of it, but its still doing the same thing, revs high when started.

Also it sounds like chock is staying on for very long time.

how high are the revs? 1200 give or take when cold?

the whining noise could also be a belt which has been fitted too tight

when its started, it revs to 2500, when its on tick over 1500.

I have got the idle control valve soaking in petrol now in shed.

I think the whining noise is coming from alternator, so i will change that tomorrow.

I am getting my new full exhaust system today, but on the new one there are 2 holes for lamba sensors, but my car only has 1 lamba sensor the one just after manifold, it does not seem to have wiring for one after cat or hole for one.

there are a few front pipes for the focus, you can plug the hole you dont need though

Have you been near the throttle body at all? check to see if its clean and closing properly.

When car was it garage yesterday, the mechanic said to me, it looks like its had the throttle body changed, the idle control valve is clean, so am thinking what you suggest to try next, take throttle housing off and clean it, the garage did say, he may have to plug computer into car, and realign / or reset throttle body.

Thanks for all advice so far.

take it to fords it may simply need the pcm updated as the values may be wrong theres no point replacing stuff when you have no idea what the cause is it could be an intake leak
