Heated Front Windscreen - Half Not Working!

Hi all,

I've got a 2006 Focus Ghia 1.6 and having some issues with the heated front windscreen.

Half of the screen seems to work (passenger side), whilst the other half doesn't work at all. I'm assuming that the mechanism is split into two circuits at some point and that the side controlling the drivers side is faulty/disconnected/fuse issue somewhere.

Just wondering if anybody knows where to look and how to test for problems?

This is a common fault with the Focus.

There is a copper ribbon under the scuttle panel that gets caught by the wiper motor link and gets damaged.

If you search the forum you will find previous threads concerning the cause and solution.

It might also be worth checking the connector under the scuttle.

When my mondeo screen stopped working on one side, I traced it back to a bad connection. Cleaned and tightened the pins, it's been fine since

I've also had the same problems on a Granada and a Mondeo, it's always the drivers side that packs up, it,s about time Ford sorted this one.

i had a look under mine and the copper wire is at the front on top of the metal not hanging under like the ones ive seen the wiper goes nowhere near so im not sure its been a ford issue.

It must be some sort of design fault given the frequency of the fault... seems to be everywhere! Might not be the wiper thing, but might just be the use of cheap/poor quality wiring.

I agree, it happened on both of my last 2 Fords, drivers side packing up, fingers crossed for this Focus.

the wiring sits right on top of the area where the rain runs down to the drain under the scuttle panel and gets a lot of muck on it the wiring looks like copper so should last.

had a look at mine just last week and alls fine where they are situated. it could be either when screens are replaced these ribbons are not sited correctly which is where the wiper gets it or some arent done at the factory.

2focus and no issue with either in laws c max no issues and both neighbours foci no issues all 2005 to 2007

That sounds reassuring. :)

Opened it up and had a look at mine today. The ribbon was completely detached from the wire - that's the problem. Not sure how it happened though, hard to see how it had been routed since they were just completely detached.

Soldered them together and are hoping for some good conditions to test it soon... although knowing my luck it'll probably be lovely and sunny with no steamy windows for a good while.

Fuse?

Each side is fused seperately I believe.

Is it possible for one side of a relay to go down ?

I'd of thought it would have two relays not just one I'm sure the like of the Galaxy has i now my Range Rover has so should imagine these have if its split to different circuits .
