Whining Noise

Hi,

About a year ago I noticed a whining noise and thought nothing of it untill now where the noise has increased a bit.

I want to know what it is, the symtoms are:

-When I push the clutch in, the noise goes away

-When the clutch is pushed in, going down a hill keeping the same speed the noise is still gone untill the clutch is back up

-In neutral and rev'ing the car the noise isnt there

-Changes in tone at about 50mph

-Noise is the same in any gear

-just after starting, somtimes I hear a slight spin up sound just after starting, but it's not that loud.

Any ideas? It's bugging me a little

sounds like the clutch release bearing

If its on an ST170 it could be the Dual Mass flywheel on its way out

yeah mate id say release bearing or flywheel , id say flywheel more likely tho as release bearing will probably be more of a cluncking.

outside chance it could be a bearing in the gearbox too.

jack it up and get the old stethoscope out :D

it cant be the release bearing, that was changed in a clutch kit a while ago

my money will be on the flywheel

I dont see how it would be mate, it's not a DMF

one other symptom is that its not REALLY loud, just there and annoying cos it's getting worse

I would put money on it being the release bearing

having had it on my mk1 release bearing either the new ones popped a seal like mine did or the hydraulics need bled

it cant be, I had the noise appear before the clutch was done, and after the noise is still there 6 months later after the clutch was done. And a clutch kit was fitted

john mate if its coming from the clutch its the bearing wether it was changed or not i had a kit fitted and within 1 week the new slave cylinder seal popped and leaked it was a faulty part i had it redone under the ford dealers warranty as it was a faulty part whole kit had to be redone again either that or the garage didnt do the job they claimed to do and didnt fit a new slave cylinder you dont have a dmf so its the only option im afraid as you said before youve had issues since the clutch was first done

well only thing i could say mate if somebody brought one in and described those problems id check : clutch and release bearing + fly wheel , and then id probably run it thro a few gears with stethoscope on gearbox, and go from there. apart from that it would be trial and error :)

Mates, I dont think its to do with the clutch. The noise was there before and after the clutch change so it cant be the clutch at all.

Anymore ideas?

Its in the centre of the flywheel, usually quite small

Guys, I think that you think this whining noise is VERY LOUD and cant hear anything else; it isnt it's a small whining noise

Eh, any bearing can produce a small noise... Nobody has suggested that it's loud

Is the noise apparent throughout a certain rev range of all the revs?

E.g. Only noticeable between 1500 and 2000 revs or is it the entire rev range?

A year sgo when I first noticed the noise it only happened at exactly 40mph and 2,000rpm.

Now it seems apparent in all gears and all speeds but a different tone

I still reckon lay shaft bearing.

Thanks, is it an expensive fix? What happens if I leave it alone

Remember it's only my suggestion of the problem but it's not a cheap job and a knackered lay shaft bearing can result in a scragged gearbox.
