Insurance For Young Drivers...

28 posts in this topic

Hi

Im 21, with 2yrs* NCD and 3yrs experience and its that time of yearr when i need to renew my insurance. Iv got 3 quotes so far -

£1100 from the Co-Op, iv been with them since i bought my first car

£916 from Admiral and unbelievably -

£430 from Direct Line,

Does the Direct Line quote seem too good to be true? I think i'll phone them tomorrow and see what the script is....

*the 2yrs NCD over the 3 years is due to a technical error with my mum cancelling the insurcance on my old car [in which i was a named driver, because it was her car to begin with] resulting in me loosing a years NCD.

What does everyon else about the same age pay for their insurance and from what company?

I have been with direct line for 2 years - not consecutively, haven't dealt with them with regards to a claim or problem so i cant comment on that. this year i have insured 2 cars cheaper than 1 with admiral.

my car with 3 years NCB and one accident behind me in the Cee'd (about £30 different to insure than the Focus) and I just paid for a ten month policy £707...

Its not a bad price, but it sounds like they have an ace up their sleeve...

Mine ended up at around £1700 fully comp after adding on all the extras and breakdown cover etc with admiral, direct line wouldn't even quote me.

How'd you manage that one mate? Mine was originally 1100 but after every extra going and breakdown cover etc it ended up at 1700. Probably cause it's technically my 1st car, cause I used to get company cars in previous jobs so I had a different car every week and never needed my own, so I have no ncb.

No idea mate... that's just what it is.

I put my annual estimated mileage down as 8,000 miles. I got the car in early March and it's now July - that's 5 months and I've done 4,000 miles, so I might go over it a tad, but it's just an estimate anyway.

I keep it overnight in a residential parking area, so that probably saves a few quid.

Voluntary excess of £250.

And my girlfriend is on it as a named driver which, at the time, brought it down a fair bit, but it might not do so next year once the new EU laws come into force. But I renew in December and the laws don't come into force until then, so hopefully I can get in just before it!

Only one years no claims bonus, so not a huge amount.

I can't remember what options I took - not many. I didn't take the breakdown as I have that through my bank, I know that a least. And knowing me as a penny pinching so and so, I probably never took many of the others either! Maybe personal injury and/or hire car.

1.25L Fiesta Zetec - 19 years old, 1 years NCB, 2 years driving experience. £1400.00 eCar - should get 2 years NCB in 5 months.

Thats with changing my car in the middle of my policy, they just added it from £120.00 a month in a Ford KA MK2 Zetec to £160.00 in a Fiesta, I pay monthley so its more than £1400.00 but hopefully should knock a few hundred quid off when I'm 20 and 2 years NCB.

:-)

I'd definitely be cautious with Direct Line, I used to work for them on the claims side and they look for any excuse to not pay out also you're not guaranteed a curtesy car either even if you use their recommended repairers its down to the garage to provide one if they want to. Plus if it's an older car any sort of accident will more than likely result in either cat c or d total loss and their engineers will try and deduct anything they can off the value.

Currently an independent investigation into Insurers on a whole into the price they are offering for total losses as everyone knows they will only pay market valuation and not the cost for to replace for like for like, the FOS are taking this into account too in their decisions so never settle for the value they give.

I'm now 22 I'm paying £1900 for 1.25 mk 4 fiesta rip off central.

Hi.. when your 25 it does go down abit (im 26).. 2yrs ago i had a 1.8 ford mondeo and i was paying £600 a year, im picking up a '98 ford escort 1.6 in 2 weeks and my insurance company (elephant) want £800.. but i dont want to cancel the insurance iv already got coz only had it 7months and i really need to build a no claims.. iv been driving 9yrs but only 5yrs with a licence but i still have NO NO CLAIMS BONUS coz i get bored after 6months, so sell it an cancel insurance.. so £800 i guess aint bad but i dont see why its more expensive to insure a 1.6 escort than a 1.8 mondeo.. i always put both my parents on my insurance as named drivers which knocks a couple hundred quid off.. insurance companys will rip u off if they can get away with it..

I'm 19, with license for 18 months but no NCD (couldn't afford the insurance before this!) but some experience. Pass plus included, and no accidents, points or anything. I'm driving a 2006 Focus hatch Ghia 1.6TDCi. Just before I bought the car I was quoted £1800, but after I bought it and went to buy the policy, the cheapest I could find was £1900 for a black box, or £2200 from Tesco! That's with both of my parents on as named drivers. I went with Tescos.

Tried every single comparison site I could find, as well as several sites who weren't on them. Black box insurers, young driver insurers... I tried them all.

Even tried an insurer who specialises in 19yr olds, and was told I couldn't be covered because of my age...

Am 21 with 2 years ncd an mine is £3,000 on a 59 1.6 zetec focus no points never been in an accident its just a rip off

Some areas are a massive rip off. It all really comes down to where you live and your claims history.

But 3K though, damn, it's basically nothing money at the end of the day. Ok, if you have an accident you're covered and your legal to drive, but it's a bit like paying rent to a flat that you'll never own.

I'm surprised some young'uns can afford that kind of money on poxy insurance!
