GSM Posted July 17, 2012 Share Posted July 17, 2012 If there was a hole in the exhaust, then yes, it would have failed an MOT. But you'd be surprised how quickly a hole can develop. One particularly mean piece of road debris, and it's all downhill from there. Kwik-Fit do a free exhaust check. I wouldn't recommend using them to do the work, but might as well take advantage of the free check. Although I'd advise you to request to observe while the check is carried out just to be sure that they don't do any mucking about - breaking things that aren't broken in the hopes of you getting them to carry out the repair. But if the noise only happens sometimes, I'd suggest that it's not a hole, but maybe a compromised gasket that is creating a opening at high rpm. Or, as before, at the flex pipe. If it's near the front of the car it could be one of the problems as suggested by myself and Garrie. As far as I know, it is quite common to get a small exhaust leak at the manifold flex pipe.
