SCram
I recently bought an 18month old SMax 2.0 TDCI. It is great except of a couple of niggly noises that don’t have an obvious explanation. It has less than 14K miles on the clock. 1) Odd vibration noise when lift off the accelerator – when shifting up gears. Only noticeable when shift from 2nd to 3rd, 3rd and 4th and 4th to 5th. It is more noticeable when the engine is more stressed, for example, accelerating up a slope. The noise appears to be coming from behind my left shoulder, so it may be associated with the exhaust system. Local Ford dealer says most likely cause is Turbo overrun, and nothing to worry about. Is it? Any ideas? 2) Higher pitched whine – this is not immediately noticeable especially if playing the sound system loud. The noise is a little like the whistle from an out of tune AM radio station. This sound appears to be coming from the front centre of the car. My guess is it is coming from a pump. Local Ford dealer says its “normal”. I’ve not heard this noise in several other recent Ford 2.0 TDCI Mondeo’s, Galaxy’s or Smax’s. My concern is that this is an early warning of a potential failure of a critical item. Any ideas? I’d appreciate any advice on the cause of these noises and whether to regard these are worrying. Thanks Steve

Thanks Steve Hi Steve, apparently this forum has a great number of Steve's :D I drive a perol car, but being frequently on the forums, here is what I recall: 1. vibration sound - yes many smaxers have this if not all on both 1.8 and 2.0 diesel engines. It does effectively come from the turbo overboost and the only cure is to reprogram the turbo. Many do not go for this solution as turbo becomes more linear and for the fun of driving they prefer a little noise on deceleration. 2. High pitch winning, I recall some people were complaining about such noise and even did a drive test exchanging cars. The noise was louder on some cars and quiter on others and some did not have it at all. I believe general concensuns was that it comes from the power steering. I will have a look on my faivourite franco-belgian forum to refresh my memory and post back if it was not that. I believe both problems are not worrying, the more appropriate word is "annoying"
sobaka
Yes, for the whining noise it is a hydro-electric fuel pump. Some were cured by changing a pipe, try talking to your dealer, they should be able to find it on there database if you are really annoyed, if not let it go, nothing to worry about safety wise. Note that noise becomes louder when cold.
SCram
Ok - thanks for your response. I figure it is some kind of pump noise. It is annoying but I'll stick with it for a while to see how it changes over time and conditions. Thanks again Steve

When I lift up gas pedal strange noise fm over my left shoulder same as above spoke to ford gbp1 per minute technical not a clue support line and also fords wash my hands of any issue to do with a ford customer support line. Both including dealer have never heard of this before.so they say.the only comment ford could advise with certainty was that it was definitely not a warranty issue.surprise surprise. The dealer gates at epping only contribution was to suggest start stripping the car and turbo and exhaust etc at gbp 120 ph minimum 8 hrs work to advise what the issue is. Any one else had similar over the left shoulder noises when lifting the gas pedal when changing gear plse would be very helpful and much appreciated. None of them suggested fuel pump as an option however but possibly this is because this would be the cheaper option. thankyou in advance
