London S-MAX
Just checking prices and I can get the 2.2 cheaper than the 2.0 on drivethedeal with all same options. Anyone know why this might be? Is there any reason someone would prefer the 2.0 to the 2.2, seems a no brainer to me, but am I missing anything? Both are Titanium only difference is the engine? Hi, this can well happen, especially with such traders as drive the deal or dealdrivers. They are getting the best prices available at a given time and deliver the car to your dealer or to your doors. 2.2 is consuming a lot more, with diesel prices higher not many people want to pay just for the double exhaust :) . 2.2 is a more prefomant motor however 2.0 diesel is largly enouph for day to day commute, consumes less and still gives you a fun drive if you want. If you have no issues with consumption around 25-30 mpg go for 2.2 especially if it is cheaper. The only problem with 2.2 I am aware of was a hesitating engine at certain revvs, but that is fixed by engine programming long time ago. A good motor :D
London S-MAX
Thanks for the reply. On the mpg - where did your figures come from? or are you thinking of the 2.5 engine? The figures I see on Ford web site are S-Max 1.8 TDCi 125ps 45.5 MPG S-Max 2.0 TDCi 140ps 47.1 MPG (another website had this as 44.1) S-Max 2.0 TDCi Auto 38.7 MPG 2.2-litre TDCi 175ps 42.8mpg so not too much in it. 42.8mpg sounds ok. London S-MAX
found this on 2.0 engine Engine Note: The manual 2.0 TDCI 140ps 6spd engine: co2 and mpg values below relate to this engine if built after 1/9/08. The 2.0 TDCI engine built prior 1/9/08 had co2 emissions of 164 g/km and combined cycle mpg of 44.1. Fuel economy improved from 44.1 to 47.1, is estimated at an approx 2p per mile cost saving, or £1200 over a typical 3 year 60000 mile life of ownership. London S-MAX
There was a 'catch' on drivethedeal price - apparently even though I went through and entered what I wanted with all the options and it gave me a quote, this quote was not what I asked for but for cars in stock. Two problems with this - the stock cars are not configurable and surprise surprise none were available with what I wanted, secondly they were built a while back and so do not have all the latest features standard on same model but latest build (ed Sony DAB CD which is only on cars built after 1/9/2008). When I spoke to them they said it would be an additional £1500 for a non stock (really new) car. I checked out dealdrivers and their price is almost identical to drive the deal with the extra £1500, but the above put me off drive the deal as I feel it is dishonest way of selling, so if I go for it I will use deal drivers. Aiming to go for test drive this weekend at Ford dealers, will also ask them what their best offer is. Thanks.
sobaka
Aha, everything is clear then with the price. As for the cosumption, if your forum name really reflect the reality and you are going to drive in London, forget the figures from the ford site. I am communicating with many smaxers for about 2 years now and drive one myself. The real figures for TDCI are: - 2.0 ~40 mpg, if more town driving than motorway it is more close to 35 - 2.2 35-38 mpg and in town driving can go as low as 25 Prefer to tell you this now so it is not a bad surprise afterwards :) I know many people buying from dealdrivers in UK, did not yet hear any bad comment from about dealdrivers from anybody getting an smax. zozzer
our non DPF 2.0TDci manual SMAX can come in at 32 mpg in London traffic and riding the turbo to get away cleanly at the lights ;) the torque can surprise some if you are doing a lot of short trips (sub 10 miles) for school runs I'd seriously consider a petrol or a non-DPF second hand SMAX as there are issues with DPFs not just on Fords but all makes. anecdotally many salesman dont even know that the new diesel SMAXs have DPFs or that there are problems on short runs with them
