Steering problem

Featured Replies

I've got a 1977 Escort GTI. Recently the steering seems to have developed a mind of its own. I keep getting little wobbles as if the front wheels are following the bumps and dips in the road. Also, when I change gear I get a slight pull to the right. I know I will have to get this seen to, but does anyone have an idea what may be the cause?

first i would check all the rubber bushes on the suspension and antiroll bar for any signs of play.

Its most probably your lower arm bushes.

You can have these changed but i found it easier to change the whole arm. It is a bit of a sod but worth doing. I changed mine on monday as i had this problem too.

I think i may have the same problem.

How much would this cost to get done?

i also seem to have this problem, but my lower arms seem to be fairly new with no play

I had this problem with my escort 1.8si. I have just had my wishbones changed at that seems to have sorted it. hope this helps

Its only around £25-£35 per arm so well worth doing it.

Hi guys, has anyone got a guide to changing the bushes on an Escort GTi. My steering is pulling (I think both ways) quite violently, usually when i'm doing high speeds. I had the same problem about 18 months ago & the bushes sorted it but was done at a garage. I'm a novice so need something fairly stagihtforard to follow. Cheers, Chris.
