Fiesta Bad Fuel Consumption

A mix tesco then pb every 2-3 fill ups

It would be interesting to see what differences it makes if you stuck to the big branded stations for a few fill ups.

I've known supermarket fuel to ruin a fuel pump in a diesel and more than one mechanic I've spoken to has said stay well clear of the stuff, too much water and the car has to use more to produce the same "bang" in the engine, so it can be a false economy.

I only use Shell (it the only one for miles and I don't travel far for work), and as said previously, I will get 45mpg from a 2 mile journey, not even driving that economically.

Can soon find out I will just stick to the main brands and see what happens

I think some have already said they reset trip at every fill-up, but i have noticed that if you don't, then the car's trip computer is very slow to react to change, so if you want to get an accurate reading on a journey its best to reset before hand, if you haven't already done so recently

Put 25 squid in today from shell...only cos it was on way .usually tesco I was happy with my mpg better then astray sport hatch I had last.....re set mpg counter and it still says 46 ..47 mpg starting.g to wonder if its accurate reading rest of views on here ?????

I can tell you that measuring over 45,500 miles (101 fill up and measurements) my trip computer mpg is -3.28% accurate. My real average is 57.75, computer average is 55.9. (I reset my trip computer on every fill up and that 55.9 is the average of the 101 readings)

Correct - the longer you leave between resets means it is calculating the mpg using a greater amount of data. Therefore need a higher number of values either side of the average to affect the read out. E.g. if your average was 55 and you hadn't reset in a while you'd either need to floor it (getting 10mpg) for a bit for it to bring the overall average down.

The Fiesta seems to be affected more than most, maybe it has a larger log to calculate the average with?

But its definetly slower to react to change than previous cars with trip computers.

I have a 2007 1.4 petrol duratec and it's a lovely car but I drive 11 miles to work every day but it's dropping over 20 miles. It's doing roughly 120 miles on £25 of fuel. I honestly can't afford to run it anymore. ASM will have another car to the collection lol

You do realise that this thread was started August 2012 ? It has been dead for 9 years with the exception of one post 2 years ago.

Most if not all who posted here no longer have their Fiesta's.

I know this is an old thread but i get the same bad MPG 1.6 Ti-vct Titanium 2011.

I use Morrisons petrol and i fill it up until it clicks to say full then turns trip/MPG  back every time.

Very very local driving i get around 30 MPG and when i get to 100 miles which is around 2 weeks i put £20 in which don't click back off so i would say it's using £25.

I do love the drive of it and only 34k on the clock but the petrol is a killer.

There's something seriously wrong if it's genuinely doing 7-8mpg.  I'd suggest it's the reading that's incorrect...have you measured it correctly with the brim method?  Can you smell petrol leaking outside the car?  (It evaporates quickly, so you won't necessarily see puddles of it.)

Yes, only way to really establish mpg accurately over a reasonable period. I'm amazed at the number of posts that quote mpg on the basis of "miles per 20 quids worth" or whatever. Trip computers are rarely reliable (but not usually that far out - more 10-15% in my experience).

That said, if it's really 7-8 mpg and poor running has not been mentioned, sounds like a serious leak somehere, as you say.

(I once had ludicrously bad mpg in a Morris Marina and it turned out, after dropping the fuel tank, that it had a big rust hole in the top and petrol was slopping out every time I went round a corner! But no visible signs due to rapid evaporation.)

Can't understand how some folk are getting such low mileage.   I'm on my fifth Fiesta and not one has done less than 40mpg.   My current one is a Titanium X automatic and, going by the brim to brim method is giving me 50 mpg both town and country.   I think the calculations must be wrong.
