Flashing Glow Plug Light

Recently my 04 mondeo tdci has been runing a bit rough. When cold and stationary it sems to chug, or act as though it's running on less cylinders if you understand. Any aceleration or as driving it's fine.

The oher day on the motorway i hd to drop down to fith due some idiot!! and one aceleration i suddenly noticed power loss and the glow plug light started flashing. I continued to work and on switching the engine off and back on the flashing had stopped!! Ok I thought.

On the way home last night, while pulling onto the motorway I accelerated more than usual on entry and again, power loss and glow plug light started flashing.

As with everyone else, i have read nuerous posts and they are all somewhat conering. Yes, since buying the car 10 months ago there seems to be more smoke (more white that anything) but only on start up when cold.

A mate of mine plugged it in to his code reader the other week, nothing..no codes. I'm slightly concerned now!! Oh, did an oil change the other week too, oil filter, air filter etc and changed the boost hose as this was err, screwed

Any advice etc would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Sounds like injectors on way out. White / grey smoke is prob unburnt diesel. This is normally bad when engine is cold. As time goes on you will find it hard to start in mornings

Usually black is unburnt fuel, grey is oil and white is water vapour from a coolant leak.

If its the injectors, could it be one or all that need replacing. Also would this explain why when driving, if I ease off the throttle and back on again it almost hickups or stutters, only slightly. And I guess it explains the rough idle!!

Stoney had all 4 injectors done on mine. Unburnt / poorly burnt diesel hitting the hot exhaust comes out white/grey trust me.

I had two injectors done followed by the other two about six weeks later. Spent many cold mornings holding my foot on the excelerator trying to get the engine warmed up enough to stay running, whilst choking on the clouds of smoke.

So, I guess the next question is where can I get injectors that aren't gonna rip my arm off with cost??

Ok, if I have the injectors done...is it likely that something else major might go? Does the cost suggest its better to bin the car??

i would not go straight for the injectors as it could be many things on the fuel side, there should be a code stored but if your car is pre 2004 you need a compatable code reader, try the simple stuff first like removing and cleaning the egr valve, did you change the fuel filter? have a leak off test done on the injectors also check that the injectors have not lost their coding.

Hi, Pagdin, I also have a rough idle for ages and at last MOT I had a failure on emissions due to smoke. We cleared the smoke by a good thrashing in second I cleaned the EGR valve and its had oil fuel filters etc. More worryingly it has started the flashing coil light and loss of power thing whilst on full throttle but no codes as I have always stopped and restarted resetting the coil light. We last night I drove about 5 miles with the coil light flashing and now I have the engine management light on which hopefully means I can get the codes off it tonight. I'll post what it comes up with but I suspect the injectors at 107k miles I cant complain.

Has anyone got a good source of cheap injectors that are reliable?

My light only starts, flashing when I hit around 3k rpm in 4th or above!!

Interesting about the fuel filter..I didn't change mine on service as looked ok. I've done 17k in ten months, how often do they need changing. Also, what if I ran the tank lower than usual, perhaps the filter is buggered but how would this effect the running and cause the smoke etc??

Hi Pagdin

far as i can make out filter should be changed about every 35k miles.

i only posted as i thought this info may help.

the last time i had a problem like this was blocked cat.( but that was on a petrol car)

Thanks all. Problem now is engine management light has now come on!! Guesing only so many times the glowplug light coms ontill this will happen.

Question, will continued running of the car mean it will give up..die!?!?

Hi guys, Tom I could not see the attachments sorry.

My wife had taken the car to a garage on the Monday and they wiped the codes before I could see them and said it was the ecu to blame and it needs recoding.

Anyway the next day it got worse and cut out on the main road and would not start for ages. After to got home I checked it and the codes were p1211 injector control pressure higher / lower than desired

P0251 injector pump fuel metering control A

Once I clear them the light goes out but the p1211, stays stored.

The Monday garage said the fraud dealers can fix it by reloading the ecu software and recoding but I am not sure how to ask the dealer to without getting them to do everything and I am sure they will want to change pumps injectors and all else!

Any ideas???

the codes point towards injector trouble, get a leak off test done.

Fuel rail pressure sensor could be duff,

Sad thing is, although they look to be easy to replace, apparently this is not recommended and a whole fuel rail would be required.

Thanks Guys, I am tempted to do the DIY route which is my normal style but as everyone seams to have bad experiences so I think I am off to my local MOT guy as I found out he is ex Ford and might have a good name for this.

Wish me luck

Oh great I knew Id find a topic on this here. Mine is doing the same apart from its idling normally, all I do get is loss of power when the glow plug light flashes. Im really hoping it doesnt end up being injectors

Had mine plugged in today, turns out it is the EGR valve. Im going to attempt to remove it and clean it myself before spending any ridiculous amounts of money on a new one. I did get a price from the guy who plugged it for me, think he rang Ford because the part alone came out at just over £215. I have just looked on eBay and the first one I came across was £119 so I have a lot of shopping around to do before commiting. If I can get the old one off and back on again after cleaning, then surely I can fit a new one too?? #Novice

Unless I remove it, put it back together and end up with one bolt left over..............scratchy head time :D
