Needed: Guide To Wiring Up Additional 12V Sockets

Hi All,

So as the title states i need some guidance on how to wire up addional 12v sockets to my MK1 Ford Focus. I was wanting to put 1 in the back for the kids DVD player and 1 in the boot.

Whats the best way of doing this?

You would need some 30 Amp wire and link and wire in parallel from your front 12v Aux socket adding in a fuse.

All you need then is tools and hands, snip off the ring terminals and splice in to the front 12v socket and feed to the desired location in the rear of the car.

Is this a tricky job to do? I could do with getting an extra socket which runs off of the ingition for my dash cam. I need it so that when the ignition is turned off, the power to the socket goes off. I have a mk2.5

Thats easy mate,

Purchase a piggy back fuse adaptor and fit it to filter power from an ignition positive such as the heater control fuse,

Then connect your 12v scoket to the fused piggy back adaptor.

Yes thats correct mate,

The piggy backs have two fuse sockets built in to them, the lower fuse is for the original fuse and the upper socket for the new take off positive.

Ah that is very clever. What colour and rating fuse would I need for the cigarette lighter, I think it was yellow? 15 rings a bell.

Would I have to get the cigarette lighter and a nevative wire and find somewhere on the car to connect it?

I am alittle cautious as years ago I had one of the first focuses and I almost wrecked the wiring loom by making some 'ajustments'.

Don't want a repeat of that.

My problem last time with electrics was to do with the head unit, I ran some new wires from it. Using those blue clips you get, they attach to an existing wire and allow you to add a wire to the existing wire without cutting anything. Didn't get a few of them on right and ended up causing all sorts of problems with my Speakers. Some would not work, some would come on and off when I went over bumps, I vowed never to touch the wiring looms on a focus again!
