Mk7 Titanium Fiesta-Poor Fuel Economy Ideas?

Hi Guys,

New to the forum, recently bought a MK7 Titanium 1.6 TDCI fiesta and the fuel economy is very poor.

Trip is indicating 32mpg and 260-300 to a tank driving like a saint.

Exhaust is very black which would back up that the car is over-fuelling.

No management light on or any issues showing through IDS V.70.

Appreciate any ideas as at a brick wall!

Cheers Justin.

Could be a number of things (most would throw an error code) but I'd start with the MAF sensor, might be causing the engine to run too rich. It's on the hose coming out of the airbox. Remove the multiplug and screws, pull the sensor out carefully and give it a clean with some carb cleaner or similar, taking care not to break the wires (there are two with a resistor between). When I cleaned the one on my Mondeo (just because I could. Nothing actually wrong!) I used a cotton bud and sprayed carb cleaner onto that, then cleaned the MAF sensor that way.

Possibly need to clean the pipes out? Castrol GTX, Shell V power for a few fill ups and a heavy right foot - rev the S**t out of it?

Tyre pressures are always a good one for fuel economy

I have a 1.6 TDCI Titty and it averages 55-60 (brim to brim measure, trip computer over reads by a couple of mpg) These are mainly long distance runs for work though. Lots of cold start shorter runs across town would see the figure drop but think, if genuine, 32mpg indicates a problem.

I should add I get 32 out of my 1.6 petrol

I was getting low 40's in my diesel, so I got in some BP Ultimate and gave it some, back up to 60's now :P got 69 to the gallon last night (or if you believe the computer, 99.9 to the gallon, if only).

You don't say under what conditions you are driving the vehicle. If you drive mainly short distance urban areas you will have poor fuel economy, you should have bought a petrol car.

Diesel engines get best performance over distance and constant engine speed.
