Maybe the FL Focus handles this differently, I just tested this on 2007 Fiesta (Mk 6.5) too and it's working on it as well.

Try it once more and you'll see. Didn't you by any chance mess up some of the wiring from ACC and battery and so on? This could maybe result in something like this...although it would be best then, to see it, try to take a picture, if you did something with the wiring, other than plugging in standard cable for the stereo...

Tried it today, no luck I'm afraid. I can live with that though.

An issue I am having is with the GPS receiver - sometimes (intermittently), it can fail to get a position lock, which can be very annoying. However, if I move around the receiver randomly a bit (it's currently sitting on the dash, next to the nearside demister vent/a-pillar), it seems to help.

Anyone have any suggestions?

It's weird that it's not working this way...I would try to contact the seller if this is a standard behaviour or not, just to be sure that everything is all right with the stereo though...

As for the GPS issue, definitely try to mount the receiver somewhere, where it's not blocked by anything, i.e. if you have heated front window, it sorta creates a cage for the GPS signal, so move the receiver out of the car and you'll see then. No need to remove any pillars or anything yet, simply just roll down the window and run the wire out of it and mount the receiver on the car from outside. It should be magnetic on the bottom, so it should hold well.

If your signal is fine, then I would suggest to mount the receiver either inside the A-pillar, or under the roof - I think 2-3 pages back in this thread is a picture in one of my posts where it's shown where I mounted mine...and I'm having no problems since then ;)

I have only just got around to taking out head unit to splice wires as you suggested for button illumination.

Did this today and all now working ok.Thanks

Still no joy with broadband dongle though, its a Huawei E3231 PAYG with 1 month of data on.

What did you put in for the APN address , I have 3GNET *99# No user name and no password.

Its not the end of the world if I cant get it on, its just annoying when you know its capable.

Thanks again for your help, much appreciated.

Glad to hear that the illumination is working...it's shame that they can't do this out-of-the box with the CAN-BUS controller...they should've just by-passed it completely and hardwired the cable to the main connector then! But, I know, I know, it's Chinese so...

With the 3G I really don't know what settings does your provider use, here in Slovakia, I'm on T-Mobile and I have Huawei E1750 modem and in the settings I have the same number, but for APN I have "internet". And that's working setup for me. But each provider can use different APN, so I guess this is something you should find on your provider's website, just look for something like "manual APN/internet setup" or "internet setup for older/legacy devices" and you should be able to find something relevant...or just blindly try to put in "internet" for APN and leave the phone number and username/pass as it is...if the stereo detected your modem it should work and it's really only issue with APN settings.

Thanks for your help mate.

Apparently the ignition issue is "by design", according to the Chinese seller.

I do have the front heated windscreen - perhaps that is the cause of the signal issue? I hope so. I think mounting the GPS antenna outside of the car is a bit too much lol, but I might try mounting it under the roof, above the courtesy light as you suggested. I'll try to find the old posts then, thanks for the advice.

My Chinese unit works in position 1, its a little annoying that she wont work like the stock head unit and work whenever and automatically turn off, but position 1 is fine with me for most things.

Here is a quick list of the positives and negatives, for anyone who is interested.

For reference, a link to the exact unit that I bought: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321756267757

Positives:

* Steering wheel controls work perfectly out of the box, the button back-lighting and screen brightness work well in hand with the cars parking lights/headlights

* Surprisingly good sound quality, much better than the stock Ford 6000CD it replaced. 320kbps MP3's sound pretty good.

* Hardly any system lag switching between menu's & apps - quite snappy indeed. Apparently the dual core 1.6Ghz processor inside it outperforms my android phone in benchmarks.

* The screen is of decent quality - it is sharp, brightness is good, and it is capacitive, so it's fairly responsive.

* Tonnes of room for customization - wallpapers, live wallpapers, apps (Spotify, YouTube, Google Maps). It is android 4.4.4 after all.

Negatives:

* The instruction manual that came with the unit is in 'Chinglish' so to speak, and isn't that detailed/useful. No installation instructions, but the installation procedure itself is reasonably straightforward, and there are two excellent YouTube video guides which I used to install it.

* Messy wiring loom - it will take some effort to tuck it in sufficiently for the unit to fit in the dash, but I think this is the case with most custom double-din units.

* Unfortunately it only works when the ignition is in position II. The seller has claimed that this is by design, to prevent battery drain. This may be easily fixed by doing a simple wiring 'hack', which Stoney has kindly suggested to me. I can discuss this, if anyone is interested.

* The eBay Seller (A-sure) is an overseas-based seller (Hong Kong?), their eBay feedback seems decent enough, and they seem to assure you that customer satisfaction is #1 priority. They have been responsive to all my emails/questions so far, but time and experience will ultimately tell. Shipping was pretty fast though, with Royal Mail.

* Hefty £270 price tag, at the time of buying it, but I was a little apprehensive of the cheaper WinCE-based units. Some of them have decent software, some of them don't, its all down to luck how good the unit you get is, but you are stuck with whatever software is preloaded on the unit. At least with Android, if the hardware is decent, you can choose your own software.

Hello Incontro, just about to order your unit for my focus facelift. Everything still going well for you?

Wondering did you order the reverse camera with the unit or separately?

Any links / advice would be appreciated.

The battery drainage issue is a problem with many of the chinese units; the better ones actually managed to work it out. It speaks volumes of the quality of these things when the vast majority of the chinese manufacturers would rather just disconnect a single cable than actually fix the problem. Do you really want that in your vehicle?

Nick, the unit I have only ever works in position II, so battery drain isn't an issue in my case.

Also last summer I left my car unattended for a whole month in my garage (I went overseas), with the unit installed and battery left connected, and the car started up with no troubles after I arrived back.

Hi Gareth,

Yes my unit still works perfectly (knock-wood). I have had lots of comments from coworkers, friends, family, and also mechanics who have noticed it. Makes long drives 10x more pleasurable.

I ordered mine without the reverse camera. It would be nice to have it, but it was not essential for me at the time I ordered it.

Thanks folks for the replies. Really appreciate it. I think I'll go ahead and order later when I'm home. Just can't decide if I should source the number plate reverse camera myself or but it off A-sure when I order unit.

It's basically all up to you. If there isn't that big difference in prize when paying for one from A-Sure, get that one and at least you'll receive it all together in one package. Otherwise you'd have to mess with the wiring twice, if the stereo comes first and you're like me and must "play" with everything new right away :D

But quality-wise it's the same camera either from A-Sure or from any other seller.

Although be aware, that they often offer the camera for Focus Mk2, which has little different number plate lights than the facelift. It's still available for the facelifted Focus as well, but you might end up buying it separately eitherway...

Cheers scorpionsx. I noticed the two options of camera and mine is the facelift one with no screws to insert. Thanks for the help. I'll just order with the stereo. Update when fitted boys 👍

Absolutely, but what I meant was it just goes to show what sort of quality these units are in general. I still have an Xtrons thing in mine which is only reliable as I've hacked the thing around so much.

It appears as if a lot of these units are sourced from similar places and rarely are any two the same even if they're badged identically; it depends which components are sourced the cheapest.

Eonon appear to be the best of a bad bunch, Xtrons I generally wouldn't touch again however their UK support guys on the forum are on the ball.

Biggest point of failure in these is generally the power rail and the SD card slots; they're mounted in questionable ways on many of the Ford models and whilst the card slot itself will stand tens of thousands of insertions of an SD card, the mounting (SD card on a tiny PCB mounted perpendicularly to the display mainboard) isn't half as good; daily insertions/removal will probably give them a lifespan of a few months at best. Some models have the SD card slots connected to the mainboard (either display mainboard or main unit mainboard) via cable and they're typically a lot better. Not many people would be willing to take them apart to find out which is which though!

Just a tip:

If you are definitely going to want a reverse camera sooner or later, I highly recommend you order one now, and install the stereo and camera all in one go, it will save you a lot of hassle. Reason being the wiring loom for the stereo can be tricky to tuck into the dash, so you will have to wrestle with the wiring twice if you install them separately.

Another tip:

When fitting the headunit; take out the two air vents allowing your hand to fit in where the vents are,

see guide: http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/63689-guide-fitting-aftermarket-headunit-mk25-focus-2008-2011/

This way you can lift up the loom while sliding in the headunit.

I've 16 RCA's and 3 usbs at rear of mine aswell as the standard loom,

I found this method easiest when fitting👍

Remove both centre dash vents to allow your hand reach in to the rear of the headunit and assist fitting,

To remove the vents

Obtain two flat head screwdrivers,

Insert them in to the clips inside the vent and lift screwdrivers upwards while pulling out the vent.

Slide headunit in to cage until clips catch in to place:

Question for the more knowledgeable people on here:

I want to buy a reversing camera, and hook it up to my custom satnav unit. Is the shape of the one labelled 'Focus' in the image below really suitable for a Mk2.5 Focus?

The one on the right is for a Mk2 not Mk2.5.

The one on the left is shown as for a Mondeo but is the same fitment as the Mk2.5 Focus.

I'd suggest using the tailgate handle camera, rather than the number plate ones, its more centred and mine hasn't fallen to bits unlike the first one I got

I've seen Lenny's and Brigante's guide yesterday.

Truth be told, the amount/complexity of work looks very difficult - not sure I trust myself to be pulling apart loads of pieces of interior trim and rubber.

Even if I do, I need pretty much a full uninterrupted day in the garage doing it patiently (rather than rushing, which is when I make costly mistakes).

Unless someone near Surrey/Berkshire wants to lend a hand. I'll buy you a sixpack
