just found these after trawling the net looking for a code for mr focus_ ire any way hope you people dont mind......

DTC Codes

Here is a bit of info for the test mode of the focus dash .. long but informative

To access the test mode, hold the trip meter reset button in and turn the key to the on position, then the guages will do a full sweep and state guage on the LCD.. you are then able to prett the button to get the details

First digit structure is as follows:

Pxxxx for powertrain

Bxxxx for body

Cxxxx for chassis

Uxxxx for future systems

Second digit structure is:

P0xxx Government required codes

P1xxx Manufacturer codes for additional emission system function; not required but reported to the government

Third digit structure is:

Px1xx measurement of air and fuellb_icon1.png

Px2xx measurement of air and fuel

Px3xx ignition system

Px4xx additional emission control

Px5xx speed and idle regulation

Px6xx computer and output signals

Px7xx transmissionlb_icon1.png

Px8xx transmission

Px9xx control modules, input and output signals

The fourth and fifth digits designate the individual components and systems.

Here's a generic list of DTC codes for reference, makes the post a bit long but should do. These are for SAE standard ones, as used for SAE J2012 OBD-II:

Anatomy of the Diagnostic Trouble Code

A DTC is made up of 5 digits. The figure below demonstrates the

composition of a DTC. With this information it is easier to trouble shoot a DTC

without knowing the description of the code.

Types of DTC's

There are two categories of DTC's that apply to OBD II. They are listed

below with Type A being the more severe.

Type A

1. Emissionslb_icon1.png related.

2. Requests illumination of the MIL after one failed drivinglb_icon1.png cycle.

3. Stores a freeze frame DTC after one failed driving cycle.

Type B

1. Emissions related.

2. Sets a Pending Trouble Code after one failed driving cycle.

3. Clears a Pending Trouble Code after one successful driving cycle.

4. Turns on the MIL after two consecutive failed driving cycles.

5. Stores a freeze frame after two consecutive failed driving cycles.

There are a lot more, including the 'P1xxx' codes that are manufacturer specific, but that'll do for a start...

Here's some more - instrument cluster specific, but generic across all sorts of vehicles as a quick Google search will show. I've also got the equivalent SAE codes listed, which are the official generic ones, the ones that are displayed on the dash are an FMC code format as far as I can tell.

This lot suggests the 262 DTC code is an SCP error - nothing to worry about, just a comms glitch. And any other DTC code that appears on the dash is going to correspond to the second column of the data below, any other codes aren't displayed on the dash, you'll need a readout device to get them.

The table formatting is all messed up, but you should get the idea, the titles should be in 3 columns.

Great information there mate, just a quick one tho, which section of the test mode do you get the P codes? All I get is DTC #01 9601?

Hi Stephen, that is the only DTC code, some dont return a P code.

I had this only a few days ago on the CMAX, when the battery died!

Handy to have an updated list there Martyn, Thanks for sharing!

the top half, pcb and u codes are found on the dash sweep, and tells you how to read them, what the letter stands for, the second number 3rd number, then the 4th and 5th you pick of the list......

Hi mate, so the DTC code could be anything could it? It's saying its to do with the PATS but as discussed in the other post it's original key so I'm just at a loss trying to figure it out

When the car is set up in the plant and the keys and ignition system are paired for the first time the car registers a 9601 fault as the key obviously has not yet been accepted by the ECU.

The code usually stays on the system as they simply don't bother to remove it.

This was explained to me by my friendly auto locksmith I call on a lot. (surprising how many people I come across through work that lose car keys or lock them in their vehicles.)

There's a few different issues regarding PATS as seen below:

9600 PATS Ignition Key Transponder Signal is Not Received - Damaged Key or non-PATSKey

9601 PATSReceived Incorrect Key-Code from Ignition Key Transponder (unprogrammed Encoded Ignition Key)

9602 PATS Received Invalid Format of Key-Code From Ignition Key Transponder (Partial Key Code)

9681 PATSTranceiver Signal is Not Received (Not Connected, Damaged, or Wiring)

Thanks Clive, for the Engine System Fault light would the best bet to be to disconnect the battery for a while then reconnect to reset everything?

It may still be persistent in the memory but worth a try.

If that doesn't work, a simple OBD reader (I use a bluetooth one to my phone) will do it.

No problem will try it, the mechanic actually used a hand held one the other day and no fault codes came up. Where did you get that bluetooth one? Would be seriously handy, or did u acquire it ;)

Yeah I bought one for £12 and bought Torque Pro (about £3?) for my 'droid. Works a treat, reads and clears the code, and Torque gives me shed loads of info on the sensors. Very portable, very cheap!

  • 1 year later...

Sorry to ask, but the error code I have is common according to the treads, but there does not seem to be a explanation for R0608 followed by ERfail 0608

any ideas, I have been on google 3 hours and concerned I am chasing the wrong code

thanks bulebell 1

is this of the dash test? or from a scanner?

from the dash test.

the issue is the car starts, all warning lights come on, and no throttle response, the rev counter does not move. switch off and re start, well try to, but the mileometre go off and fills with dashes only, the starter does not start. switch it of and on or press the trip button, the miles re appear, and the car will start no problem. the car wil rev 4K plus, the the EML initialiy flick off but comes straight back on. the car drives fine, no spoke etc, followed a few threads and found the self test function, but unsure if I am chasing the right thing. spent 300 at fords for them to replace the maf sensor, worked fine for a day, abd then same problem.

this is my sisters car, had it from new, FSH by ford, 122k miles. never thrashed in its life, so wondering if it needs a raging or moyles oils topping up.

best thing do is to buy a scanner and get the codes of the ecu.... could be a cluster problem, could be a battery problem, a wiring problem ie sensor down....

somebody on here will be along with more knowledge than me to assist you.....

should be serviced every 5k, oil n filter. air filter change upon visual inspection.... id do the fuel filter once a year, ppl say no but i do.... the 1.6 tdci are prone to turbo failure do the lack of oil changes wich means oil breaks down forming sludge and this in time blocks the feed to the turbo.. but you dont have this problem, but maintain is a must....
