Valve/piston Contact

I have a 2001 Focus 1.8 Zetec.

Can someone please tell me if valve/piston contact will occur on this model if the timing belt fails, resulting in valve damage.

I have been told that some Focus engines have this problem but the 1.8 Zetec doesn't

This can happen on all modern engines, petrol or diesel, (that have valves) apart from rotary or two-stroke engines (as they don't have valves)

My understanding is that the 1.8 and 2.0 engines are non-interference, but only when turned by hand. If the belt snaps at anything above 1500 revs, the inertia and variability of the timing will bring the valves and pistons in to contact.

The 1.8 will make contact if the belt snaps at 1000rpm or more even at idle it usually knackers 2 valves minimum

I would expect a minimum of 4 valves damaged. 2 of the pistons are going to be in the same position, albeit on different strokes so 2x inlet and 2 exhaust valves

Thanks.

I have 5 replies, I think and all agree that valve damage will occur. I guess I'd better get the belt replaced.

Thanks again to everyone.
