durv Cymru Posted February 19, 2013 Share Posted February 19, 2013 I thought I'd just post my recent experiences regarding the pesky EGR valve on my 55 1.6 tdci focus. Had to act following numerous and increasing limp mode activations and associated red cog illuminations. Spent a few evenings on this forum which convinced me that blanking it off was the way to go. (thanks to all the expert contributions) First tried unplugging the EGR valve with very positive results although it brought the engine MIL light on after the 3rd start. Bought a stainless steel plate off flea bay for the price of a pint and fitted it on Saturday. I only removed the engine cover bracket and pushed the fuel filter out the way 6 bolts in total. Found no need to remove the plastic scuttle or wipers. Used the wife's small mirror to see the 2 bolts on the EGR and slacken them off. Slid the plate manifold side of the gasket and tightened it all up etc. Including re-attaching the plug and restting the MIL it only took about 30 minutes. Happy to report 250 miles with no limp mode and no engine lights on. If you're in any doubt, give it a go. It's not challenging and the benefits are immediate. FOCA Posted February 20, 2013 Share Posted February 20, 2013 probably no performance benefits but its the crap from building up and throwing engine lights Theoretically there are performance benifits because the burnt exhaust gases that are normally injected into the engine are replaced by (relatively) cool clean air, The EGR valve/ system may operate at specific revs/ conditions (eg at certain low revs/ at part throttle) so the EGR valve may be designed to close at higher revs or full throttle So the difference fitting a solid plate may be quite subtle and may be percieved as "smoother running" or "less flat spots" and not "better performance" but nevertheless, the engine should pull/ pick up better within from low revs (in the "EGR zone") - so a slight performance improvement is normal To get the full benifit, the inlet manifold/ EGR valve needs to be cleaned out completely, and the ECU reset. this may give a more noticable improvement If 2 solid plates are used, (one near the inlet/ EGR and one close to the exhaust manifold/ EGR cooler) and the EGR pipe is removed, this can have further performance (and efficiency/economy) benifits, because the inlet stays cooler (cooler = denser charge = more oxegen per cc = more power) and the volume between the engines exhaust outlet to turbine is reduced/ less exhaust energy is lost, reducing lag, increasing throttle response/ power Again, this is not a massive gain, but adds up in conjunction with other modifications, like remaps, bigger intercoolers etc, and economy is liable to be a little bit better. Interesting...Also the flat spot I was having is just my right foot,I only slightly depress the pedal normaly but today I booted(put my foot down) and boy did it fly(well for an estate it wasn't too bad)lol...and no flat spots... :) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Also I have a battery drain as the engine managements staying on because of a fault. I was wondering if I put the blacking plate on will this sort this. Less smoke, beter pick up, no lights in the dash. but I also found I'm getting less mpg. was having around the 50 mpg mark but it dropped to anything from 40 to 45.so took the plate of. Now it's back up to the 50 again. Is this normal??. Exact same thing with me mate. Was getting 49 MPG around 4 months ago, blanked EGR and MPG has dropped significantly to 42 MPG. FOCA Posted April 14, 2014 Share Posted April 14, 2014 I found my MPG improved (as well as the performance) with the EGR blanked, the trip computer / displayed MPG may not be accurate/ may not be reading the true MPG and perhaps fitting a blanking plate changes the displayed MPG Theoretically the MPG should improve with the plate fitted (cleaning out the inlet manifold and resetting the ECU (as well as the trip computer) may help/ get the most out of the plate) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

EI3HG Posted June 27, 2015 Share Posted June 27, 2015 My Son's 05 TDi 1.6 Focus engine just stopped the other day, towed it to a mate's garage and he put the OBDII reader on it and says its the EGR valve - he also said the solenoid coil is open. I've ordered a blanking plate, but just wondering if I'll have to fool the system into thinking the coil on the solenoid is still working. In that case anyone care to measure the resistance of it so I can put in a resistor to simulate it? Gordiekev Posted May 5, 2021 Share Posted May 5, 2021 Hi I am not sure if posting here on this old thread is the best way. So please let me know. I have just blanked my focus 1.6 tdci today. Mainly after reading up on the benefits. I can report that all turbo lag is now gone on the 2nd and 3rd gears. Well impressed. However, I squirted some soapy water on both connections of the Egr valve, to see if they were any exhaust leaks. The connection around where the plate was inserted did have a small leak.
