As usual, impressed with the quality of work there Lenny. Now that I see the preliminary work, I get what you mean about making a cavity. It will look stock once done and no wires will be visible. Plus, it will protect them too when having cargo in the boot. Liking the concept so far :)

So there's no power feeding the camera unless reverse gear is active i like that no risk of overheating.

Did you need to cut the Phono cable like charlie done in the guide in order to fish it through the rubber goose neck between the boot door and the roof compartment or did it fit without cutting?

Sorry Lenny just seen your query - I was able to route all the cables through the boot umbilical section without having to cut the end off the phono cable :) just as well as I'd already had to cut and rejoin it for routing through the grommet for the tailgate finisher to tailgate and would have been a pain trying to do that again in situ on the car with the headliner partially dropped etc.

Still took me ages to route the cable through to the dash as I went along the floor trying to follow the main loom routing as much as possible. After lots of trial and error I now know how to dismantle most of the interior trim panels, and have a nice neat cable installation which nobody will ever see

please excuse me here guys Just doing some calculations here altering and upgrading the shopping list,

I needed somewhere to document this information for future reference and get my head around the savings calculations,

so figured id put it here where i can bookmark it myself for later viewing.

And i suppose its relevant enough information some may also find of use,

Initially shopping list was:

JL Audio JX360/4

£170 cheapest supplier

Pioneer TS-A172Ci 2 Way ..350W

£79.99 cheapest supplier

Pioneer TS-E1702i ..180 W

£55.67 cheapest supplier

Total cost £305.66

Compared to JL Audio Package Deal: £259.00

£46 savings if purchasing Deal instead,

So whats in the deal?

Deal consists of:

JL AUDIO TR650-CSI 6.5" COMPONENT SPEAKER SYSTEM

&

JL Audio TR650-CXI 6.5" COAXIAL Speakers

&

The same Amp

JL AUDIO JX360.4 4 CHANNEL AMPLIFIER

&

CELSUS CNK8DR 8AWG Wiring Kit

Total package deal :£259.00

If deal items were purchased separately they cost:

JL AUDIO TR650-CSI 6.5" COMPONENT .. 225w

£73.50 cheapest supplier

JL Audio TR650-CXI 6.5" COAXIAL Speakers

£69.99 cheapest supplier

JL AUDIO JX360.4 4 CHANNEL AMPLIFIER

£170.00 cheapest supplier

CELSUS CNK8DR 8AWG Wiring kit

£12.95 cheapest supplier

Total: £326.44 purchasing as single items excluding cost of shipping each item separately,

Save £67.44 purchasing as a package Deal.

So plan is purchase JL Audio Package Deal @ £259.00:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121454888007?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Saving £46.66 in the pocket over initial plan.

Since saving a bit perhaps sell the JL AUDIO TR650-CSI 6.5" COMPONENT from the deal immediately at the RRP: £73.50

Aswell as the CELSUS CNK8DR 8AWG Wiring kit RRP.£12.95 and Purchase:

JL AUDIO C2-650 6.5" 2 WAY COMPONENT SYSTEM £139.50 instead:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JL-AUDIO-C2-650-6-5-COMPONENT-SPEAKER-SYSTEM-/121453943662?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item1c47381b6e

Or strike a deal with seller where i pay the difference of £63.50 and receive the C2 components instead of CSI's perhaps they would allow somthing off the CELSUS CNK8DR 8 GAUGE WIRING KIT RRP. £12.95

because i wont need it either already purchased Vibe Slick 8AWG wiring kit.

The above alteration there swapping JL CSI components for JL C2 components will mean I'm £16.84 out of pocket over initial plan if i alter the package deal but much better audio for the money invested compared to initial shopping list.

Also I've not calculated the savings from not having to pay shipping on three separate items, purchased as a package saves postage aswell so perhaps saving estimated £20-£25 on shipping by going with new plan and upgrading CSI to C2 components up front :) im happy with that.

I don't expect comments on this post as said I'm just thinking aloud and documenting some info for my own future reference.

Nicely done in finding that deal there Lenny. I reckon, if you can bargain with the seller and get the C2 components instead, it will be a steal. I had read loads of reviews about the C2 and there are a few videos on Youtube of people who had used them. Check out the info on Crutchfield. They don't need lots of power from the amp to drive them and with your chosen amp, they should sing! Rather than yourself in the car :P

The C2s have silk dome tweeters which helps smooth out the higher frequencies and sound a lot nicer than other component sets at this price point.

To just throw another idea at you, I would recommend reading up and maybe thinking about the Focal PS165 as a component set for the fronts. They are a little bit cheaper/around the same price than the JL Audio C2s and sound a bit different. I had a chance to hear them and they do sound very good. They are very similar to my sets of Focal 165KR and the PS165 run at 80W rms @4ohms. You might need to rethink of an amplifier for them and that would be a drawback as you would need something in the 80-100W rms(or more) x 4 range as an amp. But, the upside is that, it would have a lot more headroom and the Focal sound is somewhat different to others. It can be quite addictive as I found out! If you can find a dealer in Ireland, do give them a listen as you might just like it :)

Have a look at the reviews on amazon. The cheapest place I found them was on www.ebay.fr (France ebay) as they are a french company. I had my heart set on them for a very long while and in the end got lucky getting my set for cost price pretty much.

Also, just my personal opinion, I would not spend too much money on rear Speakers as if like you are planning to get a good set of front components, the rears will only be used for light fill for the sound. If you crank them up, it will tend to muddy the sound and dilute the musical listening experience. My advice, dedicate the better chunk of your budget to a good amplifier and a good set of front component Speakers. The rears can be taken care by a cheapo set as you will barely hear them. e.g in my car the balance of front/rear is set to mostly the front Speakers. If I put the rears up, the whole system sounds horrible to my ears. Just my 2 cents :)

Lenny, if you want a loan in the meantime, you can have my old stereo Ford headunit until you get your new Pioneer one. It's sitting in a box in the store room and would be be good put to use to keep it functioning. Better than hearing you sing or your old phone there :P

Update:

As items sell on eBay I'm recycling the funds back in to purchasing the replacement parts,

And thanks to Hassan whom told me about parcel Motel,

Ive been able to spend less on shipping and more on parts,

All of today's deliveries cost me 6 euro shipping :) 6 euro,

First time using parcel Motel to receive some items and its much like the Crystal maze show used to be on channel 4 in the 90's

They text me today informing me that there was a delivery awaiting collection and provided a password.

After work i went to the collection point,

Entered the password then suddenly BOOM!!

A random locker door burst open allowing me access to the delivery inside,

Must admit feeling like a lab rat when the door opened and found myself racing towards it,

Cant stop that feeling though its there design lol

Seriously what could be better than parcel motel.

Perhaps your boss presenting you with your delivery in work?

I dunno but seriously 6 quid for all shipped from uk.. Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad!!!!!

IMG_20141016_165808_zpsn8qbteha.jpg

So here we go:

Steering stalk control from a mk2 focus without voice button,

Won this for 99p  free shipping, unbelievable it actually arrived,

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251662364065?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

IMG_20141016_170201_zpsqmz1zfp_edit_1413

Now fitted and working 100% replacing the stalk with voice control button, which is listed on eBay and ready for despatch.

3.5mm AUX port splitter arrived:

IMG_20141016_170233_zpsuhq8wrm3.jpg

Focus Mk2 Double Din aftermarket stereo fitting kit arrived:

IMG_20141016_170424_zpsatjylkve.jpg

Double Din sized stereo surround

IMG_20141016_170533_zpsuj7n4dg_edit_1413

ISO conversion loom from ford fitting to aftermarket:

IMG_20141016_170605_zpsjctzz61u.jpg

Sony/pioneer steering stalk patch lead:

IMG_20141016_170652_zpsqcgcwgms.jpg

Aerial adaptor plug and ford stereo removal keys, not required on mk2.5 model but perhaps required for aftermarket stereo:

IMG_20141016_170623_zpsfaoi1zaa.jpg

Double Din aftermarket cage and sponge supports:

IMG_20141016_170720_zpsttuevgwx.jpg

IMG_20141016_170809_zpsto3okftz.jpg

That's today's delivery all ready for stereo which is planed for mid to end of November all going well.

Custom 10" sub enclosure is on route expecting arrival by mid next week, once delivered i can get a final trial fit on the mdf panel prior to nailing and glueing the four pieces of the panel together,

Stopped off in DIY store today picked up some 17mm nails, Gorilla Glue said to be perfect stuff for MDF bonding, and of course a sanding block to smooth off the edges,

IMG_20141016_165854_zps2m8c7toe.jpg

Ford Sony Stereo and facelift stereo surround now securely packaged and prepared for despatch to Newcastle.

Weight: 5kg

Height: 16"

Length: 15"

Width: 15"

IMG_20141016_202941_zpsua7nxrq_edit_1413

IMG_20141016_205001_zpsb9r5jdri.jpg

Plan is coming together nicely,

Done a little Photoshop of boot install plans too:

IMG_20141014_154458_zpshcuj4drm.jpg

Or perhaps use the JL audio speaker grills to reduce weight on the panel or create more space in the cavity for the fastplug connector by fitting 6.5" speaker spacers and use the grills supplied with Speakers to cover the holes.

Would also allow more sound and air flow in to cavity area:

IMG_20141014_154458_zpsseqecvvs.jpg3_zps

That's all for now more updates next week when the sub enclosure arrives,

Sorry Lenny just seen your query - I was able to route all the cables through the boot umbilical section without having to cut the end off the phono cable :) just as well as I'd already had to cut and rejoin it for routing through the grommet for the tailgate finisher to tailgate and would have been a pain trying to do that again in situ on the car with the headliner partially dropped etc.

Thanks mate ill be hounding you via Pm when it comes time to strip out the car and roof lining especially.

thanks for all the info mate but im gonna stick with the full JL audio package plan will be sufficient for my listening, its good quality for the price,

Not as good as the focal but then not as expensive,

The list I've created there seems to be good value for money so I'm happy with that better than initial plan and still around initial plan price.

I've no access to overtime anymore so i cant go over budget on this,

Offer still stands mate. Will bring it along with me next time we meet up. It would be a good thing it gets some use as I don't want it to freeze up :)

no thanks I'm very happy with the current application

Oh I bet you feel like it's Christmas already there with the parts arriving :p

more like piecing together a jigsaw puzzle, its great to be progressing through the list but realistically none of its any use now until the head unit arrives then the build begins to take shape and you start to get bang for buck,

But right now its just piecing together the foundations not much fun to be had just sign for delivery and store it.

I love it when a plan comes together. Like I said, Christmas coming early for you! And Parcel Motel is a godsend for us here in Ireland. Saves so much on postage! Plus, it's always exciting going to go pick it up from the motel. When that door opens, its ridiculous :P

You seem to have the parts coming along nicely. I like how the mock ups turn up. They make a lot more sense now and I like how all of the amps are lined up and you can't see the wires. An option, just in case the mono amp doesn't fit in the location you chose, you could always mount it on the other side of the 4 channel amp on the MDF. It would be nice to have some symmetry in your setup. Blame the OCD in me :)

Any thoughts about the Speakers yet?

I've no access to overtime anymore so i cant go over budget on this,

Also while on the subject of price,

I logged on to Caraudiodirect.co.uk and planned the entire sound system upgrade from there site and had intended to purchase from them aswell,

But prior to purchasing anything id search it on eBay,

Its come to a point where every single item on the list is cheaper purchasing from shop_ through eBay.co.uk and shipping with parcel Motel compared to Caraudiodirect.co.uk

For example Caraudiodirect wanted 150GBP to supply and deliver the custom focus sub enclosure,

eBay wanted 75gbp for same sub enclosure, free shipping to parcel Motel, then 6 euro/4GBP to have parcel Motel drop it to my local collection point,

Saving me 70 GBP on that purchase alone,

Another one is the 4ch amp its 35GBP cheaper from dynamic sounds on eBay.co.uk excluding delivery compared to Caraudiodirect,

They are great for displaying info on the items but rip off on price,

View on there site purchase on eBay, mammoth savings to be had.

Cool. I think you have a nice set there of components that will complement each other very well. Coupled that with the Silent Coat for sound deadening, you are on to a winning combination :)

Exciting times ahead man.

15 euro despatched to uk via tracked courier,

just print label,

scan it in yourself at parcel motel and put it in the cabinet,

IMG_20141017_153244_zpsbl0pmzx_edit_1413

My eldest daughter was with mevat the time and thought there was a large diameter vacuum pipe under the ground which shuttled the item to another cabinet close to the recipient  kids are great, i explained the boys in the van would be around later to sort it out.

Research and planning,

Earlier on last week we discussed the minor/only issue with having the 4 channel amp removable,

The problem is:

All audio signal from headunit travels via RCA cable to an amp then from the amp to the Speakers,

The 4 Channel amplifier will be mounted on a removable panel designed to be removed if bigger cargo space is required and seats need folding flat,

When the 4ch amp is removed there wont be any sound to the Speakers,

Just the permanent fitted sub,

I've acknowledged this minor technical difficulty earlier in the thread but at that point had not concluded a solid plan around this,

If i was to power the front Speakers from the headunits internal 50w amp through one feed

And

Power the same speaker with a cable from the 280w 4ch at the same time this would blow the head unit,

Initial plan then was to run two feeds to the front speakers,

One from head unit,

One from amp on MDF panel,

The feed from head unit would be separated by spade connectors under the glovebox,

So when the 4ch amp was absent from the car,

I can plug spades together thus powering front speakers from headunit.

The only big potential hazard with this plan was;

If i forgot to disconnect from the head unit again before returning the 4ch amp,

So i scrapped that plan as its too much risk of error.

There needed to be a setup that couldn't physically be both ways at the same time, because this setup needs to fit in with every day living where other matters distract the mind,

Removal and fitting needs to be 100% error proof as its easy to forget when doing unusual jobs that speakers are wired two ways.

So without further adieu here's the permanent plan of action:

The mdf sheet ill be in the boot compartment as saw in image:

IMG_20141014_154458_zpshcuj4drm.jpg

Now fold down rear seat to access cavity area between the MDF sheet and rear seat:

IMG_20141014_154700_zpsrgfyvz5q.jpg

Contained here are the vibe Vibe FastPlug which connects

Live,

Earth,

Signal ON/Off from stereo

To the amplifier

IMG_20141008_060716_zpshmmq6pib.jpg

There will also be two plug/sockets for the audio cables feeding to speakers from the amplifier,

IMG_20141018_085537_zpsvayw7zkn.jpg

See link:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/150947350292?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Each connector has four cores,

Plug 1

Feed to Front speakers

Socket 2

Feed to rear speakers

New vibe flatflex will be run to all speakers from these male connectors.

Now at the rear of the stereo i will cut the cables feeding from iso loom to front speakers,

Splice a new flatflex feed to these run it to the rear seat fitting one of those 4 core sockets on the end of it,

Thats front speaker feeds directly from stereo in same type connection socket.

Result:

An audio feed output from the head units internal amp is lying in the boot terminated in a female socket keeping the terminals insulated,

When the boot space needs expanding,

Unplug from amp and plug in to this female socket instead to run front speakers directly from headunit.

Completely fail safe not possible to double feed the line,

Saves a little weight on cable too as only one feed runs to each speaker.

The modification now fits in with every day living,

simple 2 minute process

Open doors,

Fold down seats,

Unplug connections from amp,

Plug in headunit feed,

Remove panel through door and store somewhere safe.

:)

Really looking forward to installation

I like this idea better than your previous one for the same reasons. Foolproof and you still retain the use of your bootspace when you need it. Also, shouldn't be too hard to implement. Nice :)
