Just Bought An 83 1.6 Cvh Ghia It Will Not Run Properly Plz Help

Hey dudes

I have just bought a 1983 Ford Escort 1.6 Ghia

It idles fine but as soon as you rev it etc it pops back through the carb

The Dizzy cap and rotor arm have been changed because it would not start at all with the old bits.

set of plugs might help

could be ignition timing out

if fitted with the VV carb, then the rubber diaphragm would be a poosible problem too

Hi Tony

It has a manual choke does that mean the carb has been changed.

I will change the plugs tomorrow and see if that makes a difference

to be honest mate, struggle to remember, been many a year since ive tinkered with the mk111

but think the VV was a standered fit, but were often changed to manual choke webers.

ignition timing is a high possibility for your problem, also have a close look at the ht lead connections on the cap and coil, make sure they're clean and pushed fully home..in other words, give the rubber caps a spray of wd40 and slide them back up the lead, push the leads fully home then slide the rubber caps back.

dont forget, if you dont know history of timing belt, then change that and the water pump as matter of course..think they used to recommend every 36k, but i used to do them at 30k as many failed a bit early.

was this a daily/regular runner before you bought it, or was it stored up

Am i correct in saying the cambelt looks easy on these, Is replacing the water pump easy too,

Iam thinking eventually a new distributor (lucas)

A new Cambelt

A new Waterpump

A weber carb if it has a manual choke converted vv

A major service me thinks too :-)

got a feeling the VV had a manual or auto choke...

VV is easily recognisable carb, lift off the air filter, if the top of carb has a plate that slides back then its a VV, in which case it will have the rubber diaphragm, which is to the right hand side of the carb facing forward..its a square 'bowl' about 2/3" diameter, held on by 4 screws...diaphragm is inside it. will dig deep in the memory bank if you want a rundown in how to change it :)

belt and pump is a simple task for a reasonably confident diy'er.

there is a very faint possibility i might have a brand new boxed weber conversion for this, will have a look and let you know

dizzy is a good idea as they were a bit of a weak point...do you know if this has a seperate or built in/on amplifier..if seperate, they were another common problem

According to the brochure which i have lol it has an autochoke

But it appears to have a manual choke, confusing lol head scratching

If you can find that weber that would be great

i have got a feeling there is something on the side of the distributor with a small multiplug i will check tomorrow :-)

one little thing that i cant understand is why is the 1.3 cvh 69bhp and the 1.6 79 just 10hp difference for 300cc ?

a friend closed his spares shop few years ago, i bought a load of classic ford parts from him as he was about to send them to the scrap...including a number of webere conversions..will have a look what i have as it was a few years ago, but includes starters/alternators/brakes etc etc...if i have anything for yours will let you know.

have just sold the job lot to a classic car parts supplier, but he wont mind a few changes in the deal as he specialises in 50/60/70's anyway.

think the carbs could be converted to manual choke, seem to remember doing a few, but was more common to fit the weber conversion as they were a far superior carb

got a feeling the amp was seperate on the lucas, if so, you might find it by the coil

another worthwhile and common job on these, were the valve stem seals..there is a cheap tool available that meant you didnt have to remove the head to do them...change them all in about 1-2 hours. be happy to run you through that too if your interested in doing it

AHH the old VV carb gone !Removed! syndrome!!

Love workin on CVH engines tho!! Really simple and theraputic. The Dizzy's did cause issues with these, specifically the amp on the side of it.

More than likely the carb knackered tho especially if its been sitting for a bit, the VV was a pile of shat from new let alone 30 years old! LOL

If you were closer id come n help, I love the Mark 3 for simplicity etc, wish I still had my RS

had a customer with a genuine, low mileage xr3i up until recently..he sold it in the end.

but like you, loved tinkering about with them, well maintained they lasted forever, simple but effective

There is a conditionor by the coil and has no wires going to it lol

going by the pics, the blue cap was a lucas/motorcraft dizzy.....

spooky enough, was looking at an old escort today with the same set up..the amp was on the dizzy.

he had not long replaced the whole dizzy, including amp, got it off ebay, a recon which cost him about £45

had a look for the carb, no joy mate im afraid....unless you want to change the engine to a sierra/transit 2.0 ohc

not had a chance to go through rest of the bits, but when i can will have a look for escort cvh bits and let you know
