Teh_singh
Im 18 and am looking at some insurance for my fiesta. I would like to include the benifit to drive other cars third party. All companies say you need to be 25 apart from the co - op Are there any other companies that allow you to drive other cars under 25 years old? Thanks
FOCA
Yes, you could get motor traders insurance or comercial insurance,(obviously you would have to be a motor trader / be in business- and be able to proove that :) ) you may be surprised how affordable it could be, alternatively try Adrian Flux I am insured for any car (including modified) for domestic and business use and have premium "get you home insurance" too - you would not believe how cheap it is - Strangely, i can drive a 1000Hp GTR but not an Escort Cosworth - wierd, huh? With the modifications on my car in my signature it would probably cost a kings ransome to insure it if i was 18, and it only has 160Hp - insurance is a strange thing - there was a chap on here that said it would cost a fortune to insure a Fiesta with big brakes etc and it would be cheaper to insure a muck faster hot Corsa! Could you maybe recommend any companies? My parents own a construction business so maybe I could try trade. What companies would you recommend for trade? FOCA
Speak to your parents about how you can sort something out (Legally and ethically, of course!) The Federation of Small Businesses can be very helpful, and can even obtain a discount, i recommend them
DanGersFord
He is on his girlfriends brothers insurance so thats maybe why but he's covered to drive any car and he's only 21 and passed his test just last year
hubby1959
He is on his girlfriends brothers insurance so thats maybe why but he's covered to drive any car and he's only 21 and passed his test just last year That's very doubtful, as it usually only covers the policy holder to drive other cars third party, not named drivers. If I remember it right the clause says: "The policy holder may also drive a motor vehicle not belonging to him or hired to him under a higher purchase agreement" And as far as I know most companies won't give that entitlement to under 25's
DanGersFord
Honestly I didnt believe him myself but he phoned up and double checked and he definately is allowed to drive other cars obviously aslong as they have valid insurance

FOCA
Using one persons to insure another if the other is in fact the main driver is called "fronting" and i believe is illegal - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/insurance/motorinsurance/8466580/Parents-illegally-insuring-their-children.html i also spotted this - http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2011/oct/14/fronting-car-insurance-costs-parents
Stoney871
If your name is on the V5 then you can not be insured on it as an additional driver. Also, where a lot of people trip up is that they automatically assume that because they're fully comp they can drive anyones car. That's not always the case, i recommend checking with the insurance company to confirm coverage and also a commonly overlooked point is that if you drive someone else's car it must hold insurance under the owners name. Many people come undone on that one and get penalised for it.

hubby1959
I've managed to get insurance cheaper for my daughter by going on one of those multi-car policies, I have my own car insured for just myself, and my daughter has her car insured for herself, with me as a named driver, both policies are in our own names and we are the main drivers for our own vehicles, with me being able to move her car out of my way when she blocks me in. This is all perfectly legal and each of us retain our own no claims bonus. It also lowered my insurance premium as well
Steelie600
One word of caution here, just make 100% sure you are covered. I was working as a Taxi driver last year on the companies insurance. And they changed the policy, but forgot to put MY car on the policy. Long and short of it I spent a night in Lockerbie nick had my car confiscated and got a 30 month ban for driving for hire and reward. Even though I was working for the company and its not my job to make sure im insured, as a driver it is my responsibility to make sure in the eyes of the law. I get my license back next November. Teh_singh
After many hours of searching only CO - OP offer it for under 25's. So I may just consider paying £4400 for 1 year :'(
