Fastest Quickest Acceleration 50-70Mph In Top 5.0 Seconds Mondeo Vs Supercars - Hot Hatches

Well my car did not seem like it was performing right

The turbo seemed to be making a new noise scince i came back from the rolling road dyno, and it seemed a bit "laggy" and did not seem to be picking up so well from really low revs

it was hard to say though, and i know these things can be deceptive, i thought i would test it and compare it to some previous figures (i kept detailed acceleration figures during the development of the car)

(disclaimer - all timing done safely off road, i have over 8 years with no accidents, claims or convictions, i don't speed on the road and i have special skills & training, - stay safe/ don't time yourself when you are driving!)

I thought i would use a high gear to check it right so i found a suitable stretch of tarmac and timed my 50-70mph using the speedo and stopwatch (and stopwatch operator)

i did it then looked at the stopwatch 5.0 seconds! i squinted at it thinking it must be a 6 , we tested it again this time slightly uphill, making sure i was in top and pressing the start button before 50, and stopped it after 70 (and it really was 50 and 70)- 5.3 seconds

We tested it the same way Autocar do - accelerating "through" the timed points.

This got me thinking - how does that time compare to other cars like hot hatches and supercars?

i made a list -

(often cars have 6 or 7 (or even more) gears, and the 50-70mph is timed in 5th), and the times i have aquired do not state which gear, its in, Supercars often have stratospheric top speeds & gearing to match - so are right out of the power at 50 in top. other cars have big, torky V8 engines and "low" gearing (Range Rover) or electric motors with massive torque at low revs (Honda hybrid) race/ rally cars are sometimes fitted with low gearing - the Mondeo has its standard gearing from the factory (5-speed mtx 75) - in this test, the 5-speed has the advantage, but it does not have a ridiculusly low top / final drive with a 130/140ish top speed (Autobanns, of course!) - ive put the top speed in to give a comparison, the 5.9 is an old figure, recorded last year, when the car was heavier, the speedo and using the stopwatch is not accurate so i just put the 50-70 in my signature a conservative "< 6"

I often get told "but you could just drop agear/ 3 gears" but that is not the test, there is a 70mph limit in this country/ nation, so how fast the car goes from 100 to 130 is not important, (because there is a 70mph limit) dropping gears every time you need to overtake takes time a quick 50-70mph is important for quick, safe, legal overtaking, and reduces you TED (time exposed to danger) off dual carrigways (in response to "why does you car need to be so fast/ quick" questions )

shows your mondy fares quite well against the big boys! it surprises me though that the bigger boys take longer!

Surprised at some of the figures from more "sporting" offerings

you want to drive a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X FQ400 there is so much lag (turbos are massive) , if your not in right gear you start to jerk and its wanting to stall... in 5th gear 50-70 would take it about 9-10 secs but drop it down a gear thats a different story in the FQ400 you need to be in right gear to have all that power or lag will eat you up

The mondeo is already at 1800rpm which equals about 70Bhp and 100ft-lbs (135Nm) at 50mph, which is probably more than many of the supercars/ performance cars (at these speeds in top gear) a lot of performance / supercars have very high gearing (for the high top speed) and the power/ torque comes higher up the rev range

this makes the Mondeo vey quick in the midrange/ overtaking/ out of bends/ cross country (for what it is) and it can almost never be "cought out" in the wrong gear - it is not as strong (realative to performance cars) 0-60 or at high speed but im working on that

The 2.2TDCi is rapid also... Even the 155 version... The newer 200bhp version is stupidly quick!

Interesting point - but what if it was in top - you can't drive around in second gear all day, if you are just "crusing" along you are liable to be in top -

So you are in top, in traffic, at 50mph, a gap emerges where you can accelerate upto 70mph, in my Mondeo, you just press the accelerator, without having to change down, this gives an immedeate advantage (you would be surprised how long it takes to change gear) and allows the Mondeo to pull ahead initially

I timed the 50-70mph in 4th and its now 4.3seconds, on the speedo (used to be 5.0secs)

I suppose if you are a Cop (or a robber!) or drive on German Autobahns your 70 to 100mph or more would be important, but for us law abiding UK motorists 70mph is the limit for now, so the speed supercars can achieve is largely academic/ is meaningless

Took me a while to realise that

My modded 2.0L...........30-70mph 6.7secs 50-70mph in top 5secs / 4th 4.3secs (on speedo) (5-speed box)

ST- TDCI 2.2L 155PS - 30-70mph 8.3secs 50-70mph in top 11.6secs / 5th 6.5secs / 4th 4.9secs (6- speed box)

A stock ST-TDCI would need to be in 4th to match the top gear 50 to 70, and have a Bluefin/ remap, decat & large FMIC to match the top gear 50-70mph >>>in 5th<<<! (that would bring the 50-70mph >in 5th< down to about 5 secs)

to put the 6.7second 30-70mph (on speedo, using 3rd/ 4th) acceleration into perspective, the new 247Bhp Focus is only slightly quicker at 6.5second, the 50 - 70 in top is slower in the st (me 5.0 - 2013 Focus ST 6.1)

The early mk4 2.2Ls are the best ones - they can be remapped to 220Hp they are a bit heavy though (hatch is 200kg more than my lightened estate!) and i would be surprised if they could get anywhere near the FOCA- mobiles 50-70mph in top (looked for figures but could not find them)

I keep doing more work on it and it keeps getting quicker - it does seem to have plenty power for safe overtaking!

Never!

I found a Mondeo ST220 performance table - the ST220 30-70mph Works out at 6.8secs, i timed a 6.7sec 30-70, this was a target i had set (to match/ beat the ST220 acceleration) so i am pleased with that (even though its just the 30-70mph/ the 50-70mph in top is already a lot quicker )

Looks like ive got myself a quick car there!

I wonder how a 1.6 petrol Focus would compare LOL

14.5 seconds - i found these specs -

2009 Focus 1,6L

5 speed 1290kgs 116PS/114Hp 160Nm/ 118ft-lbs at 4250rpm

0-60mph- 11.6secs 0-100mph-36.6secs. - top speed 116mph

50-70mph in top (5th) 14.5secs

Alll offroad/ on the autobahn, of course!

Not the quickest car on the road but close to the Dodge Viper 50-70mph in top! - i will add it to the list

A life-time wait as I expected, but I wonder how quick it could do it if you dropped down a cog.

9.6secs in 4th or 6.5secs "flat out"/ through-the-gears (50-70mph)

Edit - On mine the 50-70 mph is 4.64secs in 4th and 4.29 in 3rd/ its interesting how the diesel does not get much quicker in the lower gears, the 50-70mph in top of the modified, turbocharged 2.0L diesel Mondeo is quicker than the 50-70mph of the NA 1.6L Focus, even if the Focus is "redlining" it through the gears

Does wherever your getting these stats do bike figures?

I'd like to see how my one fares against some of these motors!

What bike is it?

9 times out of 10 a bike is a lot quicker than a car, even a realatively low- powered BMW bike has some astonishing figures, there is a drag strip in Crail, Scotland, they race cars and bikes at the same meeting, the bikes beat 800Hp GTRs and 600Hp EVOs, by a big margin some of the bikes are doing sub 9 second times and reaching 130mph in the 1/4 mile

On the other hand i was following a bike the other day, it was wet and we were going onto a motorway via a tight left-hander, i could get the power down a lot earlier than the bike, so i was coming out of the corner 20mph faster than the bike, i had to lift off to stop running into the back of it, much to my surprise (and probably his!) ok so it might have been a crap rider, but i dont think the bike could have cornered as fast as the car in the wet the car has a lot more rubber on the road, helps on the brakes, and off the line ("launch") of course, once the bike gets going it will be quicker than a car - bikes and cars are very different, and i don't think you can really compare them (i used to ride bikes and tuned road and race bikes) its been a long time since i was last on a bike, though

Its a 2012 Street triple R.

Your Bang on there. If its dry and warm, 9 times out of ten a bike is quicker. As soon as it rains or the temp drops to the point where the tyres cant heat up properly, the bike is slower. My dad had a set of Pilot Road 3's on his last bike. Seriously impressive in the wet! and the newer Pilot road 4 is supposed to be even better. You'll never get your knee down, but tyre technology has moved on massively in the last 10 years or so. You'd be impressed if you've been off of bikes for a while.

Just to prove your point, I managed to get in front (and stay in front!) of an Audi R8 on a 2007 R6 in the dry. I couldn't get past a guy in a diesel mondeo on a Daytona 955i in the rain....

I was just curious how the figures looked. Your right, there is no comparison between cars and bikes!
