Temperature Gauge Query

I have a 53 plate Mondeo 2.0 litre TDCi and was wondering where the temperature gauge should be pointing to when warmed up? Mine sits just above 60 unless im going up a hill, when i put my foot down it rises to about halfway then settles back to just above sixty when on the flat again, any ideas?

Cheers

it should be smack bang in the middle. mines used to sit just at the 1st line. i changed my 2 stats. water stat & oil stat & it cured it. if your cars running too cool, you'll be getting a bit less MPG as the car increases fuel as it thinks its cold weather etc. it'd be worth changing em if yours is running cool. cant remember what figures are on gauge, but know it should be right in middle, most of the time, when engines is at normal running temps.

before i changed mines,I went to Ford & asked their head mechanic and....."ah that looks normal to me mate". what a loada cr*p they come away with at times. When i saw him next time & showed him it running at the middle of the gauge,he kinda looked a bit sheepish/embarassed

actually,i did my water thermostat at same time, but as it happens it didnt need doing as it opened/closed ok(but changed it anyway).\But the oil stat DID need changing. It was partially open all the time.

its quite easy. be prepared for a lot of loss of fluids though.(just stick a big container underneath & you'll be ok).

Ive heard a few people saying theres a knack to changing thermostats(coolant)so ya dont get it flooding out,but every time ive tried it p*sses out lol.I tried the 'releasing header tank cap etc before starting then replacing it,but everytime the coolant just flows out(especially if your stat is stuck open).do you know where the oil & water stats are located?

oil stat is under inlet manifold(1 bolt if i remember correctly)

oil stat=Oilstat4_zps1d1a5cd8.jpg

water/coolant=looking at car from the front, its to the right of block, where pipes join into it:(3 torx screws i think)photo-1_zps998221a8.jpg

If you want a bit of self satisfaction give it a go. you'll be able to do it.(you might lose a bit a skin off your knuckles though lol).

anyway even if you put it into a garage,it shouldnt cost more than £30 id say. anymore than that,& id take it elsewhere. remember & put the same colour of coolant back in the car as came out.

  • 2 weeks later...

Took it to garage, told them it may need both changing, they argued til they were blue in the face it wouldnt be the oil stat because 'i'm a timed served ford technician'

They changed the water stat.......................still the same, i did try to tell them. Booked in again to have the oil stat done monday, lets see if we are right ^_^

Im keen to know if it'll cure it now that a ford mech has said "it wont be oil stat definitely!".

All i can say is it cured mines. Someone told me it wouldnt have made a difference & when it did he was surprised. He owned 2 mondeos too lol.

Also i changed my coolant stat 1st as well,& it never made any diff, but think i already told you that. I still think the oil stat Replacement will do the trick though

How rubbish are these "time served Ford technicians" - the oil stat is a common problem,

as is the Mk3 diesel Mondeos being overcooled and the heater taking too much heat out of the system

There is an electric 3-element heater on some cars, in-between the engine and cabin heater, the elements can fail, so using the heater drops the temp even more

whats your limp mode story?

have you read the codes?

Happened when i first bought the car, gave it a boot and it went into limp mode, took it back to where i bought it and ran a diag on it whereby it didnt actually go into limp mode but said there was a fuelling issue so they replaced the fuel filter.

Didnt happen again for a week then happened again when i was in outside lane of dual carriageway, put my foot down in 6th cos a car was zooming up my rear, straight into limp mode, had to pull onto hard shoulder

had another diag done, said something about the fuel rail? not sure what he said because i was actually in the garage for my temp issue so a wasnt listening lol

First diag had about 6 or 7 things that came up, one was a fault where it was saying my tank was empty so no fuel to engine, no injector faults tho.

Ive heard this issue is quite common and there is no one fix for it, trial and error i suppose but i love the car so i shall put up with it for now

do you have an iphone/android? I keep an elm327 bluetooth in the glove compartment. Got RoqyBT4 & Rev/Dashcommand on iPhone,so if any codes come up or need live data(fuel trim/MAF/MAP/IAT/ boost etc),I just plug it in,start Dashcommand,& voila.

If you wanna know how to get these Apps for ahem' slightly cheaper ahem(free),let me know.I'll tell you how to get em in a PM
