Looking To Buy A Fiesta

Hello,

Passed my test a few weeks ago and looking to buy a fiesta MK6 (02-08).

I've been getting some quotes and the 1.25 is affordable, and is getting some good reviews for being reliable and generally one of the better first cars to get.

I've done some research and the 1.25 comes with the Zetec and the Duratec engine, the only difference I can see is that the Zetec is a little faster. What other differences are there? Is it the same engine, changed slightly? Will it be more reliable, and is it the better choice ultimately?

The speed difference isn't too important for me, but the cars which appear to have the Zetec engine in them seem to be more expensive (not just looking at the trim) although that might be because they appear to be a little bit more expensive.

I've decided to sign up to the forum as you guys will have the expert opinion.

Thanks,

User26

- Happy to give any more information etc if needed to make a good decision :)

Hi mate and welcome.

I had a 2007 1.4 Zetec model in ocean blue and it was a great car. You mention you wanted to know the difference between the Zetec and Duratec but you'll find that the Duratec is the engine that's in the petrol Fiesta's.

The fiesta came in Studio, style, Zetec, Zetec S, ST and Titanium versions with (I think) 1.25 / 1.4 / 1.6 and (2.0 ST only) Duratec engines.

Also diesel versions with a Duratorq engine.

Hope that helps.

If its any help I'm a "mature" driver (jeez, that makes me feel old) and I've just bought the 60PS Duratec 1250 on a 10 plate - mainly because it was the newest car I could get for the money available. Being a bit of an old nutter, I thought I was going to feel my age looking at the specs. However, while its never (ever) going to be termed a hot hatch, 0-60 is timed at an average of 13.3 seconds, top end (indicated) around 104. So in reality its performing more like the 82PS version should on paper.
Long and short is if you go for the low(er) power option, don't tell your mates, theres not a lot of difference in performance unless you're running it down the strip (or round the local multi-storey), and the insurance will be cheaper while you build up your NCD.
Your call, but I'm quite happy with it (and I used to run a 2L Mondeo, and an overbored Kawasaki 750turbo)....

Hi :) first of all welcome to the forum.

I, like you passed my test recently and I was looking at different cars from different makes etc to see what would be the best for me. Now insurance is going to shoot you in the foot no matter what car you get is, it's stupid because so many young drivers are sensible but so many are stupid and thing that racing and crashing is fun...

As Powellct said just get the lower option, there isn't going to be a massive difference in performance and no one will know, only you and the insurance company. The Fiesta Mk6 is a great car, and I did look as the 1.25L engine, but due to money it wasn't feasible. I drive a MK3 fiesta 1.3L and it's great, it has it's problems but it is a great car...the only down point is that the insurance costed 4X's what the car is worth :(

Personally the option I'd go for is the 1.25L, the Mk6 is a nice drive and very easy to maintain, my mum has one and everything is very easily assessable. If you want to get into cars as well this would be a great option. This car is also very easily modded and even without touching the outside of the car the inside can be made to look nice (eg Wrapping the center console)

At the end of the day it is up to you what you get out of the two but if the smaller engine will be cheaper to buy and then insure then I would opt for that, it's kinda a no brainer.

Good luck and keep us posted :)

I'm not sure whether it would be against the rules to advise on insurance companies but I found the ones not on comparison websites are the best, the more... Direct ones ;)

Also consider a KA. I bought one for my daughter last year - smashing (if basic) little motor - it'll do her to build up NCD.

A word about insurance from an ex-technician/workshop foreman/area transport manager (I did the full 5 years at college) - I read and hear a lot about "pah, £5grand insurance for an £800 car, rip off". Now imagine you hit and kill a 30 year old stockbroker and his family sue you for loss of earnings for his career. Your £800 car has now caused (35years x £150000+ per year) at least £5M worth of damage. So they're not insuring the risk of the car being stolen, or total loss - they're insuring the risk of the damage you do to other people - and sadly a lot of youngsters are high risk. I know, I was one, and I was.
