Although for now any fitting of parts is pretty much on hold i have started gathering parts for my next big mod HID xenon headlamps retrofit with self leveling and washers.

 

I got the most expensive and difficult to source parts today for a whopping deal less than half the regular ebay prices.

 

Front ST bumper with holes for jet washers

 

 

 

HID Xenon headlights

 

 

Sadly these headlights are not adaptive for cornering that would have been a big bonus, can't ask too much now!

 

Got all ballast and bulbs it's literally as it is right now a straight plug and play. 

 

Next parts needed to complete this mod are much easier and cheaper to source

 

Washer jets + hose and pump

 

Washer bottle with 3 outlets and 2 pumps

 

Self leveling sensors

Take it you have a 10 pin plug? I've only got the 7 and I wanna know what the wiring mod is that you can do for the leveling to make it manual. Any idea?

Yeah I do have a 10 pin plug plus wiring for front and rear sensor and washer bottle low fluid sensor with wiring for headlight washer motor pump. I have checked it all.

For the washer system it can be done without any wiring already on the car, the leveling system can also be done by adding some additional wiring but you'd have to some how make it all connect to varies plugs it will require a different switch aswell.

Don't know all details off the top of my head I would have to check the wiring schematics.

You cannot manually level xenons the motors are different to manual leveling plug they only work on input from the sensor I dont think its possible to make it manual

I was reading on someone's thread on a separate forum, that they added the 3 extra pins in and then piggybacked off of other wires and they managed to get the manual levelers to work on their Xenons

I have no ideas on that tbh since when its automated sigbal comes from the sensor and not the switch I don't know how it could be done from the switch although thinking about it... it sort of make some sense

The way I see it is that, the sensor is theoretically bypassed and swapped with the levelling module switch? If that makes sense :p

I'll post one tomorrow, as I'm on my phone! There's also a YouTube video on how to retrofit genuine Xenons, but he doesn't explain how it's done, he just shows you him putting them in the car

Yes this does make sense... alot more sense actually. When using xenons with leveling sensors the elmconfig is used to switch xenon mode on. This would result in the headlight motors taking signal from the sensors, but with that mode off the car will operate as if its halogen manual headlight, in theory its possible to feed the signal from the switch to operate the xenon motors

The wiring schenatics will tell what is what I will take a look at it tomo and see what I can work out

Cheers pal. I guess we just need to work out which wires operate the manual leveling! Id imagine the third wire that gets added in is an earth to make the Xenons work (even though you can just earth the ballast to the chassis).

Yes one is an earth and the other two may just be up and down signal just guessing though the system should be more complex than that a dc motor does not need 3 wires for moving

My guess is:

theres 3 wires because of the way the xenon works.

Contantly leveling while the engine is running.

So my theroy is that third wire is an ignition positive feed which alows the leveling system to become active via its positive and negative.

Had a look at the wiring schematics and it is possible but really more info is needed, let me explain.

There is 3 different wiring for headlamps (ignoring daytime running light, focus don't have them)

1. The standard 7 pin for halogen

2. 10 pin for AFS/ adaptive lighting

3. HID/xenon

Wiring for halogen is simple and needs no control modules whilst wiring for xenons or adaptive lights needs a control module, the control module may or may not be the same thing on factory xenon cars or factory adaptive lighting cars (one is called afs module and the other is hid module)

Wiring for adaptive lighting is exactly the same as xenons minus the xenons sensor wiring at the suspension, however on adaptive lighting there is an additional dc motor for vertical leveling that is manually done, xenons don't have this.

The other motor is a dc stepper motor used for vertical leveling on xenons and used for horizontal movement on adaptive lights.

With adaptive lighting the control module has a feed from the module to the dc motor that manually levels, its possible to send this feed to the stepper motor but I would strongly advice not to do so it could possibly damage the stepper motor or headlamp.

The other possible way is the guy who done this mod isn't actually using xenon headlamps and could be using adaptive headlamps with retrofitted hid. Adaptive headlamps use projector style lens just like xenon lens and they can be fitted with after market hid to look like xenons, in this case manual leveling would work from the switch as usual, I think this is a much easier and less complicated way of having manual leveling with xenons.

Doing it like this with a 7 pin connector will work by taking the feed from the switch that does manual leveling for halogen and connecting it to the positive feed on the connector for manual vertical leveling of adaptive headlamps

My conclusion is that more info is needed on what type of headlamps he's using

The extra 3 wires goes as such

1 extra ground for xenon burner

1 positive from the control module to motor electromagnet

1 negative from electromagnet to control module

7 pin goes as such

1 high beam

1 low beam

1 side lights

1 indicator

1 for grounding halogen bulbs(all the above)

1 positive for manual leveling motor (used for dc stepper motor)

1 negative for nanual leveling motor (used for dc stepper motor)

Just finished reading through the thread, loving it.. looks nice and love all the mods.

Im curious to know how you went about retrofitting the rain sensor and auto headlights?

This is something i miss having from a previous car. Is it involved? Will i need to have an upgraded loom or can it be done reasonably simply? Also, auto lights im assuming are what they say on the tin,. they will switch off when the cars off? and switch on when you turn it on, without having to turn the switch on and off?

Hello matt, I wouldn't say it's very involved if you have the correct information, I went through 2 sensors and a mirror before getting it done correctly and that was a cost of around £50 each time.

The rain sensor for auto wipers is combined with the light sensors, you will need a new switch with an "auto" function on it, when in auto mode lights come on and off depending of amount of light detected by the light sensor.

Position 1 for the wiper stalk is auto mode and that works with rain water sensed it all turns off when the ignition is off.

Here are the items needed.

1 rain sensor with light sensor plus rear view mirror, the rear view mirror is different and must be adapted to fit the standard mirror mount stuck onto the wibdscreen (adapting went bad for me so I went about it differently)

1 light switch with auto mode

First step is working out if your car already has the wiring. The wiring is glued onto the head liner under the interior light if you have this then its alot essier, without this wiring you will need a new loom they pop up on eBay every now and then again

So basically, there is only one sensor and it controls both the wipers and the lights? I've had a quick look on eBay, and there are a couple of set ups for sale which include the auto mirror/sensor/sensor mount etc..

Then its just a case of plug and play? change the light switch, plug the new one in, plug the sensor/mirror in and activate it through elmconfig? You dont have to add wires to the auto lights switch or anything?

Auto dimming mirror is or was a factory option on its own this mirror uses the same mount as the basic mirror, auto wipers was also available separately, get a mirror that has auto dimming with lights and wiper sensor, the mirror with auto dim + wipers and lights uses a different mount, a round type mount.

I found this easier than modifying the mirror, doing that cost me a mirror doing it wrong.

Adding of wires should not be needed everything should be there at the light switch and roof lining, only one person on here needed to add an extra wiring but his car is not a right handed uk model.

Once all done it will need activation on elmconfig, auto lights and auto wipers are activated separately.

Just one more question, I notice in the windscreen posted above, there is a opening for the sensor, Is there an opening for the sensor on our glass? or do you have to mount the sensor lower down so it isn't covered by the black stuff?
