Turbo Lag In First Gear

I just bought a 1.8 tdci S Max 2007. When pulling away in first gear there seems to be a lack of acceleration compared with second gear. When in second you can hear the turbo kick in, even when the revs are lower than when in first gear! As I will be towing (just had a tow bar fitted by Fords) I want the maximum power from it. Is this a common fault or normal please?
