I cannot stand the idea! Its bad enough (certainly around Kent!) when you have the inappropriate roads, and have the odd disabled driver (who has the right to park there) and the chaos it causes... Then having the odd lazy so and so (or four!) parking on the double yellow's because the cant be bothered to park around the corner and walk about 30 yards... That causes chaos around our way...

I cant think of anything worse, than written consent for people to do this...

If they want to entice people to the high street, force the councils to offer free parking for the first half hour, and then charge after that... Otherwise its an increased risk to pedestrians (who need to cross the road between speeding cars trying to overtake / pass the obstructive driver) drivers (who try to get there quickly and then crash) and it will just add delays to EVERYWHERE you go...

I heard the folk on the radio this morning say "it cant get any worse, people already do this...", yes they do, and these are the people who think "I'm brave - I wont get a ticket" or "I don't care if I get a ticket" or finally "ooooh shiny yellow lines - isn't that what a parking bay looks like?" but now if you tell everyone "go - park there, you will be fine for 15 minutes" I cant imagine any particular stretch being left clear...

Also, how do you then restrict the parking on a corner, or in line with a junction? will that still stand? or are we going to need blue lines that allow you to park (to replace double yellows) and leave double yellows to say "you cant park here, its a junction"...

I vote yes to 80mph speed limits - everyone's moving, and there's MORE than enough space for people to do this safely.... But when your talking about "just dump your car on a double yellow - its fine" - where there is no no real space to park, and less space to manoeuvrings around the streets (all will be reduced to in essence one way traffic) then I really cant see it working....

What about emergency vehicles on a run, they will get slowed down, and maybe someone will die because of this. Let's see what reply this statement gets.

Im completely against this - double yellow parkers cause enough problems as it is!

I do think some city centers go to extremes with the double Yellow lines though. Personally I think they should review where theyve got them and remove the ones that are surplus to requirements. This would save any confusion. I also agree with the 80mph speed limit on a motorway only not on dual carriageways though

Its absolutely ridiculous, double yellow lines are there for a purpose. To stop roads being blocked, to make it safe for pedestrians to cross roads, to ease congestion by not having obstructions,,,,,, the list is endless. Doing this just defeats the object of having them, and you can gaurantee the rule will be abused. give people and inch and they take a mile.

I am registered as disabled and have the blue badge. I get really wound up by other disabled drivers who think the badge gives them the right to park anywhere they want. They make roads too narrow, they block sloped kerbs, etc. I do my best not to cause any inconvenience to other people and in most cases, I end up parking in normal car parks and then walk further, it just means i get away with not having to pay to park.

For example, anyone who has visitted whitby will know the trouble the selffish disabled people cause, by parking on bends and narrow roads.

This rule is going to just ging to increase the problem many times. You can gaurantee everyone wll be parking on double yellows and cause major blockages on the roads. Also the traffic wardens are so few so unable to be everywhere at once, so these 15 mins will end up being an hour or more, or more traffic wardens will be employed which will end up costing taxpayers even more.

Thankfully I dont go into london or any major cities, but I really dread to think the effect this will have when the roads are already congested without having cars parked on double yellows.

The government seem to have to change things for the sake of changing them, without thinking the effect they will have in the real world. They should do trials in their own towns or villages and see how they like it when the roads are blocked or congested.

P.S. for years the government have tried to get cars out of major towns and cities and pushed to get people onto public transport. If they do this people will think sod the buses I can park right outside the shop and get what i want instead.

As a blue badge holder, I think it's ridiculous that it should be allowed, I don't even do it myself, even though I could do for a limited amount of time, I have enough trouble parking in the disabled parking spaces at my local supermarket car park as the cashpoint cripples think it's aright to park in them to use the cash machines, imagine what it'll be like if they can park on the double yellows to use the high street machines, utter chaos.

As has been previously stated it's the councils and their over priced car parks and business rates that need looking at if you want to entice more shops and shoppers into the town centres and away from the large retail parks such as Meadowhall, the Trafford centre and others

Flamin' dumb idea.

The amount of time I've been held up on a blue light call because some inconsiderate lazy goit has decided that they would rather park on yellows and block the road to get to a shop rather than use a parking space a few feet down.

I agree that excessive use of yellows where the only reason is to push people into paid car parks or bays and nothing to do with maintaining traffic flow or safety is rife, ever since it was de-criminalised and handed to local authorities to control/fine it's been rediculous beyond belief.

Has anyone seen any single yellow lines recently?

Remember that lines must be continuous, undamaged (badly damaged or worn lines can be considered obsolete by abandonment), and have the correct signage and termination lines (T bars) as per Traffic Signs Regulations & General Directions 2002, part II, Paragraph 22, [http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2002/3113/schedule/19/paragraph/22/made] (also covered by the traffic signs, regulations and general directions 2005) this also includes T bars on the kerbs so as to allow visibility in the case of obscuration by leaves/snow/standing water etc.

If these are not correct then the lines are non-enforceable and can usually be sucsessfully contested (but not guaranteed).

It's already bad enough trying to park in Croydon where I live, double yellow lines are an absolute must in certain areas.

The council down here introduced 30mins free parking in a few places, but like Jeebo said this should be widespread near or around high streets. Removal of DYL won't get past legislation hopefully.

whoever came up with this idear is not on the same planet, i agree with all the posts, my other bugbear is when a blue badge holder(not all of them) parks on double yellow lines or in a disabled space and their able body partner goes off shopping and they sit in the car!!

Not taking anything away from disabled drivers but why do some park on yellows and display their badges when often there is an empty parking space literally 5 feet away.

There is one that parks outside my house (resident permit area) on the yellows that are either end of the permit area and often within about 3 feet of a corner/mini roundabout.

The amount of times I've come around the corner and had to veer out to avoid their car, very dangerous place to park IMHO.

I agree its annoying when they do that. In fact its against the rules of the blue badge and they could have the badge taken off them for it.

It is for the purpose of the disabled person only. according to the rules the disabled person "must" leave the vehicle, even if they are only stood by the side of the car while the able bodied person goes to the shop.

I must say that around the corner from me is a disabled chap on the main road. The road is wide, and he parks on his double yellow line immediately outside his house, which is AFTER the parking space.

He does this as his badge gives him consent to do so, the road is wide enough and safe enough for him to obstruct this minor amount of double yellow, but as parking is limited around here, he does it as a courtesy to other motorists.

Why this particular patch of road has double yellow's for that very short range is beyond me, the road is rather wide, and doesnt even seem to need the double yellows as even when he parks there, you wouldnt realise it anyway!

The blue badge only allows up to 3 hours parking on double yellows, so id have thought he would apply to the council for a disabled marked bay outside his house.

Im sure the council have a map of the area on the wall ad play darts to decide which has double yellow and which doesnt
