How Can I Wire Permanent Phone Charger?

Hi all,

I was thinking of hard wiring my phone in to the dash so that I don't have to have wires all over the car when charging, and to free up the 12v socket for other things.

However, I don't know a great deal about electrics!

I've found a kit that provides a harness with the phone usb connection followed by a transformer to convert the 12v feed in to a 5v 1amp feed and then an in line fuse holder.

So I think that takes care of everything I need, just leaving me with a positive and negative wire to splice in to the car somewhere.

First question would be, have I overlooked anything so far?

Then second question is where can I splice in to?

The 12v socket is inside the arm rest on my car, so that's out. Someone suggested that I could I use the hazard light switch because that is near by and always live. But then I thought, if I splice the positive and negative on the switch, wouldn't I be creating a new circuit bypassing the switch and causing the hazards to go mental?

So if anyone can offer me any help with this, that would be great. I'm not going to do it unless I'm confident that I completely understand everything involved.

Thanks guys

Regarding the hazard switch if you splice the postive feed running to the hazard switch then the hazard light circuit after the switch will remain unchanged and will still require pushing of the switch to activate!

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. If I do that, where do I put the negative from my phone?

In assumed if I spliced the positive on the hazards, then the negative would go to the negative from the hazards too?

Thanks

Run a second connection from the rear of the existing socket.

I can make you a piggyback connector if you like so you can run a feed wire to wherever you want the phone positioned.

If you're interested then P/M me and we'll sort out the arrangements.

Btw, no charge.

I usually use the back of the radio for both positive and negative feeds, I tend to go for the ignition controlled positive, and that way there's no chance of accidentally draining my battery if I forget to unplug something

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies, I've been away for a few days so couldn't post on here.

I'm still undecided on this really. The radio has so many wires involved that I'd be worried about getting it wrong. Where as the power socket would be easier to wire, because it is in the arm rest it would require taking a lot more trim apart to get to it.

These are the wiring instructions:

Route the power cable from the charger unit to the power supply source in the vehicle and connect as follows: 1. Connect the White wire to a Negative Ground connection of the vehicle or the vehicle chassis. 2. Connect the Red wire to a 12/24 Volt power supply in the vehicle that is controlled by the ignition switch of the vehicle.

Any other tips or suggestions to help me on my way?

Thanks again to those who have already replied.

The easiest wire to connect to would be the ignition live wire on the back of the radio loom-

Hi,

Great reply, thanks!

A couple of questions then:

1.) I have the Sony DAB single slot CD player unit, is the wiring diagram above correct?

2.) I see the ignition live, where would I put the negative from my phone charger? Would it be the one labelled "EARTH" just to the right of the ignition live?

3.) Is it OK to use scotch lock quick splice connectors to join the wires?

Thanks again for all of the help.

As long as you have the Quadlock as in the photo then the wiring diagram will be correct.

I'd earth direct to a screw or bolt on the car chassis or panel to avoid the risk of interference on the radio and also avoid a risk of any power surges feeding back to the radio.

I use scotchlocks quite happily but some don't like them, a better way tbh is to solder or crimp them.

OK thanks, I'll start getting the bits together to do this I think.

I think I'll be able to do it, if I get stuck will you help me out if I post photos up?

Im wanting to do this and feed a USB slot into the top dash storage compartment. Did you get this sorted?

Hi,

Yes I fitted a second 12v socket behind the dash and then used a dual USB cigarette charger to run one to the top storage unit for satnav and one pops out just by the passenger heated seat switch for my phone cradle.

Its all quite easy using the 12v socket at the bottom of the console, radio comes out easily, plastic fascia feels like it will break but it wont , just go easy.

Its so much more convenient .

Hi, I want to do something like this, but the other way around. Basically on the Mk2 the 12V socket is at the bottom of the centre console and I want to put an extension into the back of the car for the kids to plug in their gadgets on long drives. I thought I could put in a normal 12V power and a USB socket side by side in the back of the centre arm rest - like I have drawn on the picture.

I thought I would take the power by piggy backing on the existing 12V supply and run the wire behind the trim in the arm rest. I have checked and there seems to be enough room behind where I have drawn the circles above the little storage compartment door.

I was looking at buying something like this - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dual-Car-Cigarette-Lighter-Socket-Splitter-12V-Charger-USB-Power-Adapter-/301267479790?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4624f0ecee but with just the holes poking through the trim. Anyone able to recommend a good source or trsuted ebay seller? It would be nice to have the USB bit looking a bit like this by the end, flush with thetrim - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1x-Mini-USB-Dual-Port-Twin-12V-Universal-In-Car-Socket-Lighter-Charger-Adapter-/331179031458?pt=UK_MobilePhones_MobilePhoneAccessories_MobilePhoneChargers&hash=item4d1bcefba2

That twin socket would do the trick nicely.

It's easy to splice off the original socket, the wires are easily reached by removing the lower panel by the clutch pedal.

It's one torx screw under the pop out cover qnd the panel has a couple of hook tabs that hold it flush with the centre console.

The wiring will easily tuck under the side of the console, as long as the wiring is run down the right hand side you will be able to avoid the gear linkages and handbrake with no problems.

You can remove the two screws under the rear storage unit to allow for a bit of play to lift the rear of the console slightly to allow easier positioning of the wiring.

Not sure if fitting the sockets behind the plastic will look tidy unless you're very handy with tools.

Definitely a worthy project and an innovative concept.

I look forward to seeing your progress.

Thanks, that will give me the confidence to take off a few bits of trim at the weekend to get a better idea of things. Then I need to order the stuff off eBay - any recommended sellers out there, UK if possible so I don't have to wait an age for it to come in (not that I've had any problems ordering from China everything has turned up eventually)?

Tbh, there doesn't seem to be any UK sellers of those sockets.

There are a couple listed as UK but the traders name and delivery time quoted gives the game away that they aren't UK based.

Just a thought, make sure you have adequate space in the rear of the console to fit the sockets plus wiring connectors as they do look a bit deep.
