Hi guys and girls,

I am having a few problems understanding offset... Can you help??

I am currently running 19" x 8.5" Focus RS alloys with an ET of 60? with 15mm spacers.

I want a set of 20" x 9" alloys with an ET of 45... Will they fit straight on without the need for spacers??

Thanks in advance.

Tom

Right Offset or ET, the lower the number the further sticking out your wheels are, so at the moment you have an et of 60 then 15mm spacers so as a package fitted its like your wheels having an et of 45,this is worked out as the centre of the width of the wheel would be zero then the distance in mm the mounting surface of the wheel is away from the centre line is the et, yours have an et of 60 so are pushed in to the car 60mm but then you had 15mm spacers on bring your wheels back 15mm so end with an et of 45. but then we have to look at the wheel width so you are going from 8.5" to 9" so your new wheel is wider by roughly 12mm, so thats 6mm more sticking out and 6mm more coming in, as the 12mm would be equally split. so the new wheel would stick out an extra 6mm than you old wheel but you would have 6mm less clearance on the inside of your wheel to your inner arch, suspension etc. you wolud have to check the extra diameter of the rim would also clear any suspension parts then also theirs your tyres. look at this below hope this helps.

Ok... so if I get some staggered 20" alloys... what tyres do I need.

Looking at fronts 8.5", Rears 9". Want rolling ratios to be same.

Ta.

Are you a Mag or a Mackem :P

http://www.kouki.co.uk/utilities/visual-tyre-size-calculator

the speed difference from 30 and 60mph is the wrong way around so take no notice, rule of thumb is max 5% in speedo error.

PMSL what wheel tyre combo were you running before, if you input that into the second link and then you can play about with tyre sizes till overall diameter comes up the same, I would put same tyre width front and rear as the extra 12mm across only equates to 6mm of stretch compared to the fronts, or if you want wider rears you will have to go lower on your side wall profile as tyre sizes are worked out by lets say. 225/40/19, so they would fit a 19" rim they are 225mm wide and the sidewall height is 40% of the 225mm. so if you put wider tyres on the back but keep the side wall at 40, the sidewall would be larger slightly giving a greater diameter and slightly larger looking tyres so have a play with the calculator.

have you decided what size tyre yet, and dont forget to put pics up, I want to see if you hit the nail on the head and got the stance right.
