And also past a mobile unit doing 43 in a 40?? I tend to go by my sat nav as i know my speedo is out a bit?? Considering i have 9 months left untill i have completed 2 years driving would i have lost my licence and how long do i have to feel guilty and nervous for ?? How long does a ticket take to come through ?? Gutted never speed normally :(

From what you have said..no..I wouldn't worry.

I drive to my Sat nav speed because speedometers are themselves calibrated using gps and have never had a problem.

I believe you are allowed ten percent plus two so correct me if I'm wrong you won't have a problem unless you are driving at 46+ in a forty.

The law is of course anything over 40 but accuracy of speed checking devices allows some leeway.

I'd not even bother crossing fingers unless I was driving at 90 in a 40 or something!

But seriously I understand the worry feeling as a professional driver myself but I've had times where I was sure I was going too fast but wasn't after all!

I can't add much to what has already been said but it is my understanding that you will first receive a Notice of Intended Prosecution which you must receive within FOURTEEN DAYS of the offence being committed should the police decide to prosecute. Having said that I very much doubt that you will be prosecuted for such a small excess speed!

Cheers m8 14 days to wait, still any offence is an offence so im not expecting to be let off just hoping i have a licence still

Seriously??? I'd be amazed if you got a ticket for being less than 10% over the limit. Remember - your cars speedo is over calibrated as it is required to be by law. If it says you're doing 43, you're probably doing more like 39/40. If you go by your satnav then you are a loser for driving round with a satnav on all the time ;) dont flap!

I know the feeling! I thought I got caught speeding by a roadside police officer on the motorway last month and it took me 3 weeks of not getting nervous every time I saw something come in the post that looked official. Nothing ever came thank god!

As the above posters have said our speedo is out by a few mph as well as the police giving leeway when recording your speed. I usually travel at 105km/h on my speedo which I think in reality works out to be 101km/h and have never been caught. In the above indecent I think i was doing about 108km/h.

So dont fret you should be fine, but if worst comes to worst usually if it is your first offence write an appologetic letter and they should let you off with a caution - or thats how it works here at least

Cheers guys feel a lot better now :) and yh i know the roads like the back of my hand travel nearly every week up there but have the sat nav on for any road works and crashes so i dont get caught up in traffic plus cameras lol

Happy now :) and i dont think our police force would accept a letter but good try :)

Definitive answer-

The leeway is 10%, we used to also allow a couple of mph extra but that has been stopped.

An Officer in a Provida fitted vehicle is more likely to be flexible than a roadside Gatso camera, mobile camera van or average speed zones which are strictly 10%.

Any speed over 30% of the posted limits can be put to a court for considereration of a ban.

If I'm dealing with someone for a speed related offence I take driving style, age, experience and road conditions into consideration- roadside cameras do not.

Yes.

Applying the 10% inaccuracy you were actually going slower than the posted speed.

Sunday driver ;)

Useful information Stoney871, when you watch tv programmes like motorway cops ect, seems like you have to be doing crazy speeds before anything serious happens, the last one I watched the police where behind some clowns doing 90mph on leeds ring road (50 limit) but didnt have time to do an average speed check before traffic slowrd the car down an they pulled them over so they got away with the offence

The Provida system on patrol cars needs calibrating at a set speed for a confirmed distance before it can be used for evidentiary readings.

Just going by the patrol cars standard speedo is not acceptable as evidence.

It is annoying and frustrating at times but we must abide by the law and provide firm evidence.

Tbh if you can't get them for speeding then there is always reckless/dangerous driving and failing to stop. :d

I work a Malinois patrol dog and a Springer Spaniel Specialist Search dog.

This means I'm a busy boy but the job is very rewarding.

Everyone should have at least one speeding ticket as a right of passage, but camara's don't count. You have to be stopped by a traffic car with blues and twos to qualify. Really teaches you a lesson to be honest and much more observant.

All good words from the gang. In fact your tomtom is a very accurate speedometer - it has to be, otherwise it doesn't know where you are.

And what infuriates me is these do-gooder LED roadside speed indicators that have been set up to match over-reading speedos. They flash up that you're doing 34 mph when you know you're doing 30 ( tomtom says so). Of course all the other numpties drive by

feeling guilty doing 26 mph.
