darthbabo
Hi I am so glad to see more of these gems still on the road and tears my heart out after having owned two knowing i won't find another, as both of mine were stolen one after the other :( here are some pics of the lovely ladies i miss: I still have a shed load of parts for these including a few specific to the 1.6 diesel if anybody is interested
nudge
Thats a shame with both of them stolen. I've just done a check on both cars and it's not good for the 5door as there isn't a trace of it anymore, The Estate is still showing but hasn't been on the road since 2008. darthbabo
both were written off by being burnt out the same night as being stolen I should have mentioned that sorry :( the end result is i'm stuck with parts for a car i can't get my hands on :(
nudge
Being stolen is bad but both being burnt out is tragic. The Estate must be still around as its showing on DVLA i wonder if its in a scrap yard.
darthbabo
that is odd it should have been crushed a long time ago i have photo's of it at the yard of the salvage comapny that recovered it at the time incidentally it was classed as a CAT A :/

Combi Doug
Nice to see some more activity here! Firstly, Joey, sorry for such a late reply to your post! I never got a forum notification (or it maybe went into my email spam folder). In answer to your question, I believe the car was under a car cover for a short time, but the previous owner said he regretted not having replaced it when it disintigrated. Amazingly the car had suffered very little during that time. The paintwork just needed a couple of good washes and waxes. The window weather strips (as per my earlier pics) were the worst affected. Other than that, the nearside corner of the dash is slightly sun faded, but nothing that a bit of trim restorer wouldn't sort out I guess. The underside of the car has light surface rust, but that is all, and the engine compartment could do with a good clean (I think quite a few spiders made their homes in there, during the car's period of inactivity!) I think having been away from the salty environment of the coast, and having been stored on hard surfaces helped save it from rotting away! Darthbabo, wow, what such tragic ends to two lovely cars! You were unlucky, and someone must get a kick out of joyriding and torching 1.6D Escorts! Note to self... don't park my Escort in Darthbabo's street! Lol Seriously though, I feel for you. The saloon in particular looked absolutely immaculate. Did that come before or after the estate? What was the mileage on it? (Can't remember if you mentioned it, but I don't want to go back a page and risk losing what I've now typed! Lol) If you are after getting another at all, I'll keep an eye out. I've seen two Mk4 1.6Ds within the past 12 months for sale. One was a red estate the same as yours, which was in need of some tidying, but was on the road. It eventually sold, was 'tarted up' with a polish, wheel trims and such like, and then later put back up for sale. The other one I was very tempted to myself. It was also red, but a saloon (my preferred choice). That looked quite up together, other than needing a repair to a rear wheel arch. Out of interest, what spares do you have? Having two 1.6Ds (a Mk2 Fiesta being the other) I have been collecting some items, such as injectors and water pump etc. I shall put some more pics up, when I have a bit more time. Doug Hi Doug the blue one came after the red one and was a genuine 46,000 mile vehicle when I bought her and she needed a little work to put on the road (arches ect), but she didn't have the history that the red one had as there was a combined ten years ownership between my and my father with her not to mention even as a 1.6 D her engine sound was very unique, total spent on the two is close to £6000 in parts and body work. While I would love another 1.6 D I have to be realistic and say the chances of me affording one after seeing the pricing on that red estate you mentioned during her initial listing (c plate right?) are going to be slim to no chance with them gaining in value. ironically that was the first one I'd seen for sale in six years. The parts I have are too many to list in totality but some specific items I have are as follows: 1.6 Diesel specific water hose almost new and not perished (fitted to the red estate only a matter of weeks before she was stolen and burnt out) 1.6 Diesel specific Vacum Pump brand new and in box 1.6 Diesel specific Vacum Pump used but kept in storage X2 Ford Five speed box Used but kept in storage Ford Escort Gear Box Brace specific to the MK IV Ford Escort MK IV 1.6 D specific exhaust front section genuine Ford Motorcraft Ford Escort MK IV Bonnet used but kept in storage Ford Escort MK IV Front Wings New and unused good quality aftermarket pannels Ford Escort MK IV battery Tray good quality aftermarket part Ford Escort Windscreen with interior mirror fitted and un-perished rubber Ford Escort Front Door Windows MK IV Ford Escort Rear Door Windows MK IV Ford Radio's Mixed lot MK IV/V coded radios ready for use Ford full set of locks on one key X2 Ford Escort MK IV diesel speedo's one needs the circuit film replaced but otherwise works For Escort MK IV Wing Mirror Covers genuine parts job lot Ford Escort MK IV Wheel trims unique to the L model genuine ford parts new and unfitted Ford Escort MK IV Wheel trims unique to the L model genuine ford parts used but passable The list is only what I can remember I have other mechanical, trim parts that I can't remember about
Combi Doug
Well the two cars were a credit to you. Would love to have heard the engine sound that you mention was unique to yours. Back in the day, when 1.6Ds were an every day sight, I could always differentiate between the sound of 1.6D saloons and estates, without seeing them, through the slight difference in their exhaust notes! The vans tended to sound closer to that of the saloons. I still have a tape recording (from about 27 years ago!!) of the engine sound of our 1.6D Combi van being started up by me, and backed out of our drive. I'll have to find it and then find a way of putting it onto the computer, so that fellow 1.6D aficionados can have a listen! Lol Regarding the prices and the red estate (yes, you saw the same one advertised I see), I don't know whether you followed that ad or not, but the price steadily came down (was it something like £1900 originally?). I think it went for something like £500 - £600 in the end? I paid a little over the odds for mine, because of its mileage, condition, and its reg number. I'll keep an eye out for you in any case, and if I see one come up at a 'sensible' price, I'll give you the nod. Thanks for putting the list up of parts. I may well be interested in some of those, in particular the 1.6D specific bits. Have just collected my estate from its storage facility, and dropped it off to my local garage overnight, for them to MOT first thing tomorrow. If anything happens to the garage overnight, I'll know that these blessesd vehicles are cursed, and are destined to become extinct! Lol Just to continue the theme of 'unfortunate' 1.6Ds, I'll finish this post with some pics of our poor 1986 Combi 1.6D Popular (as mentioned above). These were taken when the van was written off, after losing an 'argument' with a taxi, in the hands of my workmate's girlfriend one evening. This would have been when the van was not even 4 years old. :-( Future pics of mine will be happier 1.6D ones, I promise! [Hope they come out ok. Photobucket and my computer don't really seem to get on!]
darthbabo
Really that low? couldn't have gone for it as my pc had decided around then that I needed new peripherals and a backup mouse decided to blow my board costing me in total £480 (running this thing is expensive lol). Ouch it really didn't win that fight and only 4 years old at the time? >.< my sympathies. I do have audio recordings somewhere of the engine running from both inside and outside the car if i can remember where they were stored >.< fingers crossed your car passes it's test would be nice to know that another one is running the roads :) I'm waiting to find out how much money I've got coming my way at the end of the month which will enable me to look for another car so i can't really say what my price range will be yet but I may end up going for something like an 07 Fiesta 1.6TDCI if I can't find one (Escort lol) when I'm ready as those things are only £30 a year tax Incidentally I Just remembered something the red estate or as i still call her KDF was actually at the Donnington ford meet in 2008 if anybody went parked in the carpark at the time but she drew a lot of attention lol as they tend to Edited November 11, 2014 by darthbabo
darthbabo
Unfortunately after Juggling figures I've come to a decision if either of you guys are interested I am offering the entire lot of parts up for £500, they are worth more than that if I sell them separately but I simply don't have the time PM me are interested in having them. Combi Doug
Thanks for giving us first refusal. Tempting, but I would have a problem trying to store everything. Re the MOT, it flew through, with no advisories. Yay! Always a bit of a worry, the first MOT with a vehicle that is 'new' to one, so a bit of a relief! I'm a bit pee'd off though, as I know rodents have been under the bonnets of both my Escort and Fiesta, in their storage place. Whilst I can't see any signs of chomped wiring, the pre-heat in my Escort has suddenly packed up. Not checked fully, but I think too much of a coincidence for the glow plugs to suddenly stop working. Grrr! Will have to do some investigating, and also put a cat in there! Lol Doug
darthbabo
Glad to hear It passed :) hopefully the solution to the pre-heat is simple electrics are never fun lol. It's a shame you can't have all the parts however if you want them I can offer the diesel specific parts; the water hose, vac pumps, exhaust front pipe and speedo's for £160 I'll even throw in a fuel tank I have lying around collecting dust and both Haynes manuals I have, one of which is specifically about the 1.6 and 1.8 diesel engines. Combi Doug
Thanks for putting those sound clips up. Always great to hear that familiar 1.6D sound. Sad though, that your cars met with such a terrible end! I did a walkaround video of my estate a few weeks ago, which I will upload when I get a chance. You can then get to hear some up to date 1.6D engine noise! I shall also dig out the tape recording I mentioned in an earlier post, of the 1.6D Combi, from around 1987. It's been many years since I last listened to that. It'll be strange hearing the sound of a vehicle that's been 'dead' for around a quarter of a century! Re the 1.6D specific parts. Thanks for that. I may well get back to you on them, though if you can sell everything in the meantime, then please don't hold on to them just for me. I'm just thinking of putting my Fiesta 1.6D back on the road. She's been on SORN for nearly 10 months, and I'm missing driving her! Doug

Doug Awesome I look forward to seeing and hearing the the clips when you upload them incidentally the server I used is perfect for to upload the audio once you've digitized the recording, I know what you mean about it being strange about hearing a sound that has been dead for years when I listened to them it hit me after not hearing that engine for so long. Don't worry about the parts since they are unique lol I'll hold them for you if you want them, as for the other bits I'm not worried lol they'll sell but it's getting around to it as part of the reason it's taken so long is sentimentality and the other part is probably not wanting to admit I'll not have another one either that or I'm just lazy lol but they've all got to go.
