Hi Nigel,

Just spotted your post, after Googling 'Escort 1.6D' !

I'd forgotten I was even a member on here, and I think this is my first post (I will find out in a minute!)

Anyway, I have just bought an Escort 1.6D, although for me this is a nostalgic return to the marque!

I will post more on my car, and I will go and introduce myself too, in the appropriate place in due course.

At least you need not feel alone with your 1.6D now!

:edit: Ah I remember now, I advertised one of my cars on here a while back, and I'd meant to put some pics up of other Fords I'd owned, but I don't think I ever got around to it!. Glad I've found this site again! Lol

I was wondering that this car was the only one in the country.

I would like to see some pictures.

Unfortunately my Escorts body work is getting a bit tired but mechanically it run and starts every day having covered 220k miles

Don't see many of those around now. It's quite an achievement to keep an old Ford that had covered that many miles on the road. Doesn't look as though it has done that many miles.

If you want to see exactly how rare it is have a look on howmanyleft.co.uk

Noticed the bit of carpet underneath, leaking oil is it?

There used to be an oil leak its been sorted now.

My hat goes off to any body that looks after there motors.

I've always been into Ford I've owned many from Fiestas to st24s, i'm also into mk2 Rovers only because of British heritage

I will sort some pictures.

My car is the same colour as yours, but an estate.

1.6 diesels are indeed very rare nowadays, and even the 1.8 diesels are becoming few and far between in the Mk4s. Funny remembering back, when these cars were almost on every street corner!

The only 1.6 D I have ever seen in recent years (apart from the Mk2 Fiesta I also own) is a Mk3 Escort that was in the small town where my parents live. It was a beige colour, and obviously very well used indeed, but I've not seen it now for some months, so maybe the grim reaper has finally caught up with that one too, but fingers crossed it still survives somewhere!

My Escort isn't being used as a daily, but I had a 1.8D Combi van from new as a company vehicle initially, before I took it on myself. I kept it for fifteen and a half very happy years, and retired it with 200k miles on the clock. The engine was still as sweet as a nut, it was just the ever increasing amounts of welding needing doing for each MOT that finally led to me parting with it.

Ok, here are some pics of my diesel Fords, past and present.

First up is the 1986 Escort Combi 1.6D, which wasn't infact my van, but it was our family business's van. We bought it nearly new (a couple of hundred or so miles on the clock). I shared it with someone else. This was the very first diesel vehicle I drove.

Note the polythene still on the seats in the photo, it was that new!

This van only lasted about three years, as it lost an argument with a taxi one evening, when my workmate's girlfriend was driving it!

Next up is the second Combi, a 1.8D bought new in 1989, and this was my company van from the outset. I bought this van from the leasing company, and ran it as my daily for 15 and a half years. It was a great little van. The new 1.8 engine was smoother, and of course more powerful, but I always loved the sound and exhaust note of the 1.6D.

(To be continued. Photobucket playing up, so just checking the pics are working......)

Now for my current cars.

First up is the Fiesta 1.6D I bought a couple of years ago. It only has about 30k miles on the clock. These are even rarer than their Escort counterparts!

Being a smaller car than the Escort, it's quite nippy in comparison! In its day I recall the 1.6D Fiesta was class leading for a time, with its economy.

IMG_2439.jpg

After my Combi van I owned three petrol Escorts (one Mk3 and two Mk4s). All were low mileage 'minters'.

I then came across the current 1986 1.6DL estate, and couldn't let it pass me by, so I've come full circle now!

It's only done 43k miles. It had sat outside unused and unloved for 12 years, but other than needing some new door window rubbers, it wants for little else.

Your estate looks fantastic, my Escort is in no way in condition as yours I do use it daily and unfortunately it's parked outside as I have no room in the garage, I do get attached to my cars and I was only going to have this Escort for short period and ended up close to 10years of ownership i'm not planning to sell at this point but every year I say to myself i'm going to sell and get another Ford but I end up changing my mind.

It's great seeing another 1.6d

For a car of its mileage, living outside and being used daily, yours too looks great!

I know what you mean about getting attached to them. I promised myself I would never have more than three cars at any one time, and now I'm up to six! I can barely cope with two, let alone six!

I've also got first refusal on another 1.6D, a saloon like yours. If that came my way then something would have to give, and I would probably let the Fiesta, and maybe the estate go, but I've decided I will derfinitely have to keep one of these old 1.6Ds, because of their rarity, particularly in original and low mileage condition. Pity I couldn't keep them all for ever, as I know whatever I eventually end up parting with will most likely get the Zetec treatment by someone... lowered, with alloys, tinted windows and what have you!

A couple more pics of my estate.....

Collection off six very nice, I've only got three did have four, the estate looks like its just come out of a show room I've got to show my dad your pictures he will love them.

The more cars you have it can be a full time job looking after them all.

Its also good to talk to like minded people who enjoys there cars.

I hope your dad enjoys the pics.

Does your car still have its original 1.6DL badging on the rear?

I keep my cars undercover, which helps me preserve them, but of course it isn't cheap paying for the storage costs! My daily (a 23 year old Peugeot 205 diesel) has to sit outside though! Lol

I need to give the engine compartment of the estate a good clean, as it got quite dusty and grubby during its time out of use.

Once I've got hold of some new door window rubbers it'll look really good. I plan to take it to the 'Simply Ford' event in Beaulieu in May. It's only 10 minutes from where I live, so very handy for me. I took my Fiesta last year, and I was the only 1.6D there, that I noticed.

The internet is great for sharing our interests, and has helped me no end for gaining and sharing information.

Now tried to edit my profile 9 times, and it STILL won't accept my details. It seems as if I'm stuck with Escort Ghia on my profile forever! Lol

I eventually managed to at least re-set my own password, but changing other details just ain't happening, but I will try again at some stage....

I like your avatar, and the fact that your car also retains it's original badging.

I did buy a brand new Haines manual for the 1.6D engine 'back in the day', and I know it's about somewhere, but can I find it right now, can I heck! So I've bought a used one on eBay.

The fact there are nearly always a few on there at any one time just goes to show how 'common' these 1.6Ds were back then!

I'm taking my Escort to the Simply Ford event in Beaulieu next weekend. I bet I'll be the only 1.6D there!

I've ordered some new window rubbers, as these are the only things that let the car down.

Still can't update my profile. Grrr!

Im sure you will be the only 1.6D, I would look after yours as I've never seen a diesel in such great condition as yours.

Hopefully the weather is dry.

I'm glad you like my car. We're certainly a minority with our 1.6Ds!

Bit of a trek to Beaulieu from Yorkshire, so I can understand you not wanting to make that trip. It's only 10 minutes away for me, so barely a chance for the car to even get warm!

The weather looks set to be fine too, and I'm really looking forward to going.

The only thing that has let my car down is the door window scraper rubbers, which were badly perished, and had gone white and lumpy.

Well I knew Ford no longer supplied them, but I was put in touch with a trim suppliers that sells them. I was a little put off by the quoted £65, though, and then they would have to be cut down to size and trimmed to fit.

I eventually tracked down an accident damaged Mk4, and they sold me its set for £28 all in. They are almost like new!

So I fitted them straight away. Very pleased!

Before and after pics......

Are you on Facebook?

This is a good site, which I contribute too. Hope the link works.

https://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/groups/ScortedMK3/

There are a couple of diesel owners on there, and if you scroll down the page to a few days ago, you will see a good thread on the diesels. One person came on and slagged them off, but he soon got shot down in flames! Lol

You will see a pic of my Ford 1600 diesel brochure, which was produced when they released the engine in 1983.

The new Window door seals look really good, they were worth buying.

Unfortunately I'm not on or use Facebook.

I will have to give you my email address so that you can send me some pictures of the ford meet.
