I've just realised that there doesn't seem to be a temperature gauge on the new Fiesta. Is there one built in to the digital display bit? or is there no temperature gauge at all?

Theres a light that comes on if the temperature gets too high so I would assume theres one in the digital hack part of the dash.

The new fiesta has a temp gauge for inside the car on the temp panel, and one for outside temp on the speedo dash board, but always seem to find that a few degrees out.

As SY99 said there's no gauge. You just get a warning light if things get hot. It is becoming more usual on smaller cars for no temp gauge. The current Micra has never had one either - just speed, fuel and revs like the Fiesta.

Going back 20 years or so, most cars in the Fiesta bracket didn't even have tachometers (rev counters).

Cheers guys, just wondering as my 1998 Fiesta has an engine temp gauge, so i was imagining that there must be one on the new fiesta, even if its in the digital part. seems like there isnt. Dont suppose its a great loss, just a useful bit of kit to have. I've never really trusted dashboard lights, as you never really know whats the deal untill they come on, and thats if they come on at all.

Thanks everyone :)

I think its a backward step that there is no guage. If the car is running too cold due to a stuck thermostat, then you will never know. If it is running slightly hot then seeing a needle move passed the normal setting would alert you before the warning light comes on. I will try and figure a way of reading the water temperature when I get my car.

There must be a way since many test operatons have to be done with the engine at normal operating temperature.

Thoroughly agree with you shabazmo. I like to have a good idea of what is going on under the bonnet, not saying there should be old style volt meters and pressure gauges. But the coolant temp is really important for so many reasons...

Recycling this old topic, I was in my car yesterday doing an 8 mile trip which took 1 hr 30 mins!

Anyhow while sitting in the traffic and watching the rain pelting down, the temperature which so far as I know is registering the outside temp of the car (yes?) went up to 43 degrees! Now it was 7.45pm. Raining hard outside, airconditioning on low. I don't think the temp was 43 degrees. As soon as I started moving at a reasonable speed, the temp went down to about 17/18 which was more realisitic. So what temp was it registering? Was it the engine temp?

I think it was really outside temp, don`t know now where exactly is the diode that is measuring temperature, but when it is near radiator or under the bonnet without a lot of fresh air it could measure higher temperature, when you moved the fresh air was bowing over the diode and it was showing +- right outside temp ;)

You can get a whole bunch of engine temperatures (and other data) by unlocking the dash. It's a pain to do every trip, but if you had a specific interest in the data for one or two trips (to test something maybe) then it's handy.

While starting the engine, hold down the 'mileage reset' button on the rev counter and keep it pressed for 10 seconds. The dash will go into test mode - advance the tests with the button until you get to the temperatures section (google 'ford dash unlock' for a complete list of all the data fields) and leave it there. Go for a drive and watch the constantly updated figures!

This also works on other Fords, Focus and Mondeo being two others I've tried. Hope that helps.

Chris, this is very interesting information. Where on earth did you learn about holding the ‘mileage reset’ to get this display.
Are there any other shortcut techniques in the Fiesta to discover?

Thanks again

Here's the full list:

1.Shows a Gauge Sweep
2. Shows all ACL on the LCD (LCD TEST)
3. Turns on all the annunciators on the dash (BULB TEST)
4. Displays hexadecimal value for ROM level (FirmWare Revision)
5. Displays the hexadecimal value for EE level
6. Shows DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) ---------------------> THIS IS VERY, VERY, VERY HANDY!
7. Digital Speedometer - mph
8. Digital Speedometer - kph
9. N/A
10. Digital tachometer
11.Fuel volume
12. Engine coolant temperature
13. Battery voltage
14. ABS/TRACS Error Code
15. Electronic brake distribution (EBD) failure
16. Illumination
17. Crank Sense

Actually, I think there are more than just 17 tests on certain revisions of the NewFiesta, so I wouldn't take the above as 100% gospel. The engine temperature is pretty easy to work out though, just look for the value which increases with time and decreases when the cooling fan comes on!

As for other 'short-cuts' - I'd put a tenner on there being more. My biggest disapointment to date is not knowing / being able to find the one that controls anti-hijack central locking! :(

Have fun!
