Well how many 1.0 Ecoboost owners know that the current Fiesta had only 5bhp less but has lots more torque than that Iconic hot hatch from the 70's?

I wouldn't call the 6 Ibs/ft of torque the Zetec S has over the 205 'lots more', especially when the old 205 is 20% quicker 0-60.

The best 1.9 was the XUJ with 119 ft lbs compared to 140+ for the 1.0 Ecoboost....

To be fair the 0 to 60 times are irrelevant as the 1.0 isn't claimed to be a hot hatch is it. The difference is actually around 1.3 seconds but I was simply stating, that on paper, it's quite interesting. I know the Ecoboost has a turbocharger but nonetheless the capacity is almost half! The Fiesta has a far heavier body to meet crash protection requirements and we all know the Pugs metal was about the same thickness as a condom!

What always gets me is how some things such as acceleration and mpg haven't greatly improved over the decades. Technology and safety wise current day cars were unimaginable 20 or even 10 years ago, but the actual 'end output' of engines in standard every day cars is so unchanged. Looking back to cars my dad and uncles had when they were my age, they were just as quick if not quicker than the Zetec-S I traded in a few months back and fuel economy wasn't much worse. Companies keep bringing out all these clever new features and designs and whatever, but they don't really have that much of an impact.

Why don't we all have cars capable of 0-60 in 1 second and 100+mpg!

Always a trade off mate, price usually. Cars these days are cheap compared to earnings. Plus my second car in 1974 was a 1963 997cc Ford Anglia. Just over 10 years old, slow as a tortoise with a wooden leg, did about 20 - 25 mpg, wouldn't start in winter and needed looking after like u wouldn't believe with grease nipples, multi grade oils, rubbish gauze filters and 5000 mile service intervals. Trust me, modern cars are awesome, but think about how much oil companies would want for a gallon of petrol if cars did 100mpg... I know I'm cynical but it's realistic. Modern cars are truly awesome in every way!

With the size and weight of modern cars its amazing that they match the go and mpg of previous generations. The latest fester prob weighs twice the 70s original.

The recent small capacity petrol turbos (and often minus a cylinder) offer the sort of performance/mpg jump last seen in the late 70s and early 80s when fuel injection appeared on mass market cars.

Instead of 2+ litres and sub 30 mpg the 1.6 'GTI' engines offered more power and 40+mpg.

What amazes me is that I used to own a Rover SD1 V8 in the early 80's and a 2.8 4x4 Sierra in the early 90's and they only produced a measly 150bhp. They felt a lot more powerful than the 1.6 and 2.0 cars that produce the same power now, but I assume that is due to the torque. Also 8 valve engines always felt more torquey than the 16 valves albeit far less efficient.

And don't forget that petrol was soooo cheap back then compared to now. When I started driving in 1977 petrol was 50p a gallon ( and a man pumped it for you), yes that's a gallon not a measly litre, currently it's something like £6.50 a gallon. MPG didn't really matter as much and you could work on your car yourself, you had to be rich to go to a dealer, engines looked so small in the engine bay compared to now.

Aaahhh the good old days!

I owned a pre cat 205 1.9 GTI for a couple of years.

It was fast and had increadible handling.

No electronics stability etc and no power steeing.

It did around 25 to the gallon. Was a great car from a different era.
