Anyone tried a 64GB card in theirs? My 16GB only gets me just over 2 hours recording.

What bitrate is yours set at? Low, med or high?

Does the bit rate affect the picture quality? The high setting creates larger file size, but I don't really see too much improvement.

I haven't mounted mine properly yet, so just trialed it by resting it on the dash so far, so maybe there is some vibration which makes the picture less sharp as I can only make out number plates when I am right behind another car. I have taken off the plastic covers over the rain sensor to see it its worth fixing to those and there is loads of empty space in there so I might hide the USB transformer there and then take the cable up the the headliner that way as well.

I just found the mobius section on dashcamtalk.com which has loads of ideas on making custom mounts and I have a few ideas to work on. Does anuone know if silicone sealer (as used in bathrooms) would stick well to the windscreen BTW? There is also an idea about connecting into the cables supplying the roof dome light which is switched by unlocking the doors and switches off 5 minutes after locking (at least on a Smart car). I'll have to see what happens on the Focus and see if this is feasible to power the camera.

Just reporting back here. A while ago, I mentioned here that the right angled cable I bought from the Chinese seller (which a few of you also bought) was causing problems. (I was probably just unlikely to receive a faulty one, as nobody else has had any problems it seems.) So I ordered the cable and 5V adaptor from the dash cam seller, and since it's been working perfectly, no more random failures while recording anymore.

For the record, I chose the cigarette lighter method - ran the cabling across underneath the sun-visor, into the A-Pillar, across underneath the foot-well, behind the center console plastic, and out almost exactly where the cigarette lighter is. From the outside of the car, it is impossible to see any wiring, except for the bit of the cable connected to the back of the dash cam of course.

I've been recording for quite some time now, I am yet to come across any really crazy/foolish examples of driving - though I suppose that's a good thing!! :)

Not sure where that is in the settings. It's 1080p @ 30fps.

Bit rate does indeed affect picture quality, and as SDHC cards are so cheap you should film at the highest bit rate possible. Normally this is set by the manufacturer, but you can switch between 1080 and 720 settings and this will affect the bit rate.

The global recordings settings, do you have it set to high? It's been highlighted that there's no real difference between the 3 in terms of quality but the high setting increases the file sizes by 40%

Check it out in your settings, you may then get more data on your card :)

Tested hours of videos, there is a difference between high med and low quality, the quality difference only seems to make a huge difference at night. On a sunny day unless you are doing back to back recordings you won't notice the difference although I have notice number plates are easier to seen when using high quality as med or low gets a bit more grainy.

I currently got mine set to medium, I find this good enough and does reduce file size.

Turn HDR off this also reduces video file size. As far as I know no one has tested a 64gb card. If you do buy one try the original seller for best compatibility

64GB cards do work, but do not let you update firmware with them in. 32GB and below is required to install FW.

Just buy a cheap 1GB for FW updates :)

Good to know, do you know of any confirmed working brands/classes?

Does the size of card affect firmware updating from the software or just the manual method? (I don't know if the software does it a different way or just automates the manual method).

From what the manual says either way will not work. The camera is unable to read anything over 32gb during a firmware update

I know Samsung and Kingston are safe bets, go for a class 4

Make sure you buy from reputable seller though, lots of fakes out there

I'm not sure such a thing exists. Every 64GB seems to be class 10.

Class 4 is said to be the most compatible however class 10 should work fine. My card is class 10 SDHC Samsung. It works but not 100% after my firmware update it does indeed auto start and stop just fine but manual start up then manual recording seems to freeze.

Class 10 is the better card as it allows for full HD recording where class 4 only goes up to 720p... The other benefit with class 10 cards is much faster read and write speeds!

Not true, total myth when it comes to dash cams

Taken from manual:

Cards

Generally speaking you may use any micro SD, micro SDHC or Micro SDXC card with a capacity of up to 64GB with this camera. Larger cards are most likely also supported but not yet available. To avoid card compatibility problems, always use quality cards with a speed rating of Class 4. There are known problems with a few cards that have a higher class rating, for example some, but not all, Sandisk 32GB Ultra (class 10) will not work properly with earlier firmware versions. You should use firmware v1.17 or above with these cards. For the best compatibility use cards with a class 4 rating if you have them. There is absolutely no advantage in using cards with a higher rating. The most compatible cards are genuine Kingston.

The camera supports cards formatted with FAT, FAT32 or exFAT. Due to technical reasons, you cannot update the firmware if your card is formatted as exFAT. When using the In-Camera formatting routine (see below) cards with a capacity greater than 32GB will be formatted with exFAT. All other cards will be formatted as FAT/FAT32. Older operating systems, for example XP 64-Bit and Windows 2003, do not support exFAT file systems unless you install additional drivers. A list of exFAT drivers can be found at http://search.microsoft.com/en-us/DownloadResults.aspx?q=KB955704.

There are a few programs available, for example guiformat, that are capable of formatting large capacity cards with FAT32. This is not recommended and may void your card's warranty.

►You should always use cards from well known brands. Low quality and no-

name cards, as well as some class 2 (or less) cards, may draw more than 20mA current than quality cards. This can result in unwanted electrical noise such as clicks, chirps, hum and buzzing in the audio recording

As promised boys and girls i have made a guide on how to hard wiring your mobius with step by step instructions on exactly how to hide away all cables.

Special credits to James (Higgsy) for his idea, wouldn't have been done if he did not come up with it all.

Guide can be found here http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/tutorials/article/229-dash-cam-hard-wiring-mobius-actioncam/

Under guides section of the forum hope it helps

For those interested, i have found a rearview mirror mount for the mobius, another discreet, unattachable soulution.

See YouTube video here, skip to 2.00 mins:

This is the eBay link:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/111293666936

Although i have had another search and i beive this possibly may also do the job, its a lot smaller and black all over:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370992726044?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Would it work?

Would not work on my car. Headlight sensor covers would get in the way and not enough space at the sides.

It looks about the same size as the official sticker mount though!

  • 2 weeks later...

This video was catpured saturday right after i just had my car washed, guy in the KIA pulled out whilst trying to park swiping the side of a transit van then quickly fled the scene almost swiping my focus!

Van driver left before i could tell him i might have had a video of the accident because i totally forgot about my dashcam, now that it's all hard wired in and placed behind the rear view mirror i never see it.

Number plates can be seen including a face shot of this wreckless fool behind the wheel who clearly could not handle his vehicle

Number plate WV04 CNU instantcarcheck.co.uk confirm it as KIA Magentis LE 16V, colour: aluminium, petrol
