Mk2.5 Xenon Headlight Conversion

I bought a pair of genuine ST Xenon headlights off of eBay. I managed to get all the lighting on the lights working, but i cannot get the levelers to work.

I understand that there is a wiring modification that can be done to get the levelers (manual or auto?) working.

Any help would be massively appreciated!

Thanks,

Andy :)

The headlight unit has leveling motors inside of the unit it self but that is not the problem. The problem is that you are missing the sensors that connects to the suspension and sends signal to the gem/headlight motors

Without the sensors the xenons will not self level infact they will point downwards to the lowest position possible at all times the sensors can be bought from ford but you need to have wiring already on the car for this.

I am currently carrying out this retrofit mod, self leveling plus washers.

The headlamps can be modified to work without leveling sensors or washers (as you've done so far) but of course it will not pass mot and you could possibly get 3 points if pulled.

Without the wiring loom already on the car it will cost you £400 from ford. There is also a jumper loom that may or may not be on the car it's rather complicated, but the wiring will also have feeds for the washer bottle.

Does your car have a 7 pin or 10 pin connector for the headlight?

I'd be working on getting it perfectly legal.

I have a 7 pin plug. Which I understand you can add terminals and piggy back off of other cables. Not sure what this piggy backing feeds though.

If your car has 7 pins then you will need the rest of the wiring loom to make it work legal. There is no manual adjusting of xenons hence you will need the loom consisting of the sensor part, auto leveling sensor module part and washer bottle part plus the extra cables from the leveling module to the headlamp unit it self.

It will not work legally without the above you need a 10 pin loom.

If you're hunting for a second hand loom the wiring colours are the same for adaptive lighting, but I don't know if the wiring specifically for adaptive lighting will have the washer bottle wiring and the sensor wiring

Without this it will never auto level there is nothing on the car you can piggyback off if it was this easy everyone would have done it already bud. If you are serious about doing this I can help you but I assure you without the extra wiring it will not work

If anyone knows where I can get the front sensor from? Ford sell it for about £100. Already checked. The rear sensor I got. You have a headlight module which needs to be put somewhere. Question is where?

As said previously, don't forget to add in the headlight washers if your not wanting trouble from the old bill. I sold a set of headlight washers quite cheap a while ago and haven't seen any for sale since, could try breakers but will no doubt want an arm & a leg for them.

Buying sensors second hand is very hard to come by. St and rs sensors have a different mounting bracket and will not fit regular models such as zetec or titanium. Most carss that have xenons are st/rs and its very likely the used part is off an st/rs

Ford is almost the only option on sensors they never seem to pop up on eBay, not the right ones anyways

Hi Kurt, sorry to high jack this thread, but what different's does it make if you don't have headlight washers fitted for Xenon Headlights, not heard of this one before, I'm looking at upgrading my headlights so would like to know why I need washers for the lights, my focus is a 58 plate CC3 2.0 L tdi. With normal halogens lights. Brian

It's a requirements for any xenon equipped car to have headlight washers. It is also now an MOT failure to not have washers if xenons are fitted and you can get points on your licence for not complying if pulled over.

It is said that dirt on the headlight lens can distort the xenon beam and cause it to dazzle other road users.

Feel free to post up bud I welcome the conversations :D

Sorry to hijack but I often get dazzled by cars fitted with xenons as standard! Seems its just another way to rob the motorists! All the money made from "fines" should be used to repair the roads instead of funding immigrants! Sorry rant over!

Thanks Kurt for info, maybe I won't change the lights, just done my DRL , looks the same as yours, next job is my rear number plate reversing kit, 3 sensors on bottom of plate which you then fit number plate too, & wire up to reversing lights, not certain if there going to work on my convertible as the number plate is mounted on the boot & not the bumper, also thinking of retro fitting power folding wing mirrors, but not certain yet what extra cables I might need as mine are electric/ heated/indicator type, Thanks Brian

Ps. Must say this is a great forum site, have managed to fix a few problems already since I've been on here, & it's only been a couple weeks. Ta.

Hiya. I'd look at the Philips Xtreme vision bulbs. I had a set in my Mk 1.5 and they were brilliant. I'm now using Osram Night breaker unlimited and they are complete and utter rubbish. The standard halogens light up more road!

Hi Andy,

I have a set of Xenons on the way to me but I have the 7 pin plug as well. You said you got all the lights working, was it as simple as just plugging them in and hey presto or did you have to mess with any of the wiring? Looking at the wiring diagrams it looks like there might be an additional earth needed from pin 8?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Rob

Rob, I simply added a short earthing wire between the ballast (by taking one screw out and using a ring crimp and !Removed! it against the ballast, and then earthing it on to the chassis by taking one of the nuts off and using a larger ring crimp on a bit of wire.

Unfortunately this only gets then to light up, but you still cannot level them as there are further wiring to be done, which I am not 100% sure on.

Hello all, it’s been 8 years since the last comment on this but I’m currently after buying the xenon headlights. Just checking to see how ye wired the earth from chassis to the headlight was it just straight to the terminal on the headlight itself.

hopefully somone sees this.
regards,

killian.

We’ll just looking to see how they connect a the wire from chassis to the terminal in the loom plug in port 8 so that the xenons light up. Can the plug be taken apart so I can put it through or how does it work🥴
