Hi all, new here...

An old dud, (64 NB), who has had a few quickish cars in his day...

Live in Leicestershie UK.

Apologies for any typos...

I have had my Fiesta S 1.0L 3 Cylinder jobby for exactly a year now and part chopped

my previous, 2007, ST for it; both puchased barnd new...

Previous cars all new...

Honda CRX 1.6i-16, 1989.

Honds Civic VTI, 1991.

(Ignore this one, Toyota RAV 4 Twin sunroof. - UGH!)

Ford Puma 1.7VCT. 1998.

Ford SportKA, 1.6, 2004. <- Undoubtably the best handling car I have ever had.

Ford Fiesta ST, 2007.

Current Ford above.

These are the tests I have done to rev limit, note clock readings, allow 3% optimistic:-

At max torque at 1400 RPM.

1st 0 - 34 MPH.

2nd 0 - 65 MPH, I rarely use 1st gear as the engine has sufficient torque.

3rd 20 - 104 MPH, this is SOOOO wide and superb to have fun with.

4th 30 - ? MPH.

5th 40 - ? MPH.

MPG tests. Currently my winter urban is 41.5 MPG.

Summer Urban 46.7 MPG.

2 off combined roughly 100 Miles each way, outbound 54.0 MPG, inbound 55.4 MPG.

20 minute country lane, boy racer thrash, 49.1 MPG.

Long distance run from J21 M1 to QE bridge M25 between 54 and 60 MPH, 67.9 MPG.

The engine has a tremendous sound and grunt to suit my aging boy racer needs.

Is it fun, you bet but it does take some getting used to.

Is it good looking, well it turns eyes compared to its related cousins.

An ST without the ST grunt, but good enough for me...

Motor engineering has come a LLOONNGG way since my first car:-

For Anglia 105E with a Solex downdraught....

Welcome, i like the introduction! Nice background, and the figures that you've given are a nice touch too!

I must say that is some long gearing!

How do you find going from the ST to this in terms of driveability? I love the flexibility of a forced induction, but i was saying the other day how i do miss being able to rev out a normally aspirated engine!

Nice review......I too would like to know how you compare the ecoboost to the 2.0 ST, I would have thought the ST would have the advantage in the higher revs, but lower down not much in it? Or am i way off....

And Loz, the 1.0L feels very characteristic of a forced induction engine in the lower revs, but I'd say 4000rpm to 6500rpm it feels and sounds more like a normally aspirated engine and likes being revved out

Also, I wouldn't recommend setting off in second gear, although the engine might be happy doing it, the clutch will wear faster.

I really love high revving engines and this is a very old AMIGA digitised

image of 1992 of the best engine bt far, reg no, J781PBC:-

(I hope this shows...)

http://wisecracker.host22.com/public/VTI.JPG

It is my VTI Civic, one of 50 imported into ther UK with the very rare

painted VTI badge, giving 167 BHP instead of 158 BHP in the remianing

production run from a 1598cc NA.

it was road tested at:-

0 - 62 in 6.8.

138 MPH top speed.

Read lined at 8000.

Cut out at almost 9000.

This was a wolf in sheeps clothing.

(I owned a Chevvy 396 SS Malibu muscle car and it would run rings around that.)

As for the S to my old ST.

Handling is marginally better, but hey, it does have 6 years newer engineering.

The ST was more flexible around the 5000+ point but 3rd, 4th and 5th were

low in the legs compared to this one with half the engine cc.

I can't comment about the new ST as I didn't really need the extra grunt now

that I am closing the point to retirement. However the S 3 cylinder jobby is

no slouch. It is stable in roundabouts with 45 profiles when entering at say

40 MPH whereas the ST with lower 35? profiles was rock hard and uncomfortable

if confronted with a pothole in the same situation.

The S does feel like 0 - 62 in 9.4, almost the same as my SportKA, whereas

the STs 0 - 62 in 7.9 seemed more like 8.2+. This could be probably be put down

to my boot load of junk I always carried.

Steering feel on both is much the same.

I have one serious gripe about the new S though. The tyre noise on __some__

surfaces is lousy. I don't remember any other of my cars having the same

relative dB levels but I was younger then and probably a little more tolerant.

Hey! I love your whole paragraph about previous comparison I found it really interesting. If you are about really getting your miles for your money but like the power at it's disposable you should get your car remapped. I have the 123ps model 1.0 3cyl and I thought it was already an amazing little engine, too gear last week were really raving about it. I got my car remapped and that pushed the power to 151bhp. The main reason I got this was for an increase in MPG. I'm now getting 65mpg driving at 40 in 5th gear and it no longer feels the urge to stall, the best thing is too being able to foot my down when needing to and it's so much easier to over take because all turbo lag is gone. My car now does 0-60 in around 7.8 seconds which for a 1.0 is outstanding. I think it would do you wonders from what I have read on this topic

Hi GlynnZS...

I do have to say here that it took me a while to get used to the half second turbo lag.

No problem now though. This baby will easily hold its own against a 2.0L Audi diesel turbo.

When in third after say 50 MPH this tool enters a new dimension as the competition

have to go up another cog when I still have around 15 - 20 MPH to go before even

thinking about it.

It is real fun in this gear, believe me. I smile to myself when gaining on my opponents

after 50+ MPH and there is little they can do about it...

Yes! I am still a lunatic... ;oD

As for pulling off in second I have been doing it for years and never had a new clutch.

Hi Jordanch...

I had no idea there was a __chip_change__ for this baby.

I assumed that because of the small number of cylinders and cc size that

there would be ROM SW limit on the torque/power curve for reliability.

Got a pointer?

Yeah, when on sweeping B roads i generally just stay in third gear as the power spread across a 30mph to ~100mph range is amazing! I bet you couldnt do that in your VTI, but i bet it was a joy trying to keep it over 6000rpm and in vtec!

Ive been lucky to ride in a large number of fast Honda's from civic VTIs to accord type R's and a supercharged civic type R (my uncle owns a few Honda dealerships) and always wanted to own one myself, every car nut should have owned a high revving Honda I think!

Hi GlynnZS...

3rd puts a new dimension of long legs especially when one knows it is a 998 cc

engine doing the task.

In my original post I did the county lane thrash around the Hunstanton area

of Norflok, some great country test roads there.

I got my Hondas from the now non-existant Gerard-Honda dealership in Leicester.

This is what VTI was like:-

0 - 3500 RPM; a Ford Escort 1.3, a sedate womans shopping car.

3500 - 5000 RPM, A boy racer Ford Escort XR3i.

5000 - 8000 A grenade... ;oD

Handling in the wet was, erm, dreadful.

In the dry however good for the period.

My current S handling is simple superb in dry and wet.

I am aware that the S might slide a little in the wet but nothing

like the VTI, you could not get the power on without serious

understeer. Tractability was near nil when in lock with water on

the roads.

The sound was the closest thing you would get to an F1 sound.

I do miss that. The CRX red lined at around 7200 and had a

similar sound. Wonderful.

However the S has the grunt sound, (inside the cabin that is),

of my yank V8 muscle car, the 396 SS Malibu <- 350 BHP.

Much the same feel although the Muncies, (sp), (box and diff), in

the yank, did give the big block more flexibility.

I would really love another Honda, especially a type R Civic but I

have this thing that is called a wife and if she says it is Wednesday

then who am I to argue... ;oDD

Ignore the wife and get a type R. I had one for 8 years and still miss it but not the running costs. Followed the R with an Leon FR which was easier to drive because of the Turbo but not as much fun as the Type R.

Yeah, I remember the servicing costs too and in the early 1990s my Civic was every 5000 miles and cost around 150 quid THEN!

Is the current Civic in type R guise however?

The Fiesta S is much better looking than the new Civic and far? cheaper.

My S deal, from the Sandicliffe Group was for 14300 UKP with two years free servicing and breakdown recovery.

Not a bad deal...

First service is next Thursday, (from this post date), and the car has done about 11500 Miles...

The new civic looks like it could be a belter 1.6 turbo , but rumours are it's gonna be 20k plus

With the chip it's squeezed a lot more power of out of the tiny 998cc 3cyl, I'm so surprised by the results. Someone from my work has a 250CDI class manual amg edition, and my car with the chip kept up- I have all the economical benefits put power at my disposal. 2nd gear revs like anything and I have to have a good grip on the wheel to stop it sliding! 3rd gear at 50 is amazing, I put my foot down and I'm doing 90 in a matter of seconds it's amazing- I would recommend it to anyone. It's as power as a 2.0 litre petrol easily. I do have my dyno print out if you'd like to see it.
