Disappointing Mpg

Hi, I`m Malcolm, just joined you guys.

I bought a 63 plate 1.0L Ecoboost 125 with 86 miles on the clock just after Christmas on the basis of good consumption figures. Unfortunately this is not backed up on the road. I know that official figures should be taken with a pinch of salt( some may say a bit of a con) but comparing this model with other equivalent cars it appeared to come out best. But instead of the proposed average mpg of 55.4 I have just returned from a 500 mile trip which included a lot of motorway driving together with a good amount of 50mph journeys in traffic on A roads and have only achieved 41.8. Even allowing for the fact that Ford`s figures are unrealistic a difference of 25% is unacceptable. Comparing with the extra urban figure of 64.2 it is farcical.

I am not a boy racer and have been extra vigilant in terms of economic driving, eg changing gear as per displays and using stop start. Prior to this trip most of my journeys were fairly short and the dealer advised that the engine should loosen up after 1000 miles. I`ve now done over 1600 but nothing seems to have changed. I shall be back to the garage this week but is anyone experiencing similar performance?

I have a 1.6 tdci Zetec s and I'm not impressed at all with what I'm getting compared to my mk2 focus.

Some cars can take up to 7000 miles before the engine breaks in properly i would take much notice to the mpg till after the first service personally as by then it should have fully broken in

I'm on 9657 I have never had one this bad.

I'm nearly at 40,000 miles and have only really seen a big improvement since I passed about 15k I reckon. The best thing to do is disregard the manufacturers quoted figures and keep a log of your own calculations. That way, you can track any improvements made. The problem with MPG is that there are so many contributing factors which affect it, no matter how economically you drive.

I never listen to manufacturer they talk bull.. only reason I changed was to get a Little more mpg not less..
