I'm getting close to replacing my old Focus mk1 (2002) with a newer one. I'm considering both second hand and brand new, but I'm having trouble deciding between which engine to go for. Diesel or petrol? I've been reading up on the subject and I can't seem to make up my mind. What I want is a car that's fun to drive and with good acceleration. I took a look at the dyno results from both engines from a tuning company, and as far as I can tell, the diesel looks much better on paper than the petrol.
With about 30% more torque, and therefore 30% more hp at the same rpm , the diesel seems to be a better choice. I gather the extra weight of the engine (about 200lbs) and the fact you have to change gear more often, is why the 0-60mph time is slower than the petrol.
I live in Norway, so the diesel fuel prices are about 10-15% lower than petrol. Take that fact and add the higher mpg of the diesel, it seems like a no brainer.
Even so, I can't shake the feeling that the petrol version would be much more fun to drive.
They both cost about the same to buy.
