Fiesta Zetec S 1.6 Tdci (90 Bhp) Tuning / Fuel Economy

Hi guys

I'm new to all this and I was hoping that I could get some advice from people more experienced in this field...

I have a Ford Fiesta 1.6 tdci 90 bhp which runs out of the extended warranty very soon. I've had the car for few years and I am a bit dissapointed with its performance and economy. It's really slow and whenever I have to go back into it after driving something faster, I feel like crying.

I have read several posts on this forum re: remaps etc. I have no previous experience with tuning and always perceived it as a bit chavy... but the time has come and I will either make my fiesta a bit more nippy or I'll get rid...

What is your experience with 1.6tdci after remap/tuning box? Is it worth it? Do you notice a difference? I've had a look on youtube to see if I could find some figures like 0-60 etc but there is nothing there. I would want to keep it as stock as possible and I wouldn't want to change turbo, injectos, clutch etc.

Would remap/ tuning box do the trick?

On a separate note... I use my fiesta mainly on m'ways and found it shocking that a diesel engine is made to run constantly at 3000rpm if you intend to do 70 -75 mph. Is a remap/tuning box going to change anything? It seems a bit pointless having a diesel which is over-revved at motorway speeds. Even a 1.6 golf tdi keeps it under 2000 rpm at similar speeds.

Many thanks

You will definitely notice a difference with a decent remap. Personally had my last car mapped, and it was great. Not had any experience with tuning boxes, only because most of them are just used to trick the car into thinking it's getting more air, so the car then adjusts the fueling. As far as a remap goes, you should see an improvement in economy if driven normally. And quite a bit more grunt too.

As for the engine speed. No remap will change that as the gearbox dictates the speed of the engine to the speed you are travelling at.. A remap tends to do one thing or the other, you can usually have more power, or better fuel consumption. Any improvement in both is likely to be so minor to the point that you will still not be satisfied with the result.

Sorry but I disagree with this. If driven normally, a remapped car will produce an improvement in MPG, results do vary looking at peoples results, but there is improvement. And as far as power, between 20 & 30 bhp and more in torque, makes it feel like a different car.

As above.

A remap will improve both under normal driving conditions. Obviously, the harder you drive, and the more power and torque you use, the more fuel you will too.

Remapping a derv produces the best results by far. My old civic 2.2 derv beats 120d when mapped and I went from doing 55mpg to 61mpg. Best 299 I spent on the car. Have a look at dark developments specialist diesel tuning Inc turbos fuel management, exhausts the works.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Do you have anyone that you could recommend?

Also, is a remap likely to significantly affect my insurance? What's your experience?

Dark Developments will do a bespoke map for you. Other than that just usual superchips stuff. Want really increase it but in reality not many people declare maps on their cars, the accident investigator will have a hard time finding it unless he has fords own programme reader device or the Bosch one which costs several K. But own risk of course.

Actually if you read my post properly you will see that refer to having both at the same time. If you remap and you then use that extra power, your comsumption will not improve dramatically. if you drive for consumption, then you're not using that power.

As mentioned above, most tuning boxes will trick the car causing an adjustment in fuelling levels.

IMO the way forward is to get an ECU remap.. From my own personal experience having had my 1.6 tdci done I can safely say it's the best £300 I've spent on it.

The difference in torque is immeasurable - the car will pull through all the gears with ease and certainly put the fun back in to driving!

With regards to 0-60 I had a friend time mine and on 3 different runs they all came in just under/above 10s

If you don't slam your right foot down hard and drive as you would do normally you'll likely see an improvement in mpg, mine went from an average of 50.5 pre map to 59.4 remap (done on several tanks of fuel)

To summarise you really can't go wrong with a remap, you'll certainly feel the difference! If you're near bucks I'll take you for a spin in mine!

Thanks guys. I wish I was a bit closer to Bucks now ha!

Do you have any experience with Darkside development?. I will give them a call this week and see what they say.

I saw someone recommending a leeds company but I can't seem to find the post now. Really tempted to do the remap now!

Also, just browsing through their website, i can't see any information about ford engines? Do they only specialise in vw group?

Martyn... With regards to intercoolers and turbos would you have to switch out any engine components/gearbox etc so it can handle the extra power?

Also, my fez is an 07 tdci (mk 6.5 I believe) and there is both a superchips remap and bluefin.. Well worth it IMO

Nothing you.can do with gearbox, might need forged rods, new head bolts. Better clutch as it'll generate monster torque.

Hi

Just stick a focus 1.6 tdci 115ps and remap that to 140ps

focus 1.6 are 90 bhp and 109bhp.. the 1.8 tdci is 115 bhp....

depending on your set up, id leave the turbo, get everything else done and be happy... remember once the inter-cooler has been fitted.turbo back exhaust (if u wish quicker spool up of turbo) it needs mapping on the rollers.... a stage 1 map is good for induction and cat back exhaust......

just remember the 1.6 tdci is prone for turbo failure due to lack of maintenance

This was rectified with modified internal tweaks on the introduction of the mk7 late 2008 onwards.
