fiesta suspension WARNING

Update - I have got my car back. It hasn't cost me anything ( at first I was told I was liable for getting it into Ford for warranty repair) but just the one side has been repaired.

Storm,no ,no,, no springs are repaired in pairs.you still have a Faulty spring on the other side that could go ANYTIME,this is totally unacceptable.check out what the other forum members have said & done.FORD ARE BLAGGING THEIR WAY THROUGH ALL THIS WITH NO RESPECT FOR HUMAN LIFE,obviously we are all very disposable to them.WHY IS IT ONE FORD DEALER [mine]KNOWS THE SCORE AND WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE WHEREAS THE DEALER YOU ARE WITH IS GIVING SUB STANDARD service? who knows maybe they are picking up brownie points for fleecing the public.i urge you to contact watchdog again with your new information.IN FACT IF EVERYBODY ELSE INCLUDED IN THESE POSTINGS VOICES THEIR CONCERNS WITH WATCHDOG SURELY THEY MUST TAKE NOTICE.

Storm just be very aware that your car might still be at risk.take care.

Have just concentrated on my car for now.

The regional director for the Ford dealers I use says this is not a common fault as far as he can see and there is no reason to suppose the other spring will go - so they will only do the one - I just got an e-mail from him.

I will speak to customer service tomorrow, they are ringing between 10.30 and 12.30 - I'll see if they will do the other side as a gesture of good will.

I got a quote from the recovery company this morning and the quote was 70.50 to take the vehicle so that in itself was worth pursuing.

I'll keep you posted.

Hi,

I think you should speak to the dealer again it is dangerous to just replace one side they are supposed to be replaced in pairs. The dealer should know that, tyres, suspension anything like that in pairs!!!

I spoke to customer service today and she is ringing back tomorrow re. repairing other side - I'll let you know what happens. The Ford dealer that repaired it quoted 120.00 for the other side. They are very difficult to deal with - that is for sure!

Storm please contact watchdog again explain the hassle you are having & that they only repaired one side.what they have done is dangerous and puts your life at risk.

Just picked mine up, i asked the salesman about this problem with the suspension, and he said there have been no problems at their place, and he went and asked the technician manager who also said he hadnt had no problems as of yet. But he did say the warranty would cover that anyway.

We will see how i get on!!! But at the moment, im enjoying the car!

Hi i am still fighting with my car. Last week i was told my problem was down to wear and tear due to speed humps, pot holes and road conditions, so Ford Direct are not offering anything towards the cost as a gesture of good will.

So i spoke to the ford garage that have got my car to arrange to have my car picked up as i have had a quote elsewhere a lot cheaper and they have now said it is not down to wear and tear they would not have said that but a manufacturing defect and they are aware of as they have had an email it effects cars btween the dates of 2003 and early 2008. They have now updated the information with ford direct to state it is a manufactoring defect so i am now waiting to hear back.

Hi twick,GREAT news you should now get both sides done free of charge,PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT BOTH COILSPRINGS ARE REPLACED IT IS REALLY THAT IMPORTANT.

TO ALL OTHER FORUM MEMBERS WITH THIS PROBLEM KEEP ON AT YOUR FORD DEALERSHIP AND ALL AFFECTED CARS SHOULD HAVE BOTH COILSPRINGS REPLACED FOR FREE,SLOWLY FORD ARE OWNING UP TO THIS PROBLEM.

I would like to say a HUGE THANKYOU to the people who set up this forum as i have no doubt that without this forum maybe alot of people would have not had their cars repaired FOC.

storm take notice ,as twick has proven keep going and you will get your car repaired free of charge.

Hey did anybody see watchdog tonight?,thousands of mk 1 focus have a huge problem on the instrument cluster panel.they are failing because of a bad design.guess what.....FORD RECKON THEY HAVEN'T A PROBLEM....HAVE WE NOT HEARD THIS BEFORE?let's keep up and get in touch with watchdog about these coilsprings on the fiesta which is a bigger safety problem than the instrument cluster on the focus.SEEMS TO ME THAT FORD DON'T CARE ABOUT CUSTOMER SATISFACTION.

Ford aren't prepared to fix the other side as a gesture of goodwill. I have their assurance that this is not a problem they are aware of <_< I have that assurance from Ford customer service, the Ford dealer and their head office.

I haven't heard from Watchdog even though I emailed them.

The car is back on the road, lets hope I don't hit too many potholes  and that I don't have to come back and tell you the other side has gone.

Good luck to you all and if I can be of any help to you, let me know.

storm, did you not read the other threads on this?ford are pulling the wool over your eyes.they have actually owned up to the fact that there is a problem,do not let this rest.it is dangerous that they have only done 1 side.keep pestering watchdog, just explain that some customers are getting both sides repaired & yet others [you included] are not.this is totally wrong.they are putting you & your passengers at risk.if need be use this forum to prove to ford that other ford dealerships are repairing the fiestas foc.

Hi Slimfast

I emailed watchdog last night to help get them to look into this issue...

It is frustrating knowing someone could be hurt. I was on my way to pick my son up and the weather was bad this c ould have been a lot worse.

If anyone else reading this please notify watchdog if you have had similar problems before someone is hurt.

Never known a broken spring to "hurt" anyone...yet. I did have a cavalier and broke 2 sets of front springs on it due to road humps which cost £140 a time to replace a set. Springs can, and are known to break if a loose piece of gravel ends up trapped under the spring in the seating "cup". kind of like putting a matchstick under a tile and snapping it! ( i would have said it was more attributed to the crap state of our roads these days rather than a "problem" ford are aware of.)

Also, springs do not necessarily need replaced in pairs, it all depends on their age and mileage they have done.

just an addition to my above post, after looking at some of the pictures regarding the broken springs, what i have spotted is that the "cup" design is obviously flawed..........it would have been better if the cup diameter was designed so that if the spring broke, the cup would still allow the rest of the spring to fall down and sit inside the cup, rather than uncoil down the "shocky" as it appears to have done in the pictures. My old cavalier broke 2 sets of springs, but the spring just dropped into the cup so i could at least still drive the car to a garage to be fixed.

I was directed to this thread by another member (thanks hotashel) - the problem is still around, this time on an '05 Fusion with 30,000 on the clock. I know this is more miles than many of you but I am still reporting it to Watch Dog, Trading Standards etc. The garage insisted it was fair wear and tear even though the break was spotless. The more people who see the thread the better.

Hi fellow forum members, i have just joined today. Sorry to go over old ground.

As with many other Ford Fiesta owners who have replied to this thread i too today have suffered the misfortune off suffering this same Coil Suspension Spring problem. Today after opening my garage and unlocking my car and on opening my car door i was greeted with an almighty extremely loud CRACKING noise. Low and behold it turns out the drivers side's front coil suspension spring has broke off at the base. Typically my car is out off warranty as it has a registration date off june 2004. The car has only covered 17,500 miles and has been well looked after, and is still on its original brake pads and front tyres. So hasn't been driven hard honest :-). It also has been serviced at my local ford garage for the past 3 years, that i have owned it.

As with other owners on here, it makes me quite angry that Ford seem to have chosen not to inform us owners off this manufacturing defect on this part. My main dealer deemed it most important at my last service to change my windscreen washer jets, as they said they had had a technical update briefing stating that the washer jet could perish over time and water could seep in to the engine bay causing corrosions. Its a real pity that they didn't deem it that important, to mention the Coil Springs on the Suspension.!

I have yet to speak to my local ford dealer as it now the weekend, but what i was hoping to find out on here from someone if Ford have now held there hands up and now agree that it is indeed a faulty part, and therefore if they are now fixing it free off charge or are they still saying its down to wear and tear and therefore am i on my own. I hope someone can help.

Manufacturing defect? Says who? Coil springs do break, and break for different reasons! You can obviously prove it's a defect or are you just assuming it is because several owners on the forum have posted saying their springs have broken. If that's the case how many thousands of Fiesta owners, myself included have not had a spring break on them? Annoying it may be but unless you can prove it is a defect don't expect Ford to just "fix" your car. First step would be to get a hardness test done on the spring, then have it examined to see the 'crystal structure' of the material at the breakage, that will start to give an idea as to what has caused the spring to break.

No i don't work for Ford but i do have a metallurgists qualification so know a bit about various metals and their properties!
