Loss Of Umph

Morning all.

Was traveling up dronfield bypass last night when a moron cut me up. I was traveling at 50mph to an almost stop. But I noticed that the car wasn't as well fast on set off. And when I got to a steep hill I can normally get up with ease in 3rd. I had to drop to first some times to get momentum up and struggle to get up it in 2nd. Yet I had no message come up on the dash to say anything was wrong.

But this morning she's fine as if nothing was wrong.

Any idea what was wrong?

Could've been regenerating?

Was the radiator fan running when you got home?

One way to tell if its doing a regen is to select "instant mpg" and it will show a definite reduction in mpg.

Eg: Doing 70mph on level ground would, for me, show around 70+ mpg instant but when it's regenerating, it usually struggles to top 30mpg.

You also notice a distinct lack of power/pull during the regen process.

No the fan wasn't on no.

I normally do 60 on the motorway and get around 61mpg. Tbh I didn't look at my impg. Wasn't sure if it was the turbo playing up.

It only did it right after breaking hard. And soon as I switched her off. And I was driving again within about 30 mins. She was fine.

How long does a regen take? I was driving for ten mins after I had to break hard.

Usually a good 20 minutes to complete a regen mate. You should let the regen complete once it starts or you end up reducing the life of your DPF significantly.

The loss of power after heavy braking was probably just pure coincidence in my opinion.

You can help your DPF along by taking your motor for a good 20 to 30 minute run out on the motorway once or twice a month doing 70mph in 4th gear.

The high revs help the exhaust/DPF get hot enough (600 degrees) to enable any soot to be expelled.

There are plenty of topics on here regarding this so there's lots of info for you...

I do 60 miles a day all on the motorway. Mon to Friday. City driving on weekends. Wouldn't of thought I'd have build up.

It could be either a regen as mentioned, or it could be something like dirt in the fuel lines or filter. By in essence slamming the car from 50 - 0 (although not your fault) it may have dislodged some cack and taken it to the filter and may have just slown down the rate of fuel movement. Leaving it overnight has probably allowed it to settle, which is why its OK now.

I would say keep an eye on it, but for now, dont worry :)

Good call jeebo.........

Your motorway miles should be more than sufficient to enable the DPF to regenerate by the way.

As jeebo says, keep a good eye on it.
