What process do you have to go through to purchess a private number plate?

Just found a private plate I'm thinking about getting for my Focus which costs £245. Never done it before just wondering what it involved. :)

I got one for my dad and it is fairly straight forward and easy. Just remeber that whenever you change your car you will have to inform everyone and pay a fee for doing so.
