Uh-Oh! Looks Like I've Got An Oil Leak!

Hi everyone,

So I'd planned on changing the oil in my fiesta this afternoon - up until now it's been serviced at a garage, last one was about 9mths ago.

Lowered the engine under-tray to get at the sump and found this... pics attached. Keen to get opinions on how serious this is and best course of action to take. I'm guessing clean all the areas up and monitor for if/where there is a leak?

Thanks in advance!

It looks like the crankshaft seal has gone. I hope it isn't as its on the gearbox end by looks of it. Your garage have probably over filled it and the pressure has pushed through the seal.

Thanks for the reply - though it doesn't sound like good news. I think I'd better book it into the garage (albeit a different one!) to get it checked out :(

Well to me I would not worry. It's not drippingvto the point your loosing oil is it? If not don't worry because you will always have oil around your gearbox

Thanks mixmasterlooney - it was serviced about 10 months ago, and I haven't topped up the oil since (though I know I really should've planned on doing an oil change after 6 months). Looking at the dipstick, it looks to be up to the lower third of the scale so I don't know whether that would be considered excess oil use that would suggest a proper leak or just normal?

Why would you always have oil around the gearbox?

Why would you always have oil around the gearbox?

Usually from oil leaked out from the drain plug whilst changing the oil it self that stuff doesn't just wash it stays there

Hi Folks

Whatever peoples opinions are,

That needs rectifying.

There should be no oil leaks on a modern car.

None

I own a 1974 mg midget (1275) and believe it or not that doesent leak a drop (yes there is oil in it)

even so, it has no need to go onto the gear box, as the drain plug should be at the rear of the sump??? so why would it blow forward?

could just be a case of replacing the sump gasket.......

+1 for the sump gasket.

Wouldn't imagen it being the sump plug washer as it's at the rear or the sump.

Looking at the first pic the sump gasket does seem more likely from the pattern but the oil isn't excessively wet to suggest a constant leak. I could very well be wrong and it could be a more serious problem

if you cut ur self u put a plaster on it to cover it up.... with ur oil leak, put some gunk on it to cover it up...... both stop leakage... same scenario

it does need fixing asap granted... tbh the op should realize this and get her done....

Thanks for the opinions folks - will be calling a garage tomorrow to get it checked out rather than risking it. Will let you know what they say...

if it does turn out to be a sump gasket... these are easy n cheap enough to fix.... just remember you need ya oil n filter, gasket n sealant..... maybe clean the oil pick up also....

I doubt it's the sump gasket, look at the second picture. The oil is higher up than the sump. Have you checked the oil filter is on tight enough?

The sumps dont have a gasket. Its sealent making the seal. An there common as muck for leaking. 1 hour job to rectify and leave the car over night to let the sealent dry off. Any oil/water will prevent the sealent from hardening

Hi guys, so took the car to garage on Sunday and they believe it's the sump gasket. I live in Ireland so they're quoting 100 euro labour plus the new part/s. Apparently the leak is very minor and slow so they've changed the oil, cleaned the engine so I can keep an eye on it, but I'm going to get it fixed v soon. Thanks for the advice everyone!
