master_warning Posted May 31, 2014 Share Posted May 31, 2014 Hi everyone, So I'd planned on changing the oil in my fiesta this afternoon - up until now it's been serviced at a garage, last one was about 9mths ago. Lowered the engine under-tray to get at the sump and found this... pics attached. Keen to get opinions on how serious this is and best course of action to take. btmaldon Posted May 31, 2014 Share Posted May 31, 2014 It looks like the crankshaft seal has gone. I hope it isn't as its on the gearbox end by looks of it. master_warning Posted June 2, 2014 Author Share Posted June 2, 2014 Thanks mixmasterlooney - it was serviced about 10 months ago, and I haven't topped up the oil since (though I know I really should've planned on doing an oil change after 6 months). Looking at the dipstick, it looks to be up to the lower third of the scale so I don't know whether that would be considered excess oil use that would suggest a proper leak or just normal? mixmasterlooney Posted June 2, 2014 Share Posted June 2, 2014 Looking at the first pic the sump gasket does seem more likely from the pattern but the oil isn't excessively wet to suggest a constant leak. An there common as muck for leaking. 1 hour job to rectify and leave the car over night to let the sealent dry off. master_warning Posted June 9, 2014 Author Share Posted June 9, 2014 Hi guys, so took the car to garage on Sunday and they believe it's the sump gasket. I live in Ireland so they're quoting 100 euro labour plus the new part/s. Apparently the leak is very minor and slow so they've changed the oil, cleaned the engine so I can keep an eye on it, but I'm going to get it fixed v soon. Thanks for the advice everyone!
