Meerkatonacid
Hi all. Can you please tell me if a 56 plate 2.0 petrol S Max has a timing chain or belt. If chain does it just need checking and if belt what is the recommended time to change? Thanks
137699
Not sure about the 2.0 but the 2.5 petrol is belt driven and though Ford recommend a 125,000 interval, plenty of them have snapped much earlier than that so the specialists advise changing at around 75,000 miles. It's worth checking the smax owners club forum as they have all the recommended service items listed on there.

Exdecuk
Think it depends which 1.8 variant you have as some were belts & some were chains. Check out ETIS and hopefully you will get more info there
cyrilthemilkman
I'm after a bit of help on this as well. I have the 2.0L petrol variant, looking under the hood and to the left of the engine block it appears I have a belt, yet all the garages I've rung have checked their systems and it says its a chain and therefore I don't need to replace my belt, looking on parts websites no cam belt kits seem to exist for my vehicle, and reading many a website seems to suggest its a chain as well. Am I looking at a different belt and not the timing belt, or have i got a chinese fake s-max on my hands :D . Reason for asking is i have an annoying squeak coming from that side of the block and it appears to be coming from this belt, but having issues just trying to get someone to quote for the job is an issue. Any help is greatly appreciated.
iantt
Cams are driven by chain, what your looking at is auxiliary belt that the alternator and air con etc runs round. Belt might be worn sqeaking. Easy way to check is spray a little wd40 on the belt as the engine is running, if squeak goes temporary then its new belt time , but get a garage to look at it for you also to be sure
cyrilthemilkman
Ah superb, makes a lot more sense now. I'll try some WD40 in the morning, and re-assess. Thanks Ian.
