Ford Focus 1.6 Petrol Claimed Fuel Consumption

I read somewhere the other day that my Focus 1.6 should be capable of up to 48mpg. Has anyone out there ever had a fuel consumption anywhere near that ?

I put a lot of effort into being an efficient driver, I use maximum concentration and anticipation to try to minimise braking*, in fact the other day I drove all the way from Scotch Corner on the A1(M) to junc 36 of the M1 without braking at all, though I admit it was a Saturday so there were fewer trucks on the road ! Furthermore I try to stick to 65mph on the cruise control, yet even on a long run nearly all motorway or A roads the best I ever get in mpg is low 40s. From memory my old 1988 vintage 1.3 Ford Escort did better than that, and I used to drive that faster, maybe cruising at an indicated 75.

* I actually think that (unless someone pulls out on you) a good driver using decent anticipation and concentration should never have to use their brake at all on the motorway.

32 is the best I've ever got. But I have put heavier seats and stuff in.

I get around 30-32 mpg in my 1.6 Ti-Vct. I do mostly short stop and start trips to work and back

I've got the same car and I do the same type of short urban driving and get similar results,

I accept short urban driving is poor so I don't even display MPG, just miles left.

A couple of months ago though, I went for a days drive around the Peak District,

Filled the tank up and reset the Trip Computer as close to the motorway as I could,

Drove down M1 from Leeds to Sheffield, part 50mph Zone and 70mph cruising,

I got 42mpg at the end of the motorway, after all the country roads and low gears it was only down to 36mpg.

I think any figures given out are engine tests in a controlled environment,

I real life there is weight, wind resistance and tyre quality to slow us down.

I have a 2009 ford focus zetec 1.6.. When i got it, it sounded fine, then it started to sound a bit tapperty. So i serviced it (new plugs. Oil/oil filter. Air filter) and it was still tapperty? I serviced it again today and no change! The engine splutters now and again aswell and it is idling at 9000 and sounds like a diesel with the bonnet open! Is this common? And how do i fix it any ideas?

If it is 900 not 9000 then you have the same issue as me. But engine runs fine, pulls nicely. I just got over it to tell you truth. Garages say nothing wrong might just be the exhurst I put on.

Yeah runs fine just sounds awful when idle. Going through a lot of fuel also and was thinking this may be why. Im going to try new HT leads but doubt that will change much.

The only thing I've tried is engine restore. That stuff did make some diffrence but even they said it might be because I'm missing the sound deadening under the bonnet. Even the focus st engines are loud. Might be a tappet issue.

my 59 plate 1.6 petrol at the minute does 38.3 mpg thats with a few longer journeys than usual.

usually with short town trips and work (8miles each way) i get 36ish mabye more.

long motorway i can get early 40's.

I keep the oil changed every year and service it etc .

I used to have a 57 1.6 petrol and could only get 45-47 mpg doing 50-55 mph. Usually stuck behind a slow driver or a truck

Once when I was going down a long stretch of 50mph limited motorway I reset the mpg meter just as I started and by the end it was on 49.9. I was soo frustrated because I wanted to see 50 ! That said I always work out the av mpg brim to brim when I refill it (my Dad used to do it and I find it quite interesting anyway) and I sometimes only reset the av mpg meter at refill. I find my av mpg reading is about 5 to 10% too optimistic. Interestingly my wife`s Yaris mpg meter also over reads by about 5 to 10%, though that does better than the Focus on MPG. Mixed motoring and round town (not too much standing traffic) it does high 30s and on a run about 50mpg.

I`ve just checked up on what my old D reg 1987 1.4 CVH Escort did for fuel economy. Round town, all stop start driving and collections (it was used for my business) it was mid/high 20s and on a run high 30s, though the indicated cruising speed would have been about 75mph instead of the 65mph I do most of the time now. So in actual fact my old 1987 Escort (which had done about 100,000miles) without fuel injection or variable valve timing wasn`t that much worse than my 2006 Ford Focus with all its advanced technology.I haven`t got the figures because it was a company car but I think the Escort I had before that (a 1.3 OHV) did even better mpg.

My previous car, a 1997 1.8TD Escort, did mid 30s mpg on mixed motoring/round town and mid/high 40s on a run, though my local garage said that particular model of diesel Escort had poor fuel economy generally, is that true ?

I don't have a 1.6 but have a mk3 Focus which should do in the high 50's mpg, mine about 35. Fords test track must be about 100 miles long all downhill. Modern cars are fitted with so much monitoring for fuel efficiency and performance but at the end of the day it don't work. Previous cars have been mainly Fords, Escorts, Mk1 Focuses a Vauxhall Astra, all had the same if not better mpg than my present car.

Is the Focus heavier than the previous Escort ? It certainly seems more sturdy, e.g. the doors seems heavier when you shut them, and as for the split rear seat that seems to weigh about half a ton. It`s certainly got less glass area than my old Escort estate, which, incidentally, makes it harder to park.....

I don't know the statistics on weight but the Mk3 ecoboost engine they say can fit on a sheet of A4 paper so this greatly reduces the weight overall. Your right about about the doors when they shut appearing to be heavier but maybe this is a better technology and design of the bodywork.

Ive just bought a mk 3 ecoboost and the engine is tiny...around town getting about 38mpg havent taken it on a long run yet but im sure it will be alot better

  • 3 months later...

Just came back from a 310 mile trip down to Reading, nearly all on motorways or D/C roads. Wherever possible drove at 65 on the cruise control, got my best ever MPG : 43.6. That was "brim to brim", the MPG meter reported 45.4, which if my maths is correct is about 4% high.

43.6 is good going, my mk2.5 1.6 estate seems to average 40mpg, thats taking it easy on my commute to work on mainly A & B roads.

Used to get 34mpg around town in a bog standard 1.6 Hatchback. Did a trip from Cornwall - Hampshire with a full tank and got a respectable 44mpg. Never had more than that.

Best I've had so far over a week is 42mpg:

best-mpg_zpsa38e8ca7.jpg

I fill up every Sunday to second click and zero the trip. Normal weekly mileage is about 200 with an average mpg of 36. I get better mpg if there's a long journey or two included.

"Best I`ve had so far over a week is 42mpg"

Is that worked out "brim to brim" or what the mpg readout says ? Generally I find the latter over reads by 5%, sometimes more.
