I read somewhere the other day that my Focus 1.6 should be capable of up to 48mpg. Has anyone out there ever had a fuel consumption anywhere near that ?

I put a lot of effort into being an efficient driver, I use maximum concentration and anticipation to try to minimise braking*, in fact the other day I drove all the way from Scotch Corner on the A1(M) to junc 36 of the M1 without braking at all, though I admit it was a Saturday so there were fewer trucks on the road ! Furthermore I try to stick to 65mph on the cruise control, yet even on a long run nearly all motorway or A roads the best I ever get in mpg is low 40s. From memory my old 1988 vintage 1.3 Ford Escort did better than that, and I used to drive that faster, maybe cruising at an indicated 75.

* I actually think that (unless someone pulls out on you) a good driver using decent anticipation and concentration should never have to use their brake at all on the motorway.

I've got the same car and I do the same type of short urban driving and get similar results,

I accept short urban driving is poor so I don't even display MPG, just miles left.

A couple of months ago though, I went for a days drive around the Peak District,

Filled the tank up and reset the Trip Computer as close to the motorway as I could,

Drove down M1 from Leeds to Sheffield, part 50mph Zone and 70mph cruising,

I got 42mpg at the end of the motorway, after all the country roads and low gears it was only down to 36mpg.

I think any figures given out are engine tests in a controlled environment,

I real life there is weight, wind resistance and tyre quality to slow us down.

I have a 2009 ford focus zetec 1.6.. When i got it, it sounded fine, then it started to sound a bit tapperty. So i serviced it (new plugs. Oil/oil filter. Air filter) and it was still tapperty? I serviced it again today and no change! The engine splutters now and again aswell and it is idling at 9000 and sounds like a diesel with the bonnet open! Is this common? And how do i fix it any ideas?

If it is 900 not 9000 then you have the same issue as me. But engine runs fine, pulls nicely. I just got over it to tell you truth. Garages say nothing wrong might just be the exhurst I put on.

Yeah runs fine just sounds awful when idle. Going through a lot of fuel also and was thinking this may be why. Im going to try new HT leads but doubt that will change much.

The only thing I've tried is engine restore. That stuff did make some diffrence but even they said it might be because I'm missing the sound deadening under the bonnet. Even the focus st engines are loud. Might be a tappet issue.

my 59 plate 1.6 petrol at the minute does 38.3 mpg thats with a few longer journeys than usual.

usually with short town trips and work (8miles each way) i get 36ish mabye more.

long motorway i can get early 40's.

I keep the oil changed every year and service it etc .

I used to have a 57 1.6 petrol and could only get 45-47 mpg doing 50-55 mph. Usually stuck behind a slow driver or a truck
