Painting St Engine Cover

Hi guys I remember seeing a photo of a mk7.5 ST on here somewhere where the guy had painted the engine cover to match the body colour.

Anyone have any suggestions for best way to do this? I'm guessing it will need plastic primer and heat resistant paint but can I buy that in the same colour as my car, sprit blue?

Lenny did it on his focus.

You need to treat it the same as anything else. Sand it down with a fairly gritty sandpaper across the entire surface, spray vigerously with primer for a couple of layers. You can then sand it down with a fine grit (2000) to smooth it off, then paint over the top.

You can then do the ford logo seperately.

I got quotes around 80 quid for painting it. I'm not brave enough to do it myself lol

Had mine colour coded and clear laquered by body shop to match the car,

I then took the time myself to precicesly mask it out and using a dremil: at its lowest speed possible, i sand down the surface of each letter which also melted the surface to the masking tape creating a tight bond, then spray the letters correct colour,

I then injected a pool of blue around the embossed ford font within the oval,

All worth the effort shame its hidden under the bonnet though lol

Don't forget the hardener. Lasts a lot longer with it. Also make sure you as dust free environment as possible when doing it, results will be much better.

This is what it looks like as stock

I would want to leave the silver section as it is so would mask that off I guess so only need to spray the black bit blue.

colour code blue and perhaps do the front ribbed area in a silver,

Use the curve line as a border for blue to silver so it looks like two parts.

I reckon you should go for this with the bottom gloss black

Thanks for the comments guys. I think that's the photo I saw. The black does look good. My main question is will normal paint be ok or will I have to get special heat resistant stuff? And will I be able to get that in spirit blue?

Thanks Lenny that makes things easier. Just got to pluck up the courage now as pairings not my favourite task. All in the prep is what I read so when the Halfords discount card arrives I might have to go shopping

Engine bay before

Basically loosen the two jubilee clips and remove the breather pipe then refit on new hose

And after

What do you think. I like it much better than the stock plastic black one.

NB The more observant amongst you might notice something missing in the engine bay.

Well done Loz.

I was going to do this myself but bottled it and went to a local body shop who are in the middle of doing it, can't wait to get it back.
