Sounds like a seized Fuel Sender Unit.

Drive the car over rough terrain see if you can shake it loose.

When the car starts, does it move the guage or does it remain at 0%

Thanks for the reply jeebowhite the problem started about 8 months ago and it would be all over the place and now it stays at 0 and always says I have 31 miles left. I have driven over a lot of rough terane over the last months and dont think it will fix it self , do you know how much it costs to get the fuel sender unit fixed?

to be honest your looking at a replacement.

In most circumstances, your biggest nightmare is going to be the draining and dropping of the fuel tank to get access. you oculd be looking at about 2.5 hours of labour as well as the part (say around £70 at a guess?).

It really depends though if you want to go to Ford or not will define the cost. Alternatively, the issue could be a wiring fault, say a broken wire between the FSU and the instrument cluster.

Have you tried the gauge sweep test to rule out a problem with the instrument cluster? (Hold down trip mileage button while turning key to position II).

I will most likely get it replaced as I just tried the guage sweep test ( wich I didn't know about before so thanks lol) I wasn't sure what to look out for but it made the gauges move but then when I started the car up again still on empty and 31 miles to go....thanks for the help guys

In which case the replacement or at least an inspection of the wiring is due! hopefully it wont be too expensive.

Are there any error codes relating to the FSU, if there is an error it may suggest towards the idea of a bad connection on the unit, otherwise if there is nothing it would probably indicate a bad FSU

It just makes the gauges do their full sweep to test there are no faults with the gauges & warning lights.

If the petrol gauge did its full sweep then the fault will most likely be with the sender unit in the tank as mentioned before.

Get more than one quote though as prices between garages can vary quite a lot.

  • 5 years later...

I had the same problem but after topping up the tank it went away but what I am experiencing is after the engine gets warm  on my 2006 focus st the car starts to jerk while driving and the turbo gauge starts to move up and down on its own without acceleration this I been having this problem for some time a mechanic told me I need a bigger dump valve but I don’t believe that’s the problem if anybody has experienced this problem and has solved it can you please tell me how you got it fixed also the car feels like it wants to cut of and some times it cuts off just after the turbo gauge goes up and comes down my gauge use to work but doesn’t anymore for some reason
